These surge protective devices (SPDs) are designed for repeated limiting of transient voltage surges as specified in the standard on 50 or 60 Hz power circuits not exceeding 1000 V and designated as follows: Type 1 SPD Permanently connected SPDs intended for installation between the secondary of the service transformer and the line side of the service equipment overcurrent device, as well as the load side, including watt-hour meter socket enclosures and intended to be installed without an external overcurrent protective device. SPDs have been investigated to verify that the average of the transient voltage surges is limited to the Voltage Protection Rating (VPR) marked on the product. The effect of the SPD on connected loads, the effect of the SPD on harmonic distortion of the supply voltage, and the adequacy of the voltage suppression level to protect connected equipment from damage due to transient voltage surges has not been investigated. Types 1 and 2 SPD will be marked with at least one of the following enclosure type markings: When marked Type 1 Enclosure, these SPDs are intended for indoor use only. When marked "Type 4 Enclosure" these products are suitable for outdoor use and provide a degree of protection with respect to splashing water, windblown dust and hose-directed water. When marked "Type 4X Enclosure" these products are suitable for outdoor use and provide a degree of protection with respect to splashing water, windblown dust, hose-directed water, and the formation of ice on the enclosure plus resists corrosion. When marked "Type 12 Enclosure" these SPDs are suitable for inddoor use and provide a degree of protection against dust and dripping noncorrosive liquids

The value of the VPR is determined as the nearest highest value taken from Table 63.1 in UL 1449 to the measured limiting voltage determined during the transient-voltage surge suppression test using the combination wave generator at a setting of 6 kv, 3 ka. MCOV: Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage Rating in volts - for Type 1 and 2 SPDs. NA - Not Applicable. SCCR: Short-Circuit Current Rating in amps or ka.

All dimensions are approx. unless specified as "max" or "min". Internal Wiring - Unless otherwise specified, all internal wiring is minimum No. 18 AWG. Low voltage lamp and signal circuitry may employ No. 22 AWG. Markings - In accordance with Section General and as follows: "Suitable For Use on a Circuit Capable of Delivering Not More Than,000 rms symmetrical Amperes. Installation Instructions - In accordance with Section General. Includes the following: Line Conductor size, #6AWG min., #1/0 Max. Form C contacts rated rated 2.0 A resistive at 30 Vdc, 1.0 A resistive at 1 Vac. The instructions to cover installation of a facility filter shall include prominent mention of all four of the following conditions of installation: a) An insulated grounding conductor that is identical in size and insulation material and thickness to the grounded and ungrounded circuit supply conductors, except that it is green with or without one or more yellow stripes, is to be installed as part of the circuit that supplies the filter. Reference should be made to Table of the National Electrical Code regarding the appropriate size of the grounding conductor. b) The grounding conductor mentioned in item a is to be grounded to earth at the service equipment or other acceptable building earth ground such as the building frame in the case of a high-rise steel-frame structure. c) Any attachment-plug receptacles in the vicinity of the filter are to be of a grounding type, and the grounding conductors serving these receptacles are to be connected to earth ground at the service equipment or other acceptable building earth ground such as the building frame in the case of a high-rise steel-frame structure. d) Pressure terminal or pressure splicing connectors and soldering lugs used in the installation of the filter shall be identified as being suitable for the material of the conductors. Conductors of dissimilar metals shall not be intermixed in a terminal or splicing connector where physical contact occurs between dissimilar conductors unless the device is identified for the purpose and conditions of use.
