1 TDK CFast TM CAG3B series Next-generation CompactFlash for the Future Social Infrastructure Flash memory storage offers features such as high-speed access, outstanding shock resistance, compactness, light weight and low power consumption. Products such as TDK s SSD (Solid State Drive) and CF (Compact Flash) card are widely used in all kinds of industrial devices as substitutes for HDDs. CFast is the next-generation flash memory standard established by the CompactFlash Association. Identical in size to a CF card, CFast is mounted with a SATA interface and realizes twice the transfer speed of conventional types. The CFast TM card mounted with advanced memory controller IC GBDriver RS3 is a new development by TDK. The product lineup features capacities of 1GB to 64GB and offers a wide range of high-speed, highly reliable performance for industrial applications such as operation systems, control programs and user data storage as well as for embedded applications. 01

2 High-speed SATA 3Gbps SMART CFast TM TDK SSD and CF Card widely used in Diverse Industrial Applications The development of the IT society has brought with its accelerated growth of the volume of information produced. Although approximately half of the worldwide data storage is handled by HDDs, the use of flash memory storage such as SSDs and CF cards in place of HDDs in industrial devices or embedded applications is becoming more and more common. HDDs incorporate a spindle motor that rotates a platter at high speed while the magnetic head searches for and reads and writes data. The absence of such mechanical contrivances in flash memory storage enables realization of extremely short access speeds measurable in micro-seconds. Flash memory storage is used in place of HDDs in medical devices, inspection equipment and biometric identification systems, for example, where the emphasis is on the need for high-speed processing. In addition, thanks to the absence of mechanical contrivances, flash memory storage offers outstanding shock resistance, making them ideal for use in automotive and transport systems including machine tools, FA equipment, car navigation systems and drive recorders that are prone to exposure to vibration and shock. A further advantage is the remarkably small size of CF card, making direct mounting on mother boards possible. However, although SSDs already employ the high-speed serial SATA (serial ATA) interfaces, CF cards still use the IDE-transfer type PATA (parallel ATA) interface. Smooth communication between the host device and the CF card requires a higher-speed CF card. While retaining the same compact size of existing CF cards, the new CAG3B Series product is mounted with a SATA interface. This product is a compact next-generation flash drive that offers outstanding performance and usability for industrial and embedded applications. 3 300MB/s high-speed data transfer by SATA-II Interface There are two types of data transfer for electronic device: Parallel transfer and serial transfer. The parallel transfer makes use of multiple signals to transfer multiple data simultaneously, while the serial transfer uses one signal line to transfer data one bit at a time. Although, at the same transfer rate, the parallel transfer can transfer greater volumes of data than the serial transfer, this transfer poses problems such as inter-line interference and difficulty in achieving synchronization, with the result that there are limits on the speed achievable. The serial transfer, on the other hand, is capable of transferring even greater volumes of data than the parallel transfer since it is not restricted by such problems, and, as result, the high-speed serial transfer has replaced the parallel approach. The parallel transfer was firstly adopted as the interface connecting the PC and the hard disk (PATA/IDE). In around 1980, the previous ATA transfer speed of 3.3MB/s was increased to 133MB/s, but since this proved to be the limit, the serial transfer-type SATA was adopted instead. While the first-generation SATA was capable of 1.5Gbps, SATA-II realized 3.0Gbps and SATA3, 6.0Gbps. With the changeover of HDD interface from ATA to SATA, HDDcompatible SSDs were also changed from ATA to SATA. With advances in the CF card leading to the appearance of the newgeneration CFast card, this type, too, came to be mounted with the SATA interface. The memory controller mounted in CFast affects performance. The TDK memory controller IC has evolved hand in hand with increasing interface speed. The GBDriver RS3 incorporated into the CAG3B Series is the latest memory controller IC that is furnished with a SATA-II interface and features a data transfer speed with the host device of 300MB/s, read performance of 200MB/s and write performance of 100MB/s. 4 Wear Leveling TDK Smart Swap for Optimized Write Dispersion The disadvantage of NAND-type flash memories used in devices such as SSDs and CF cards is endurance. For example, when a specific segment becomes damaged due to concentrated write operations, the memory capacity steadily degrades, even if other segments are still in new condition. To avoid this phenomenon, write areas are dispersed and leveled throughout the entire memory. This technique is known as wear leveling. There are two types of wear leveling: The dynamic type and the static type. The dynamic type implements wear leveling within the range of physical memory allocated to write addresses, and disperses dynamic data (new data) only leaving static data that is updated only infrequently such as the OS untouched. On the other hand, the static approach also carries out data transfer for physical memory with no write data, resulting in global wear leveling. During this process, the block write(erase) count is recorded and, as far as possible, data is written in blocks with the lower write(erase) count. In addition, when necessary, data in blocks where no write (erase) operations have been implemented (static data) is transferred to a different block in order to level out write (erase) counts. The GBDriver RS3 mounted in the CAG3B Series offers the advantages of both the dynamic and static types and features write dispersion ( TDK Smart Swap ), providing the significant advantage of being able to set the static wear leveling range as desired. In addition, as well as a robust error correcting function (ECC), the GBDriver RS3 is furnished with a function to pre-empt errors caused by power shutdowns. Moreover, outstanding functions such as the auto-recovery function that automatically restores read disturb errors resulting from repeated data read operations have make this a product that has won wide acclaim worldwide. One of TDK s greatest strengths is its in-house development of the memory controller IC. CAG3B Series wear leveling Wear leveling is not implemented since data is neither changed nor shifted. Wear leveling is implemented within this range. Advantage: Required write (erase) operations are carried out in physical memory Disadvantage: In some cases, the wear leveling range may be inadequate. The range of the static wear leveling area is for the whole memory area, and can be set freely, resulting in optimized write dispersion that features the advantages of both the dynamic and static types. Static wear leveling is implemented in areas where there are major differences in inter-physical memory write counts.
