23 Working with Optical Couplers and Splitters Tektronix protocol testers offer two types of monitoring: passive monitoring using each type of measuring boards (Rx/Rx and Rx/Tx) active monitoring using measuring boards with receivers and transmitters only (Rx/Tx only) Configuration for Active Monitoring Configuration for Passive Monitoring If your Device under Test (IUT) does not have monitoring points, you must connect the protocol tester via couplers to the transmission line. Optical couplers are required for passive monitoring. are not required for active monitoring. have one input and two outputs. split an optical input signal into two optical output signals. divide the power of the input signal either into equal shares (symmetrical couplers) or into unequal shares (asymmetrical couplers). Tektronix offers four types of optical couplers: Single mode, symmetrical coupler 50/50: 7KK200-5KS / K5CA020 Single mode, asymmetrical coupler 90/0: 7KK200-5KT / K5CA02 Multimode, symmetrical coupler 50/50: 7KK200-5KV / K5CA022 Multimode, asymmetrical coupler 90/0: 7KK200-5KU/ K5CA023 22

24 Select the required coupler dependent on your measurement scenario: Chose single mode couplers for single mode DUTs. Chose multimode couplers for multimode DUTs. To select the coupler with the correct split ratio you need to consider the following technical data of your measurement environment: o Optical input power at the DUTs and at the protocol tester o Minimal optical sensitivity of the DUTs and of the protocol tester o Line attenuation between DUTs and protocol tester Make sure that the power at DUTs and protocol tester is always within the specified operating range of these measurement components. The correct split ratio must ensure that the optical input power at the network components is greater than the minimal optical sensitivity of those components. Recommendations Note: Find below some general advice. Please keep in mind that it may not deliver the best results in any configuration. Use symmetrical couplers for measurement scenarios with small distances between DUTs and protocol tester. Use asymmetrical couplers for measurement scenarios with medium and large distances between DUTs and protocol tester. 23
