5 Safety instructions Important Information Notice: Read these instructions carefully, and look at the equipment to become familiar with the device before trying to install, operate, or maintain it. The following special messages may appear throughout this documentation or on the equipment to warn of potential hazards or to call attention to information that clarifies or simplifies a procedure. This is the safety alert symbol. It is used to alert you to potential personal injury hazards. Obey all safety messages that follow this symbol to avoid possible injury or death. The addition of this symbol to a Danger or Warning safety label indicates that an electrical hazard exists, which will result in personal injury if the instructions are not followed. DANGER DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. 6 Certified usage The device may only be employed for the purposes described in the catalog and technical description, and only in conjunction with external devices and components recommended or approved by the manufacturer. The product can only be operated correctly and safely if it is transported, stored, installed and assembled properly and correctly. Furthermore, it must be operated and serviced carefully. Supply voltage Note: The supply voltage is electrically isolated from the housing. WARNING ELECTRIC SHOCK Ground the device before connecting the power supply. Only connect a supply voltage as described in the data plate of your device. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. For every supply voltage to be connected, make sure the following requirements are met: The power supply conforms to overvoltage category I or II. The voltage supply has an easily accessible disconnecting device (e.g. a switch or a plug). The disconnecting device is clearly identified so that in the case of an emergency, it is clear which disconnecting device belongs to which line. The lines to be connected are voltage-free. There is a fuse in the outer conductor (AC) or the positive conductor (DC) of the voltage supply. Regarding the properties of this fuse: See General technical data on page 43. When using a DC voltage supply: the fuse is suitable for DC voltage. If the neutral conductor (AC) or the negative conductor (DC) is not grounded: there is a fuse on each of the two wires. AC voltage Supply: the wire diameter for the input supply line is at least 0.75 mm² (North America: AWG18). DC voltage Supply: the wire diameter for the input supply line is at least 1 mm² (North America: AWG16). The cross-section of the protective conductor cable is the same size as or bigger than the cross-section of the voltage supply cables. 6 Release 01 11/2012

7 The connection cables used are permitted for the specified temperature range. Relevant for North America: The power supply lines are made up of copper wire (75 C). WARNING ELECTRIC SHOCK Only start connecting the supply voltage if all the above mentioned requirements are fulfilled. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. Only for device variants with operating voltage type C or W: The devices are designed for operation with extra-low voltage (SELV). Accordingly, SELV circuits with voltage restrictions in accordance with IEC/EN may be connected to the supply voltage connectors. Make sure that the electrical installation meets local or nationally applicable safety regulations. Use undamaged parts. The device does not contain any service components. Internal fuses are only triggered if there is a fault in the device. If the device is not functioning correctly, or if it is damaged, switch off the supply voltage and return the device to the plant for inspection. Only switch on the supply voltage to the device if the housing is closed, the terminal blocks are wired up correctly and the terminal blocks are connected. Connect the protective conductor with the ground screw before you set up the other connections. When removing the connections, you remove the protective conductor last. For supply voltages with protective conductor connections: first connect the protective conductor before connecting the lines for the supply voltages. If your device has a second voltage supply connection of this type: here you also first connect the protective conductor before connecting the lines for the supply voltages. Shielded ground The shielded ground wire of the twisted pairs lines is connected to the front panel as a conductor. Beware of possible short circuits when connecting a cable section with conductive shield braiding. Release 01 11/2012 7

8 Housing WARNING ELECTRIC SHOCK Never insert any pointed objects (small screwdrivers, wires, etc.) into the product! Never insert sharp objects (small screwdrivers, wires, etc.) into the connection terminals for the supply voltage or the signal contact, and do not touch the terminals! Only for device variants with installation type B (interior maintenance area): Only install this device in a switch cabinet or in an operating site with limited access, to which only maintenance staff have access. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. WARNING FIRE HAZARD Install the device in a fire protected enclosure according to EN In the following exceptional cases, you do not require a fire-protected shell: You are supplying voltage to the device only via PoE. You are supplying only 24 V to the device and are using a fuse. Regarding the properties of this fuse: See General technical data on page 43. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. Only technicians authorized by the manufacturer are permitted to open the housing. 8 Release 01 11/2012

9 The device is grounded by the separate ground screw on the front panel. Make sure that the electrical installation meets local or nationally applicable safety regulations. The ventilation slots must not be covered to promote free air circulation. Make sure there is at least 10 cm of space above and below the device. Make sure there is at least 2 cm of space on the right and left sides of the device. The device must be installed in the vertical position. Environment The device may only be operated at the specified surrounding air temperature (temperature of the surrounding air at a distance of up to 5 cm (1.97 in) from the device) and relative air humidity specified in the technical data. Install the device in a location where the climatic threshold values specified in the technical data will be observed. Use the device only in an environment within the pollution degree specified in the technical data. When installing external antennas, adhere to the regulations of the country in which you are operating the WLAN device. In ambient temperatures under -10 C, use cabling designed for minimum temperatures. Lightning protection DANGER LIGHTNING STRIKE AND VOLTAGE SURGES Protect antennas installed outside with lightening protection devices (e.g. lightening conductors). Install overvoltage protectors on every cable. Failure to follow these instructions will result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. See the information in the WLAN Outdoor Guide, chapter Lightning and Surge Voltage Protection. You are responsible for undertaking suitable lightning protection measures to neutralize the effects of lightning strikes. Make sure that devices are installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the valid local, regional and national guidelines, laws and standards (such as VDE 0182 and IEC 62305), and in a manner suitable for the recognized and proven processes for the application and the environment. 10 Qualification requirements for personnel Qualified personnel as understood in this manual and the warning signs, are persons who are familiar with the setup, assembly, startup, and operation of this product and are appropriately qualified for their job. This includes, for example, those persons who have been: trained or directed or authorized to switch on and off, to ground and to label power circuits and devices or systems in accordance with current safety engineering standards; trained or directed in the care and use of appropriate safety equipment in accordance with the current standards of safety engineering; trained in providing first aid. General safety instructions This device is operated by electricity. You must follow precisely the prescribed safety requirements for the voltage connections in this document. See Supply voltage on page 6. Non-observance of these safety instructions can therefore cause material damage and/or injuries. Only appropriately qualified personnel should work on this device or in its vicinity. Qualified personnel must be thoroughly familiar with the warnings and maintenance procedures in accordance with this operating manual. The proper and safe operation of this device depends on proper handling during transport, proper storage and assembly, and conscientious operation and maintenance procedures. Never start operating the device with damaged components. Only use the devices in accordance with this manual. In particular, observe the warnings and safety-related information. Any work that may be required on the electrical installation may only be carried out by personnel trained for this purpose. 12 About this manual The Installation user manual contains a device description, safety instructions, a description of the display, and the other information that you need to install the device. You will find additional documents as PDF files on the enclosed CD ROM. 13 1 Device description 1.1 General device description The devices allow you to set up WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) in a local network. In contrast to a conventional network connection via copper cables and glass fibers, some of the communication is performed by means of a radio link. The devices allow you to install a new LAN or expand an existing LAN. Thanks to their high level of flexibility, you can combine large, small, mobile and non-mobile locations. Anywhere that high bandwidths, stable operation and network security is required, wireless LAN with these devices provides the ideal solution. The devices are dual-band industrial high-performance wireless LAN access points or clients complying with IEEE a/b/g/h and n. They provide a high radio output with a bandwidth of up to 450 Mbit/s. The devices support MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and Multipath. The bandwidth is increased by using the multipath transmission by means of reflections. Each WLAN module has 3 antennas for sending and receiving, to ensure stable network coverage with few shadow areas. You can choose from between a wide range of variants. You can set up your device individually based on different criteria: Number of WLAN modules Number of ports Voltage range Temperature range Access point or client Installation area Software options The BAT-R devices are designed for the special requirements of industrial automation. They meet the relevant industry standards, provide very high operational reliability, even under extreme conditions, and also provide longterm reliability and flexibility. 14 You can choose various media to connect terminal devices and other infrastructure components: twisted pair cable multimode F/O singlemode F/O There are convenient options for managing the device. Administer your devices via: a Web browser SSH Telnet HiDiscovery (software for setting up operation of the device) management software (e.g. Industrial HiVision, LANconfig/LANmonitor) a V.24 interface (locally on the device) The devices provide you with a large range of functions. Information pertaining to these functions is found in the relevant operating software manuals. These manuals are available as PDF files on the CD ROM provided, or you can download them from the Internet on the Hirschmann product pages ( The Hirschmann network components help you ensure continuous communication across all levels of the company network. 1.2 Device name The device name corresponds to the product code. The product code is made up of variables with defined positions. The variable values stand for specific product characteristics (see table 1). The device automatically selects the power supply. Note: Switch over to a redundant power supply may not be seamless. If the power supply currently active is interrupted and another power supply takes over, the device may reboot to activate the redundant power supply Operating voltage type W A 2-pin terminal block is available to supply the device. 20 1.5.4 Devices with operating voltage type W: Power over Ethernet (PoE) The devices are powered devices complying with the PoE standard 802.3af. You can therefore conveniently supply these devices with power via the LAN cabling. This makes it unnecessary to have a separate power supply for every individual device, thus considerably reducing the installation work. The power supply to the LAN is input centrally, or via a PoE injector or a power hub/power switch. You will find more information on page Ethernet ports You can connect terminal devices and other segments on the ports of the device via twisted pair cables or F/O cables Gigabit combo port Alternatively, you can connect F/O (via SFP modules) or twisted pairs to a combo port. Note: Plug a connector or SFP module that you want to use for the data transmission only into the socket of the combo port. Only for devices with voltage supply type W: 10/100/1000 Mbit/s twisted-pair connection, PoE-capable These connections are RJ45 sockets. The device is supplied with PoE voltage via these connections. 10/100/1000 Mbit/s TP ports enable the connection of terminal devices or independent network segments according to the IEEE BASE- T/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T standard. 22 1000 MBit/s F/O ports enable the connection of terminal devices or independent network segments in compliance with the IEEE BASE-SX/1000BASE-LX standard. You can find information on the connectable antennas on the Internet under The devices have 3 reverse SMA connections (SMA = Sub-Miniature Version A) on each WLAN module. 1.8 Display elements After the operating voltage is set up, the software starts and initializes itself. Afterwards, the device performs a self-test. During this process, various LEDs light up. These actions last less than 1 minute Meaning of the LEDs The following terms describe the behavior of the LEDs: Regular flashing means that the LED is running through the described statuses in the specified sequence at intervals (e.g. red/green or red/off). Brief flashing means that the LED lights up very briefly in the color specified, then is switched off for a much longer time (about 10x as long). Inverse flashing means that the LED is switched off for a brief time and then lights up for considerably longer (about 10x as long) in the specified color. Flickering means that the LED switches on and off at irregular intervals. Running light means the coordinated glowing of several LEDs. This gives the optical impression that a light source is moving from left to right and back. 22 Release 01 11/2012

23 1.8.2 Device state These LEDs provide information about conditions which affect the operation of the whole device. P2 always performs signaling if a voltage is solely present on the connection for supply voltage 2. In all other cases, signaling is performed by P1. 27 The reset button has two different functions, which are triggered by pressing the button for different lengths of time: Resetting the configuration (hard reset) the button is pressed for more than 5 seconds but less than 10 seconds. All LEDs on the device light up continuously in red. When the reset button is released, the device restarts with the factory settings. The hard reset can be used, for example, if you have to reconfigure the device independently of any existing settings, or if no connection to the device configuration can be made. Note: Save the current configuration of the device before the reset. After a hard reset, the device restarts with the factory settings based on the firmware used, and all custom settings are lost. Device restart (soft reset) the button is pressed for less than 5 seconds or more than 10 seconds. The device restarts. Release 01 11/

28 2 Device installation Before installing and starting up the device, note the safety instructions (see page 5 onwards). 2.1 Overview of installation Two or more devices configured with the same IP address can cause unpredictable operation of your network. WARNING UNINTENTIONAL OPERATION IN DEVICE Install and maintain a process that assigns a unique IP address to every device in the network. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. The devices have been developed for practical application in a harsh industrial environment. On delivery, the device is ready for operation. The following steps should be performed to install and configure a BAT-R: Unpacking and checking Installing the device and grounding Installing the SFP modules (optional) Mounting external antennas Wiring the terminal blocks (optional) Startup procedure Connecting the data lines Configuring the devices 2.2 Unpacking and checking Check that the contents of the package are complete (see page 50 Scope of delivery ). 29 2.3 Installing the device and grounding Mounting on the DIN rail WARNING FIRE HAZARD Install the device in a fire protected enclosure according to EN In the following exceptional cases, you do not require a fire-protected shell: You are supplying voltage to the device only via PoE. You are supplying only 24 V to the device and are using a fuse. Regarding the properties of this fuse: See General technical data on page 43. WARNING ELECTRIC SHOCK Only for device variants with installation type B (interior maintenance area): Only install this device in a switch cabinet or in an operating site with limited access, to which only maintenance staff have access. 30 Note: Make sure there is at least 10 cm of space above and below the device. Make sure there is at least 2 cm of space on the right and left sides of the device. Note: The shield ground wire of the twisted pair lines is connected to the front panel as a conductor. Mount the device on a 35 mm DIN rail in accordance with DIN EN Attach the upper snap-in guide of the device into the DIN rail and press the device down against the DIN rail until it snaps into place Wall mounting You can attach the device to a wall mounting panel available as an accessory. See Accessories on page 51. Follow the assembly instructions enclosed with the accessory Grounding The housing is grounded via the separate ground screw on the bottom right of the front panel. The device variants with operating voltage type C and K have a protective grounding. The device variants with operating voltage type W have a function grounding. Connect the ground wire to the ground screw of the device. Note: For safety reasons, make sure you only connect the ground wire before you set up the other connections. 30 Release 01 11/2012

Push the SFP module with the lock closed into the socket until it latches audibly in place. Note: For this device, only use suitable SFP modules from Hirschmann. 32 If you would like to connect several antennas to a WLAN module, align the antennas so that the points of the antennas point away form each other in a star shape. Install at least one external antenna on the WLAN module that you would like to use. Insert the terminators supplied into unused sockets in order to avoid radio signals from one WLAN module being received by the other WLAN module. 2.6 Wiring the terminal blocks (optional) WARNING ELECTRIC SHOCK Only connect a supply voltage as described in the data plate of your device. Never insert sharp objects (small screwdrivers, wires, etc.) into the connection terminals for the supply voltage or the signal contact, and do not touch the terminals! Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage. Note: The supply voltage is electrically isolated from the housing. Note: For devices with 2 power supply units: The device provides for voltage supply redundancy with no load distribution. Both inputs are separate from one another. With non-redundant supply of the mains voltage, the device reports a power failure. 36 2.7.1 Mounting the terminal blocks and switching on the supply voltage Note: Relevant for North America: The torque for tightening the screws on the power connecter to the device is 4.5 lb in (0.51 Nm). The tightening torque for fixing the signal contact terminal block to the device is 3 lb in (0.34 Nm). Use screws to secure the connecters to the device. Switch on the supply voltage Connecting the voltage supply via PoE CAUTION EQUIPMENT DAMAGE In a PoE installation, use only devices that adhere to the 802.3af standard. Failure to follow these instructions can result in injury or equipment damage. Connecting the voltage supply via PoE starts the operation of the device. 2.8 Connecting the data lines Gigabit combo port Note: Plug a connector or SFP module that you want to use for the data transmission only into the socket of the combo port. 10/100/1000 Mbit/s twisted pair connection, PoE-capable You will find more information on page 20. 38 3 Configuring the devices The following options are available for configuring the device: The wired local network (LAN). The wireless network (WLAN). Prerequisite is that the WLAN encryption (e.g. WPA2) is set suitably in a device with a wireless interface and in the configuration computer. The serial V.24 interface. 39 Transmission power The operator of a WLAN radio installation must adhere to the applicable transmission threshold values. Use the LANconfig or the Webconfig to start the configuration of the device. (This software is located on the CD provided.) Go to the settings for Wireless LAN. Enter the country in which you are installing the device (see the following figure): Open the configuration for the physical interface to which you are connecting the antenna. On the Radio tab you will find an entry field for the antenna gain (see the following figure): Release 01 11/

41 4 Maintenance and service When designing this device, Hirschmann was largely able to forego using parts that are subject to waer and tear. The parts subject to wear are designed to last longer than the lifetime of the product when it is operated properly. Operate this device according to the specifications (see Technical data ). Relays are subject to natural wear. This wear depends on the frequency of the switching operations. Check the resistance of the closed relay contacts and the switching function depending on the frequency of the switching operations. Hirschmann is continually working to improve and develop our software. You should regularly check whether there is a new version of the software that provides you with additional benefits. You will find software information and downloads on the product pages of the Hirschmann website. Depending on the degree of pollution in the operating environment, check at regular intervals that the ventilation slots in the device are not obstructed. Note: You will find information about the complaints and returns procedures in the Internet under Release 01 11/

42 5 Disassembly Disconnect the data lines. Switch off the supply voltage. Disconnect the terminal blocks. Remove the external antennas. Remove the SFP module by pulling it out of the socket at the opened locking device. Close the socket with a protective cap. Disconnect the grounding. Note: For safety reasons, make sure you disconnect the grounding from all connections last. To take the device off the DIN rail, insert a screwdriver horizontally under the housing into the locking slide, pull it (without tipping the screwdriver) downwards and lift the device upwards.
