4 1.3 Optidrive E2 Model Selection. The model selection is done using the model identifiers on the drive s model code 4

5 1.4 Single Phase VSD Only One On The Market Range 0.37kW ( 0.5HP) to 1.1kW (1.5HP) The Optidrive E2 single phase is the worlds first fully featured Variable Speed Drive for single phase motors. Works with Permanent Split Phase and Shaded Pole induction motors Note: beware some other manufacture say their drives can do single phase, what they mean is single phase input 3 phase output. Special Boost Phase To ensure reliable starting of single phase motors in cold conditions the drive can be set to initially boost the motor voltage up to rated voltage whilst maintaining a fixed starting frequency, before reducing the frequency and voltage to the desired operating point This is set in parameter P32 and P33 5

7 1.6 Drive Protection Systems A real advantage of having a motor controlled by a VSD is the much greater level of protection of the motor from overload, supply failures and voltage fluctuations. This is list of faults or issues that the drive can detect, display and record in the trip log. (Last 4 trips) Over current on drive output. Excess load on the motor. Over temperature on the drive heatsink Drive has tripped on overload after delivering >100% of value in P 08 for a period of time. Brake channel over current Brake resistor overload Internal power stage fault Over voltage on DC bus Under voltage on DC bus Heatsink over temperature Under temperature External trip (on digital Input 2 or 3) Comms loss trip Input phase loss trip Spin start failed Analog input current out of range If the motor has a internal thermistor it can be wired as input signal to the I/O and programmed as external trip. 7

8 1.7 Understanding single to three phase drives A great use for VSD s is the ability to run a three phase motor from a single phase power supply. The ability of the drive to do this is based on the solid state switching of the output voltage. This allows much larger motors to be connected to single phase supply 3 Phase motors are cheaper and much quieter than single phase Allows motors running on single phase to be easily reversed by control devices. Ideal for machinery, pump and fan applications 3 Phase Delta motor connection Drive provides Easy Reversing 8 of motor rotation

9 1.8 Programing Optidrive E2 The E2 is easy to program and set up with just 11 basic parameters to set from the basic menu of 14. 11 2.0 Energy Optimising The Optidrive E2 has a built in energy optimisation function. This is designed to maximise the energy savings achievable whenever the motor and drive are not operating at it maximum load. Motor current is set in P 08 (rated motor current set from Data Pate information) Energy optimising is enabled/ disabled P 06 = 0 Disable 1 Enable The Optidrive E2 energy optimising is designed to provide within the drive a function that automatically optimises the voltage/ frequency relationship to minimise the energy consumption of the motor Note: energy optimising is not available in single to single phase drives. 11

12 2.1 EMC Compliance The Optidrive E2 is supplied with a built in RFI filter to meet EMC requirements. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) All Optidrives have the C TICK for Aus/NZ to show compliance with EMC standards. 12

13 2.2 I/O Options There are many ways to set up the I/O control wiring to achieve the desired motor and process control. The Optidrive E2 User Guide has several examples and details of I/O configurations which are easy to follow. 14 2.3 PID loop control PID is a common requirement used in association with motor controls. A proportional integral derivative controller (PID controller) is a control loop feedback mechanism widely used in industrial process control. A PID controller calculates an error value as the difference between a measured process variable and a desired set point The controller attempts to minimize the error by adjusting the process through use of a manipulated variable. A PI Controller (proportional integral controller) is a special case of the PID controller in which the derivative (D) of the error is not used. Note: PI control can be made to work in many ways and applications technical assistance is available where required Optional Invertek Transducer PID Feedback signals Voltage:0 10V Current: 0 20mA, 4 20mA, Motor Load Current Motor speed is constantly adjusted to maintain the right duct pressure which is required by the Set point pressure. Typical PI circuit wiring 14

15 Updated July Brake Resistors (IP20 models) Optidrive has built in braking (power dump circuit) which when used with an external brake resistor will dissipate the re generated energy from the motor thus decelerating a high inertia load more rapidly. Note: Brake Chopper on IP20 models size 2 and 3 and IP66 models size 2 and 3 Using an external braking resistor can provide faster deceleration. A range of resistors are available and are inserted as shown in Fig 1. The resistor sits hard against the drive heatsink and is locked in with a small screw. A separate technical application sheet provides details on how to determine the resistor size and connect to the drive. P 34 sets to braking options on the drive. Fig 1 15

16 2.5 Spin Start Also known as: Flying Start works to catch a spinning motor Disabled by default, enabled using P 33. Automatically detects motor frequency and rotational direction (fwd or rev) on drive enable. Ramps to set speed at desired acc/dec ramp rate Reduces risk of O I trip on enable and mechanical wear on system Typically used in HVAC and high inertia applications Not available on size 1 Optidrive E2 If there is enough static differential pressure on afan or pump, it will spin even if motor is not energised. It may also spin backwash if air pressure is reversed or a non return valve has failed. Optidrive E2's SPIN START feature can be enabled to check these and manage these difficult situations on start up, reducing electrical and mechanical stress. It will also take advantage of rotation speed already on the fan / pump. The drive will detect the fan or pump is already rotating and attempt to control the motor from its current speed position. 16

17 2.6 Modbus RTU communications Modbus is an old and very common for of SERIAL communication used in control automation. The RTU stands for Remote Terminal Unit The data is transmitted via RS485 (2 wire) signal data cable Connections are common RJ45 s Other communication protocols are supported with optional modules: Profibus DP EtherNet DeviceNet 17
