2 1. What is a Cassia Router? Cassia Router is a long-range enterprise Bluetooth router that can be used in indoor and outdoor environments. It extends the range of Bluetooth connectivity up to 1000 feet (305- Meters) and enables remote control of up to 40 Bluetooth low energy devices without requiring any changes to the Bluetooth end devices. Cassia Bluetooth router acts as a protocol gateway, which translates between the Bluetooth protocol and the Internet Protocol (IP) protocol. This enables your Bluetooth low energy devices to be accessible, and controllable, remotely via an Internet application Cassia X1000 The Cassia X1000 enterprise Bluetooth router has an IP65-rated enclosure, which is fully weather proof, and may be deployed in both indoor and outdoor environments. The X1000 may be attached to a pole or wall (a mounting kit is included) or placed on surface like a desk or counter space. It receives power from Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) via the uplink Ethernet port. It also supports Ethernet, 2.4 GHz WIFI or 3G/4G cellular dongle as IP backhaul. The X1000 is capable of extending Bluetooth s range up to 1000 feet (305 Meter). The X1000 increases the number of devices that can be simultaneously paired and connected to 22 Bluetooth low energy devices or listens to potentially hundreds of devices at the same time when operating in broadcast mode. The Cassia E1000 can be attached to the ceiling or wall (a mounting kit is included) or may be placed on a desktop or counter space. 4 The E1000 increases the number of devices that can be paired and controlled to up to 40 Bluetooth low energy devices. In broadcast mode the E1000 can listen to several hundred Bluetooth low energy end devices. Its patented smart antenna is optimized for horizontal use. It supports Ethernet, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wi-Fi, or 3G/4G cellular dongle as an IP backhaul. This enables your Bluetooth low energy devices to be accessible, and controllable, remotely via an Internet application. 9 3. Deployment 3.1. X1000 Cassia Bluetooth router coverage varies based on conditions. In outdoor open air locations with no obstructions, the coverage radius of Cassia Bluetooth routers is greater than that of indoor locations with walls and obstructions. In general, the radius of outdoor coverage may vary from meters, depending on the wireless interference, obstructions, and line of sight. A rule of thumb for deployment is to ensure that the Bluetooth device can be connected consistently and the Bluetooth signal strength is strong. 12 Down-tilt Angle When installation height is more than 10 meters, an antenna down-tilt angle is required. According to the formula, the following tilt angles are highly recommended: At a height of 5-10 meters, no tilting is needed At a height of meters, 5-10 tilt is required to cover distance further than 10m At a height of more than 20 meters, please calculate the inclination angle according to the formula provided above 3.3. E1000 Optimally, the Cassia E1000 should be placed above ground at a height of 10 to 15 feet (3-5 meters), in line of sight within a range of 60 to 200 meters from the BLE device. Ceiling installations should be 2 meters away from nearby walls or columns. Obstacles, like walls, as well as WIFI interference, will reduce the range of Cassia Bluetooth routers. 13 The installation location should be away from air conditioners, heating pipes, water supply pipes, transformer boxes, an elevator operation room, etc. Install away from microwaves, wireless keyboard/mouse, and other devices that also use the 2.4 GHz band. 14 If you place the E1000 as demonstrated in the picture above, the radiation pattern graphs noted below are the result. 4. Getting Started 4.1. Understanding the Cassia Access Controller (AC) The Cassia IoT Access Controller (AC) is a powerful IoT network management solution. Using the Cassia AC, organizations have access, control, and monitoring over IoT environments. The Cassia AC solution enables the deployment and management of hundreds of Bluetooth routers, as well as the monitoring of thousands of detected/connected devices in an enterprise environment from one centralized interface. Provisioning and managing Bluetooth routers individually is time-consuming and error-prone Version management for hundreds of routers individually is a manual, inefficient process Routers alone cannot support BLE device roaming Routers alone cannot track a BLE device s location For a complete datasheet of Cassia Access Controller, please visit Users may use a Cassia-hosted AC or install their own AC server. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that new users use a Cassia-hosted AC to speed up the trial process. The trial process of a Cassia Bluetooth Router with a Cassia-hosted AC is available for purchase with Cassia Starter Kits. Please contact Cassia support or resellers for more information Prerequisites After acquiring a Cassia Bluetooth router and the Access Controller you will need the following: a) Developer account credentials Developer Key and Developer Secret credentials are required. These developer credentials authorize the remote control of your Cassia Bluetooth router. Here is a sample credential: client_id:tester, secret:198c776539c Cassia Networks Copyright 2018

16 b) Server license key To use the Cassia Bluetooth Router with the AC, you will also need a server license key. The license key governs the number of Bluetooth routers that can be managed by the v p52y-zunk-rqbe-pqlw AC, as well as the length of time, and the types of features available. Here is an example of a server license key: See below screenshot for inputting the Developer Key, Developer Secret, and a server license key via the AC (Figure 6). Figure 6: Input your developer key, developer secret, and license key via the AC c) Open UDP ports 5246 and 5247 The ports that Cassia routers use to communicate with the Cassia Access Controller are UDP 5246 and If you have a Firewall that blocks those ports, please make sure to open them. d) Understand the MAC address You will find your Cassia Bluetooth router s MAC address at the bottom of the router, as noted below in Figure Cassia Networks Copyright 2018

17 Figure 7: Cassia Bluetooth router s MAC address If you are filtering MAC addresses in your security policy, please make sure to input the active MAC addresses. For example, if you are using WIFI for uplink connection, your active MAC will be Label_ MAC+1. See below table for the details. Its SSID is cassia-xxxxxx (the x s correspond to the last 6 digits of the router s MAC address). For example, if the Cassia Bluetooth router MAC address is CC:1B:E0:E0:96:DC, the SSID will be Cassia-E096DC. For detailed instructions follow this Quick Start Guide online at Note: If you can t find the WIFI hotspot, and you are sure that your firmware is 1.2 or above, please press and hold the reset button at the Cassia router bottom for 10 to 15 seconds (Figure 7). 17 Cassia Networks Copyright 2018

18 Figure 8: Cassia Router Reset Button If you are running a Firmware version lower than 1.2, then your setup requires a few additional steps. For detailed instructions please follow this document link at Quick-Start-Guide.pdf Note: The recommended web browser is Google Chrome. Forgot Username & Password If a user forgets his username and password, then he needs to reset the Cassia Bluetooth router. Caution: During a reset the previous configuration is lost. Users need to configure a Cassia router again after every reset. Once reset, the username and password will be restored to admin/admin. 5. Cassia Bluetooth Router Configurations Let s walk through the router configuration in details here. Open your Cassia Bluetooth router configuration page by entering its private IP address. 19 5.1. Overview Tab The Overview tab displays the router s current status, there is no configuration on this page. Figure 10: Cassia Bluetooth router configuration page Overview Parameter MAC Model IP Version Uptime Online Time AC IP Address BLE Chip Status Reboot Reset Export Logs Description This is the MAC address printed on the bottom of the Cassia Bluetooth router, which is equal to the router s ethernet interface MAC. The model number of the router, namely X1000, C1000, E1000, etc. The private IP address that the Cassia Bluetooth router obtained from its local network. The active firmware version on the router The system up time in hours since last reboot, in hours The length of time that the router connected with the AC, in hh:mm:ss. If not connected, it shows offline. Display the IP address of the Access Controller (AC) E1000/C1000/X1000 has two chips, S2000 has one. Status can be idle, passive scan, or active scan. Click this button, the router will perform a soft reboot Click this button, the router will reset its configuration to a manufacturing default Click this button to download the router logs for troubleshooting. 20 5.2. Common tab This page you can configure the most common settings for your router, such as AC Address, timezone and BLE working mode. The first time you log-in the system will force a change away from the default password. New Password You can change the password. A strong password is recommended. Please note down your new password. AC Address Enter the domain name or IP address of the Access Controller that manages this router AC-AP Comm. Ports The communication UDP ports used by your AC and router. This setting must be identical to the one set on your AC. 21 Local RESTful API Remote Assistance Timezone BLE Working Mode To enable the function of invoking Restful APIs directly from the router, rather than from the AC. Note, in this mode, your application server need to be in the same local network as your router. Turning this on will enable Cassia engineers to remotely access your Cassia Bluetooth router for troubleshooting purposes. By default, this function is off. Timezone of your router You can use Cassia s preset parameters for Connection-and- Scanning or scanning-only. Or, you can set up your own values Networks tab In Networks tab you can setup your networking configurations. The Cassia Bluetooth Router supports the following networking uplinks: wired, wireless and 3G/4G dongle. Figure 12: Cassia Bluetooth router configuration page -- Networks Connection Priority When two or more network connections are activated, you can set priority level for the networks (Figure 13). By default, the priority is: Wired > Wireless > 3G/4G. 21 Cassia Networks Copyright 2018

22 For example, if you set priority to Wireless, the new order will be: Wireless > Wired > 3G/4G Figure 13: Cassia Bluetooth router configuration page Connection Priority Wired Settings For a wired connection, you can set it to use static IP, or DHCP. See Figure 14. Figure 14: Cassia Bluetooth router configuration page Wired Connection In a Static IP allocation, enter your network information, including: SSID, password, IP Allocation, IP, Netmask, gateway, and DNS. Note: For your network information, contact your IT/network administrator Wireless Settings The Cassia Bluetooth router s WIFI can work on either Client mode or Access Point mode, but not at the same time. For the initial deployment, we recommend using the Access Point mode. The Cassia Bluetooth router will advertise an SSID: cassiaxxxxxx ( the x s correspond to the last 6 digits of the Cassia Bluetooth router s MAC address). 23 To use the WIFI as your uplink, please switch the Mode to Client Mode, see Figure 15. You can use either DHCP or static to obtain your IP address. For details on your wireless related settings, please contact your IT administrator. Figure 15: Cassia Bluetooth router configuration page Wireless Connection G/4G Dongle Start from v1.3, Cassia officially supports 3G/4G USB dongle as a network uplink. You will have to purchase a supported 3G/4G dongle from Cassia or Cassia resellers, SIM card with active data plan that works with this cellular dongle. Before using any dongle please connect it with your laptop/desktop to ensure the Internet can be accessed with the dongle. After testing the connection to the Internet, then connect the 3G/4G dongle to the USB port on the Cassia Bluetooth router. 25 You can pick APN provider that works with those Dongles. We have tested Soracom, Aeris Sim cards on Huawei MS2131 i-8 USB dongle. Go to your router configuration page, select the dongle you are going to use, most of the fields will be auto-filled, just fill in APN, and/or Username and Password which are provided by your APN provider. See Figure 17 for an example. Note: For detailed sim-related information, contact your data provider. 26 5.4. Bypass tab Cassia router has the capability to send scanned data directly from the router to a thirdparty server, while keeping the control path to the AC. We call this function bypass. MQTT (MQ Telemetry Transport) is described on the mqtt.org site as a machine-tomachine (M2M) / IoT connectivity protocol. It is a publish/subscribe messaging transport protocol, designed for constrained devices and low-bandwidth, high-latency or unreliable networks. Since release v1.2, we have supported MQTT protocol on the bypass traffic, that means, your Cassia router can publish advertisement messages it receives from the BLE sensors to an MQTT server/broker. Other clients, such as web applications on your laptop and mobile device, can subscribe to the topics from the MQTT-Broker. See Figure 18 below for Cassia MQTT Bypass Architecture. 27 Figure 19: Cassia Bluetooth router configuration page Bypass Parameter Scan mode Filtering Bypass Protocol Description passive or active The difference between active and passive scan is that active scan requests a SCAN_RESPONSE packet from the advertiser. A passive scan generally takes more time, since the router must listen and wait for an advertisement versus actively probing to find an advertiser. However, with passive scan, devices consume less battery power. Users can configure filtering by device name, MAC or UUID. Note: The keywords that used for filtering need to be in the advertisement packets. Select MQTT for bypass. 28 The Cassia AC can be deployed flexibly on an on-premise server, in a private cloud, or in Cassia s public cloud. Administrators can access the Cassia AC from a web-browser, through a PC or a tablet, without any special training. 30 Interfaces Please see Figure 22 for the interfaces that Cassia AC works with other products. The communication between Cassia routers and the AC is over CAPWAP which is a UDP based protocol. The default ports are 5246 and The interfaces between the AC and the application server is using Restful APIs, on http or https. For details on Cassia Restful APIs please see next section. Figure 22: Interfaces that Cassia AC works with other products 7 Cassia Restful APIs The Cassia Restful APIs were developed to enable third party developers and device manufacturers to utilize Cassia routers Bluetooth routing and extended range capabilities while using their Cloud services to connect and control multiple BLE devices per Router simultaneously. Furthermore, the Cassia Restful APIs are designed to integrate directly into your application/server using an HTTP/HTTPS based communication protocol, which provides programming language flexibility. Cassia supports C#, Node.js, and Java, but you can choose other languages as you prefer. The Cassia Restful APIs are built into the Cassia IoT Access Controller (AC) and Bluetooth routers, providing the following functions: a. Connect and control your BLE devices. b. Support three modes: Scanning, Connecting, Broadcasting. c. Write/read data to/from the BLE device via the Cloud server. d. Read data as notification/indication events from the BLE device via the Cloud server. 30 Cassia Networks Copyright 2018

Room-based Location Tracking The Cassia AC, together with multiple Cassia Bluetooth routers, can triangulate the position of the Bluetooth LE devices within its coverage, providing location tracking of people and assets in real-time. Please refer to the above, Cassia Restful APIs Implementation Guide, Section 5, for Positioning APIs Secure Pairing With Cassia s 1.2v firmware release, Cassia supports Bluetooth 4.1 Secure Simple Pairing on Cassia Bluetooth routers, namely: Just Works, Passkey Entry, and Legacy OOB. Please refer to the above, Cassia Restful APIs Implementation Guide, Section 5, for Secure Pairing APIs. 8 Cassia Demo Cassia demos showcase Cassia Bluetooth routers and AC in use with off-the-shelf BLE devices. 33 8.2 Cassia TI Sensor Demo To test using a local connection: a) Select Local Connection on Control and enter the private IP address of your Cassia Bluetooth router. (see Figure 24 below) b) Power on your TI sensor tag. When you see a flashing green light, it is working. c) Click Connect button on the demo page. The TI sensor tag should stop flashing now. d) Wait for a few seconds, you will see the data coming in (see Figure 25 below). 34 b) Enter the AC address, developer key, developer secret and router MAC. (see Figure 26 below) c) Click the red DisconnectAll button if you have previously connected the sensor using local mode. You should see the TI sensor tag flashing in green light. d) Click green Connect button on the demo page. The TI sensor tag light should stop flashing now. e) Wait for a few seconds, you will see the data coming in. Figure 26: TI Sensor Demo Page Remote Connection On your AC, you will see the sensor tag is connected (Figure 27).
