6 Application examples Controlling a positioning cylinder in the paper and printing industry The electric signal coming from a controller or a PLC (e) is converted to a pneumatic signal (p) by the e/p converter. The pressure signal is used to position a cylinder which, in turn, moves a roller that keeps the paper under a certain tension. e p Air Type 6 Controlling a valve Valves equipped with small pneumatic actuators can be controlled directly by an e/p converter. The e/p converter receives the electric signal from a controller or a PLC. The e/p converter can also control a pneumatic positioner. Type 324- TROVIS 6493 Field or industrial units can be mounted directly to a valve (attachment to rod-type yoke or according to NAMUR). e Air p Type 66 Pressure control The p/e converter measures the pressure in the pipeline and converts it to an electric signal. The controller uses the electric signal to calculate the control signal which is passed on by the positioner to finally close or open the pneumatic control valve. Type 324- e Type 634 p 6 T 6000 EN
7 Filling of liquids in the beverage industry and breweries The e/p converter converts an electric signal to a pneumatic signal. The pneumatic signal controls cylinders which insert filling tubes more or less deep, depending on the liquid level, into bottles, filling them with beverages or detergents. p e Air Type 626 To the PLC Booster control Boosters are used to amplify the flow rate of compressed air. To control boosters, you can use, apart from handwheels, also e/p converters which receive an electric signal from a controller or a PLC. Type 6 e Air p Applying. adhesive or glue Glue or adhesive is to be applied on different bases. Depending on the speed of the conveyor belt, varying quantities must be applied. The e/p converter receives an electric signal, which changes with the belt speed, and converts it to a pressure signal. The pressure causes the ball of a dispenser to adapt the outlet to the required amount of glue or adhesive. This ensures uniform application. Type 626 Air p e 7 T 6000 EN
8 Temperature control The SAMSON controllers TROVIS 642, 6493 and 6497 allow the realization of simple temperature control systems, e.g. flow temperature control in heating installations. The flow temperature is measured with a Pt 00 sensor and transmitted to the controller. The latter controls a pneumatic control valve by issuing an analog 4 to 20 ma signal via an i/p positioner. TROVIS 6493 TROVIS 6497 TROVIS 642 Mixing of two liquids TROVIS 642 can be used for ratio control when two liquids are mixed. The controller obtains signals from two differential pressure transmitters and root-extracts the signals. The controller then uses the signals to calculate an output signal for the control valve which must reach the required mixing ratio. PD TROVIS 642 F PD F Flow control TROVIS 642 and 6493 provide a convenient flow control. When using the root-extracting function of these controllers, the flow rate can be easily calculated from the differential pressure signal issued by the differential pressure transmitter. The analog output signal of the controller activates the positioner and with it the pneumatic valve. TROVIS 6493 TROVIS 642 PD F 8 T 6000 EN
9 Temperature control with function generation The SAMSON controllers TROVIS 642 and 6493 also allow the realization of a temperature control with function generation, e.g. an outdoor temperature-controlled flow temperature control. The outdoor temperature is measured with an Pt 00 sensor and passed on to the controller which utilizes function generation to directly convert the outdoor temperature to a set point for the flow temperature. The controller activates the electric control valve using a three-step signal. Temperature cascade control The boiler is heated by a heat exchanger. To minimize the delays of the controlled system, cascade control with a master and a slave controller is implemented. TROVIS 642 is particularly suited to solve this task since it is capable of being the master and the slave controller at the same time. It is also possible to use two TROVIS 6497 or two TROVIS 6493 controllers. The master controller measures the actual boiler temperature and forwards its manipulated variable as reference variable WE to the slave controller. The slave controller controls the flow temperature in the heat exchanger loop. The control valve is activated using a three-step signal. M x WE y x TROVIS TROVIS TROVIS 6493 Limiting control TROVIS 642 is also a good choice when performing limiting control with minimum selection, as shown in the example opposite. The color is to be heated to a certain predetermined temperature, however, the shell temperature of the reaction tank must not exceed the temperature of the color by a predetermined value. The reaction tank is heated or cooled down using two heat exchangers. The main controller controls the temperature of the color. The limiting controller controls the temperature difference between the tank shell temperature and the color temperature. The color temperature is applied to the analog output AA, fed back to the controller input as disturbance variable and subtracted from the shell temperature. The minimum selection function feeds the smaller control signal of both control loops to the split-range unit, thus activating both control valves. x y WE TROVIS 642 y AA 9 T 6000 EN
10 Explosion protection Some of the SAMSON e/p Converters are suitable for use in hazardous areas as they are frequently found in the chemical and petrochemical industry. Important factors of the explosion protection relevant for such applications are listed in the following. For details, please refer to the standards indicated. Zone classification Hazardous areas are grouped into zones to indicate the danger of explosion. Each zone prescribes particular measures which ensure explosion protection. Zone Meaning Example 0 2 Dangerous, potentially explosive atmospheres occur permanently or for a long time. Dangerous, potentially explosive atmospheres occur sometimes. Dangerous, potentially explosive atmospheres occur seldom and for a short time (< 2 h). Inside of reaction tanks containing flammable gases. In the proximity of Zone 0, immediate area around stuffing boxes that are not sufficiently sealed. Areas surrounding the Zones 0 and. Type of protection The type of protection describes the measures to be taken to prevent electrical appliances from igniting explosive atmospheres. Type of protection Basic principle Standard, regulation d Flameproof enclosure l Parts which can ignite an explosive atmosphere are placed in an enclosure which can withstand the pressure caused by an explosion inside the housing and prevents the transmission of the explosion to the surrounding explosive atmosphere. A circuit is intrinsically safe when it does not R L produce sparks or thermal effects whose energy suffices to ignite an explosive atmosphere. U C DIN EN VDE 070/07 Part 7 Category ia Devices of this category are suitable for Zones 0, and 2. Zone 0 must be certified separately. Category ib Devices of this category are suitable for Zones and 2. Temperature classes The temperature classes group electrical appliances according to their max. permissible surface temperature. It must be smaller than the ignition temperature of the explosive material. 11 UN 3 Ex Safety barriers according to DIN and EN Section 8 Safety barriers are passive networks which separate intrinsically safe and not intrinsically safe circuits without isolating them electrically. The output circuits of the safety barriers meet the requirements of the intrinsic safety ia and ib. The code consists of two code numbers whose meanings are listed in the Table below.
