1 Creating a Simple and Open FTTdp Network The Internet has never been more preoccupied with the pursuit of experience. The big video service has promoted user experience to a new level, and the 1 Gbps bandwidth era is coming. At the same time, operators are increasingly dissatisfied with the existing network architecture, pipelines are not able to perceive services, service innovation is constrained, and pipeline values cannot be raised. In this context, the SDN-based network architecture is emerging. In response to this trend, the traditional access network is developing as follows: 1. The network tends to be flattened. The traditional FTTH and FTTC nodes based on copper cables will gradually sink and ultimately become Hybrid FTTH & FTTdp nodes, providing GE-level bandwidth. 2. The network will be more open. The "bitstream"-based wholesale model greatly limits the autonomy of retailers and content providers, and pipelines cannot reflect their values. The SDN-based architecture can deconstruct network functions into components, orchestrate and package them for virtual operators, and provide open API interfaces. In this way, virtual operators can obtain unprecedented management and control capabilities and stimulate innovation. 3. Traffic control can be more elaborate and services can be better perceived. s will become the core nodes for traffic control in the access domain. ZTE's View on the FTTx Network: Simple, Open, and SDN-Ready Hybrid FTTH & FTTdp The ultimate goal of the access network is to become an all-fiber network. However, because of the high cost of transformation at the home entry stage and FTTH difficulties, the development trend of the FTTx network at the current stage is to gradually evolve into a Hybrid FTTH & FTTdp network. The FTTdp@ access method will be an important supplement to FTTH. Although copper cables are retained, FTTdp is required to be as simple, transparent, and manageable as FTTH and easy to evolve into the SDN architecture. There are the following points of view: 1. DP nodes are simplified. Single-port DPU and multi-port DPUs can provide UNI-oriented simple channels to achieve the same permeability supported by FTTH. 2. s will become the only control nodes in the access domain. s provide the same style of management and control modes for and DPUs. For multi-port DPUs, s can manage every UNI. Page 1
2 3. s will become the boundary of SDN deployment. Because DPUs are simplified into UNI-based physical channels, they do not need to be controlled by the SDN, and s will automatically become the boundary of SDN deployment, simplifying SDN deployment and reducing costs and complexity. s will become the core nodes for the network opening and traffic control in the access domain. Challenge That the Existing Hybrid FTTH & FTTdp Architecture Faces: Unable to Provide a Unified Management and Service Distribution Model The expectation of Hybrid FTTH & FTTdp is to normalize the management, O&M, and service distribution models into the existing FTTH model to simplify operation, reduce costs, and improve service delivery efficiency. However, the existing FTTdp architecture makes management, O&M, and service distribution complex, preventing FTTdp and FTTH from being unified, specifically in the following areas: 1. The management models of FTTdp and FTTH cannot be unified. FTTH uses the -based management model. However, FTTdp, especially for the complex multi-port DPUs, uses the TR167-based two-level management model, that is, s manage the ONTs of DPUs through OMCI, and dedicated s manage the transfer and ports of DPUs through the Netconf protocol. The service distribution procedure for FTTdp users is complex and requires s to collaborate with s. Single-port DPUs can be easily incorporated into the management model. FTTH and single-port DPUs use the -EMS management platform, and multi-port DPUs require the dedicated -A management platform. 3. The management of a large number of DPUs requires managing a large number of IP addresses. Because the -A management platform is centralized, the workload is huge. Page 2
3 ZTE's Virtual DPU Technology Achieves the Same Management and Service Distribution Models as FTTH The key challenge to implement the normalization of Hybrid FTTH & FTTdp is to simplify complex multi-port DPUs. ZTE's virtual DPU technology virtualizes a multi-port DPU into multiple single-port DPUs and removes complex packet forwarding, traffic classification, flow control, QoS, and VLAN tagging functions from the DPU, simplifying the DPU into multiple UNI-based physical channels. If ports are ignored, the form and functions of a virtualized multi-port DPU are equivalent to those of multiple devices. The ONT MAC of a DPU is virtualized into multiple ONT instances (V-ONTs), and each ONT instance fully satisfies the related PON standards. An electrical splitter is simulated at the same time, and its functions are exactly the same as those of a light splitter. 2. Complex packet forwarding, traffic classification, traffic control, and queue scheduling functions are removed from the DPU. Multiple channels are created to simply connect each V-ONT to the ports of the DPU, and these channels do not process packets. 3. After the above two steps, the multi-port DPU is virtualized into multiple single-port DPUs (s). Each ID can be defined as DPU ID+port ID. 4. Because the complex packet forwarding function is removed from the device, the management functions of the are greatly simplified. The manages only the ports. 5. Because complex packet forwarding and other functions as well as the corresponding hardware (for example, the switching chip) are removed from the Page 3
4 PDU, DPU power consumption is reduced and a good support is provided for reverse power supply scenarios. The virtual DPU technology simplifies multi-port DPUs. A multi-port DPU is logically equivalent to multiple single-port DPUs and has the same OAM and service forwarding mode as a single-port DPU. The management agent of the existing multi-port DPU is also separated into multiple management agents for single-port s. From the management point of view, there is no different between the management agent s of a multi-port DPU and those of a physical single-port DPU. If a dedicated -A management module is built in the -EMS platform, that is, the is built in the and the Aggregator (A) is built in the EMS of the, the can achieve the full management and control of DPUs. In this way, the normalization of FTTdp and FTTH can be achieved at the management, O&M, and service distribution levels. If the specific media and technology () of UNIs are ignored, the form and functions of s are equivalent to FTTH devices. Therefore, for upper-level applications and management, FTTdp will be used as a simple and transparent channel as FTTH. The simplification of DPUs allows s to be the core nodes of Hybrid FTTH & FTTdp. s achieve the full management and control of s and s. s can easily implement elaborate traffic control for all the pipelines in the access domain, and pipelines are able to perceive services. 5 Because DPUs are simplified and channelized and they do not need to be controlled by the SDN controller through Openflow, s will become the boundary of SDN deployment, simplifying SDN deployment greatly and reducing deployment costs. This has made preparations for the future SDN-based pipelines. Multi-port DPUs are separated into a number of independent channels. In the future open and shared network based on the SDN architecture, these channels will be used as pipeline resources and sliced and orchestrated in different VAN domains for virtual operators to rent. Virtual operators do not need to be concerned about whether these access channels are established based on FTTH or physical multi-port DPUs.
