2 AWS RE:INVENT SURVEY REPORT What is the hybrid enterprise? Simply put its an organization that is transitioning to a mix of on-premises and cloud-based applications running across hybrid networks including private MPLS and the public Internet. Introduction In 1963 Sweden switched from left-hand driving to right. That they did this overnight (literally) seems unbelievably hard, until you imagine phasing something like that in over a month or two. New signs, new buses, new street marking, new traffic signals the list goes on and on. In many ways, IT has faced a similar set of challenges for the past 30 years. Think of the dramatic, game-changing shifts they have had to adapt to. Personal computers, the Internet, virtual computing, the cloud, mobility their list also goes on and on. The latest addition? The Hybrid Enterprise. What is the hybrid enterprise? Simply put its an organization that is transitioning to a mix of on-premises and cloud-based applications running across hybrid networks including private MPLS and the public Internet. To find out just how prevalent the Hybrid Enterprise is, Riverbed recently polled attendees at Amazon s AWS re:invent conference in Las Vegas. Methodology To gauge opinions about the Hybrid Enterprise Riverbed surveyed 230 attendees face-to-face. They came from a wide range of company sizes, clustered around smaller companies of 250 or so employees as well as a sizeable showing of enterprises with more than 10,000 employees. Most of the people we spoke to worked in IT, development or business-related functions. 2

4 Two thirds say they are involved with all three network models. 66% The Hybrid Enterprise is Upon Us Enterprises have a highly complex computing fabric these days. The most popular network model is a VPN running over public networks (91 percent of the people we spoke with are at least discussing that model). Public networks in general were a close second (87 percent) with MPLS networks coming in third with 75 percent. The most interesting statistic, however, is that two thirds (66 percent) say they are involved with all three network models. This profoundly complicates matters for IT (more on that later). But, it is not just how companies route traffic. We found a similar dynamic with how they deploy applications. Ninety-one percent are at least discussing deploying apps to the public cloud (hence their attendance at AWS re:invent). Other models include SaaS (89 percent), on premise virtual (85 percent), on premise private cloud (81) and on premise physical servers (77 percent). Again, the big news is that 59 percent are involved with all five app deployment models. The bottom line: The Hybrid Enterprise (a jumble of disparate networks with a mash-up of app deployment models) is clearly upon us. But why? 5 What is Driving the Move Towards the Hybrid Enterprise? When pressed as to why companies are pursuing the Hybrid Enterprise, the most common reason given was to optimize application performance (mentioned by 79 percent as being a somewhat to extremely important factor in their decision). This was followed by cost reduction (78 percent) and organizational agility (75 percent). Why companies are pursuing the Hybrid Enterprise 79% 78% 75% A second set of reasons revolved around better serving the customer. 66 percent mentioned enabling the company to do business physically closer to the customer while the same percentage mentioned working the way the customer preferred. Finally, about half (48 percent) said they didn t choose to pursue a hybrid enterprise - it is just how their environment evolved. With so many enterprises already becoming hybrid, we also probed how things were going. What are the implementation challenges these companies are facing? The Hybrid Enterprise challenges IT is facing are a rogue s gallery of traditional IT problems. 84 percent cited reliability as a somewhat to extremely significant challenge. About the same number mentioned availability (84 percent) and performance (83 percent). Also mentioned was security (80 percent), IT agility (80 percent) and end-user experience (77 percent). While these challenges are not new, it is clear that a complex, Hybrid Enterprise exacerbates the situation. 7 THE HYBRID ENTERPRISE HAS ARRIVED The Hybrid Enterprise has arrived. This is a highly disruptive trend, as the survey results show. How disruptive? When we asked IT to rank various trends they have faced over the years, the Hybrid Enterprise was in the top three of the most disruptive tech trends. 1. Mobility 2. Internet 3. Hybrid Enterprise MOST DISRUPTIVE TECH TRENDS How can enterprises cope with the disruption? OPTIMIZATION CONTROL VISIBILITY Latency and bandwidth are no longer business constraints with optimization of application traffic - including on-premises, cloud and SaaS. Business-intent policies provide intelligent control over application performance across hybrid public and private networks. Business needs tools to gain visibility across all applications to ensure optimal end-user experience and speed troubleshooting. 7
