Purpose The Blue Medora VMware vrealize Operations (vrops) Management Pack for NetApp E-Series User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for NetApp E-Series, including dashboards, views, reports, metrics, and alerts that allow users to optimize the monitoring of E-Series or EF-Series resources from within vrealize Operations. 2. Introduction to the Management Pack The Management Pack for NetApp E-Series is an embedded adapter for vrealize Operations (vrops) that monitors NetApp E-Series or EF-Series storage arrays remotely. The Management Pack retrieves data regarding NetApp resources by connecting to each supported NetApp storage device. This section includes the following topics: How the Management Pack Collects Data Data the Management Pack Collects 2.1 How the Management Pack Collects Data During each data collection cycle, the Management Pack opens a REST API connection to the configured storage array and queries it to retrieve metrics regarding NetApp resources. The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes. The Management Pack supports Autodiscovery and manual discovery of Figure 1: Example Traversal Spec resources. When you enable Autodiscovery for an adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vrealize Operations and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vrops, the Management Pack creates the resource kind. 2.2 Data the Management Pack Collects The Management Pack can collect performance data, relationships (associations), and events for the following NetApp E-Series resources: 1. Array 2. Controller 3. Drive Host Interface 6. LUN 7. Tray Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature within vrops allows you to easily navigate your environment. 4 3. Dashboards Dashboards are the primary user interface that allow users to monitor NetApp E-Series resources from within vrealize Operations. 5 3.2 E-Series Health Investigation The E-Series Health Investigation dashboard displays the health status of your E-Series resources in the Environment Overview Selector widget and allows you to select them to investigate their related alerts and KPIs. 6 3.3 E-Series Hosted VMs The E-Series Hosted VMs dashboard allows you to select a virtual machine and its related datastores and volumes to view KPIs for each resource. You can also select VMs hosted on E-Series to populate a list of alerts. 11 3.8 E-Series Physical Overview The E-Series Physical Overview dashboard allows you to select a storage array to view its alerts, properties, relationships, KPI scoreboard, and associated controllers, trays, drives, and interfaces. 12 4. Views The vrops Management Pack for NetApp E-Series creates views that allow the user to view statistics of metrics for various NetApp E-Series resources. The views help give a broad picture of the entire system, as opposed to a more in depth view. To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > All Objects > NetApp E-Series and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Details tab, then Views. The available views for that resource are listed and can be selected. 13 5. Reports The vrops Management Pack for NetApp E-Series contains out-of-the-box reports, as listed below. Most reports contain one or more of the views listed in section 4. Views. These reports can be exported and easily shared with key stakeholders in either.pdf or.csv formats. To access the Management Pack reports, go to Environment > All Objects > NetApp E-Series and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates. 14 6. Alerts The Management Pack for NetApp E-Series pulls health status and events from E-Series resources and displays them in vrealize Operations as alerts. Refer to section 10. Appendix II: Alerts, Symptoms, & Recommendations for the full list of alerts, symptoms, and recommendations. Figure 11: Alert Example 7. Analysis Badges Using the predictive analytics capabilities of the vrops Analysis Badges through capacity definitions, the Management Pack for NetApp E-Series populates Space and IOPS Capacity for the array, volume group, and dynamic disk pool resource kinds; IOPS capacity for the volume resource; and IOPS and temperature capacity for the drive resource. 15 8. Troubleshooting the Management Pack Known troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack for NetApp E-Series. This section includes the following topics: Troubleshooting an Adapter Instance Testing Connection Failures Viewing System Log Files 8.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter Instance Perform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance: Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vrops. Refer to section 8.2 Testing Connection Failures. View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vrops. Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section 8.3 Viewing System Log Files, for details. 8.2 Testing Connection Failures When clicking Test Connection in the Manage Solution window when adding an adapter instance, the following connection errors are possible Bad Host/User Name/Password Ensure the following information was entered correctly: NetApp E-Series Host name NetApp E-Series User Name and Password Illegal Host - Unable to establish a valid connection to the target system Ensure the host name entered is valid. Accepted host formats include the host name, written in Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) format, IPv4-compatible. 8.3 Viewing System Log Files You can view adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vrops user interface or in an external log viewer. The adapter log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/adapters/netappeseries_adapter3/ folder. The collector log files are in the $ALIVE_BASE/user/log/ folder. The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG. You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator > Support > Logs > Select COLLECTOR folder > Select Edit Properties icon > Edit Root logger level. NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time. 16 9. Appendix I: Metrics The Management Pack for NetApp E-Series collects the following metrics by NetApp E-Series resource kinds. LUN Properties LUN The unique identification value for this object. Other objects may use this reference value to refer to the mapping definition. LUN Properties SSID integer An internal volume identifier value that is not meaningful outside the firmware environment. LUN Properties Label The label we created to identify this resource. LUN Properties Type The type of the LUN mapping. LUN Relationships Parents resource names of Parent resources. Host Interface Properties Controller Slot integer The slot of the Controller that this Host Interface is associated with. Host Interface Properties Port The identifying number assigned to this channel port. The range for port numbers is 1..n. If the port number cannot be determined, this field is set to zero. Host Interface Properties Logical Interface Type This enumeration defines the different I/O interface types that may be reported as part of the configuration information associated with a controller. Host Interface Properties Label The label we created to identify this resource. Host Interface Properties Maximum Interface Speed The maximum speed of the IO interface. Host Interface Link Status Up Whether or not the link status is up. Host Interface Current Interface Speed Host Interface Simplified Power State The current speed of the IO interface. Drive Combined Combined throughput of this drive. Drive Write Write throughput of this drive. 17 KIND GROUP TYPE DESCRIPTION Drive Cause of Status An indication of the reason for the current status of the drive. This field is most useful when the current status is something other than optimal; it identifies the event that caused the status to change to its current value. This field is valid for missing drives. Drive Spare Blocks Remaining Percent integer The percentage of spare blocks remaining in the solid state drive. Controller firmware checks and updates this percentage approximately once per hour. Drive Offline True if the drive is in the offline state, false otherwise. This field is valid for missing drives. Drive Status An indication of the current status of the drive. This field is valid for missing drives. Drive Observed Time The time in milliseconds when this observation was made. Drive Available True if the drive is available for use in creating a new volume group; false otherwise. This field is valid for missing drives. Drive Erase Count Percent integer The percentage of average erase count. Drive Reference Temp integer Reference temperature (maximum safe operating temperature in degrees Celsius). Drive Current Temp integer The current drive temperature (in degrees Celsius). Drive Simplified Power State Metric generated with purpose of Simplified Power State. Drive Iops Read Physical IOPS Read physical IOPS of this drive. Drive Iops IOPS Utilization The quotient of combined IOPS / maximum IOPS. Drive Iops Write Physical IOPS Write physical IOPS of this drive. Drive Iops Other IOPS Other IOPS of this drive. Drive Iops Combined IOPS Combined IOPS of this drive. Drive Properties Maximum Speed () integer The maximum speed of the drive. Currently not used. Drive Properties Firmware Version The version of firmware on the Drive. Drive Properties Interface Type The interface type of the Drive. Drive Properties Software Version This data is a variable-length ASCII text. If an interposer is present in front of SATA drives, the identifies the version of the interposer package. In this case, the SATA drive firmware version can be found in the physicaldrivetypedata field. If an interposer is not present (always the case for Fibre Channel drives) this field describes the drive firmware version. Drive Properties Slot integer The slot identifier, or ordinal identifier, of the component within its physical tray. Drive Properties Block Size integer The block (i.e. sector) size used by the drive, represented in bytes. This field is valid for missing drives. Drive Properties Manufacturer Date The date of manufacture of the drive, represented in seconds since midnight GMT on January 1, Note that this information is not returned for most Serial ATA (SATA) drives. Drive Properties Drive Media Type This field is set to the drive media type of the drive. Drive Properties Spindle Speed integer The drive reported spindle speed. Solid State Disk (SSD) drives report zero. Drive Properties Label The label created to identify this resource. Drive Properties Serial Number The variable-length ASCII text for the serial number of the drive. Drive Properties Tray Reference The TrayRef reference value of the tray object in which the component resides. Drive Properties Current The reference value of the volume group, disk pool, or flash cache to which this drive is currently assigned. If a hot spare drive is actively sparing for a failed drive, this field will identify the volume group, disk pool, or flash cache that is using the hot spare drive. If the drive is not currently assigned, or is an idle hot spare, the reference value will be null. This field is valid for missing drives. Drive Properties Usable Capacity The usable capacity of the drive, in bytes, after accounting for any space that is reserved for use by the array controller for overhead information. Properties World Wide Name The world wide name of the volume. Properties Thin Provisioned Whether or not the volume is thin provisioned. Properties Provisioned Capacity Quota Properties DSS Max Segment Size integer The maximum capacity of the Expandable Repository (in bytes). The maximum segment size (in bytes) that this volume could assume with the dynamic segment sizing feature. This field is only meaningful if dsspreallocenabled is true. Properties Mirror Active An indication of whether the cache mirroring option is active for the volume's data. Properties Read Ahead Multiplier Properties Protection Information Capable integer A true (non-zero) / false (zero) indicator of whether or not automatic cache readahead is enabled. This field is no longer used. Properties Recon Priority integer The reconstruction priority value for the volume. This value is in the range 0-4, with 0 indicating that reconstruction is favored over any I/O, and 4 indicating that reconstruction should be performed with minimal impact to I/O. Intermediate values indicate various levels of compromise between these two extremes. 22 KIND GROUP Properties Maximum Virtual Capacity TYPE DESCRIPTION The maximum virtual capacity to which this thin volume can grow (in bytes). Properties Expansion Policy The automatic Expandable Repository expansion policy. Properties Segment Size integer The segment size (in bytes) of the volume. The segment size is, for the most part, an indication of the stripe depth used to lay out the volume's block addresses. Properties Growth Alert Threshold integer The percent value at which an alert is generated. Properties Block Size integer The block size (in bytes) of the volume. Properties Extreme Protection An indication of whether the volume is configured for extreme protection. Such configurations generally call for extensive consistency checks and parity validations with each I/O request to the volume. Properties DSS Prealloc Enabled True if dynamic segment sizing preallocation is enabled for the volume. Properties CWOB A true value means that the controller is allowed to use write-back caching of dirty data even when the cache memory's battery-backup protection is not available or not operational. A false value means that any problems with the battery-backup protection of the write cache will cause the controller to suspend all write-back caching operations for the volume. Properties Write Cache Active An indication of whether write-back caching is active for the volume. Properties Name The name of the volume. Properties Capacity The capacity (in bytes) of the volume. Properties Mirror Enable An indication of whether the cache mirroring feature is currently enabled for this volume. It is possible that the mirrorenable and mirroractive values differ; this may occur, for example, if the alternate controller is removed or failed. Properties Read Cache Active An indication of whether read caching is active for the volume. Properties Protection Type The protection type of the volume. Properties Reference The reference ID of the volume's volume group. Properties Full Whether or not the volume is full. Note that this value may not match the readcacheactive setting in cases where problems with the controller cache or its battery back-up have been detected. Properties Write Cache Enable An indication of whether write-back caching is enabled for the volume. Note that this value may not match the writecacheactive setting in cases where problems with the controller cache or its battery back-up have been detected. Properties Cache Flush Modifier The cache flush modifier value, which is used to specify the maximum amount of time that dirty data for this volume may be retained in the controller's write cache prior to being flushed to disk. Observed Time In Ms The time in milliseconds that this observation was made. Read Hit Bytes Number of bytes read from cache Flash Cache Read Hit Bytes Number of bytes read from cache Status The current operational state of the volume.
