1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Iota Home Energy Monitoring System. You have made an important first step towards improving the efficiency of your home, reducing your monthly electricity bill and combating the global problem of energy waste. The Iota Home Energy Monitoring System is not only a tool for building energy use awareness, but is also a handcrafted, piece of artwork that you will hopefully be proud to display prominently within your household. Inside the box you should find the following items: Iota Base Station Iota Wireless Display Iota Smart Power Bar 9V DC Power Supply If any of the items listed above are not present please contact your Iota Energy Customer Service Department (contact details on page 15). In order to set- up your Iota Home Energy Monitoring System you will need the following tools and equipment: #3 Robertson screwdriver HDMI compatible monitor or TV (a VGA monitor and a VGA- to- HDMI adapter can be used instead) USB keyboard USB mouse All steps in the following manual must be closely followed in order to correctly set- up and operate the Iota Home Energy Monitoring System.
2 1. Iota Base Station The Base Station is the heart of the Iota Home Energy Monitoring System. It facilitates all communication with your home s smart meter as well as controlling the Wireless Display and Smart Power Bar. Additionally the Base Station hosts the Web User Interface (WUI). For all of these reasons it is important that you set up the Base Station first. 1.1 Initial Setup Figure 1 Base Station 1. Open the Base Station by removing the four screws in the bottom using a #3 Robertson screwdriver. Figure 2 Removing the Screws
3 2. Connect a monitor or HDTV to the HDMI port on the Raspberry Pi. If an HDMI monitor is not available an older VGA monitor can be used in conjunction with a VGA- to- HDMI adapter. Raspberry Pi HDMI cable to monitor or TV Figure 3 HDMI Connection 3. Connect a USB keyboard to one of the free ports on the USB hub. USB keyboard Figure 4 USB Keyboard Connection
4 4. Connect a USB mouse to another one of the free ports on the USB hub. 5. Plug the power supply cable into the socket on the back of the Base Station. 6. Plug power supply wall adapter into a free outlet. Figure 5 Power Cable Connection 7. Once the Raspbian desktop loads, double click on the icon. Figure 6 Raspbian Desktop 8. Click on the button in the WIFI Config dialog box.
5 9. Double- click on your home s wireless network. 10. Enter your wifi password into the PSK field and then click The Raspberry Pi should now be connected to your home s wifi network. Enter wifi password here Figure 7 Wifi Configuration 11. Double- click on the icon. 12. Type sudo shutdown r now and press ENTER. The Raspberry Pi will now reboot. 13. Disconnect the keyboard, mouse and monitor. 14. Close the Base Station and replace the four screws to secure the top half to the bottom half. 1.2 Positioning 1. Place the Iota Base Station in a suitable location in your home. When choosing where to place your Iota Base Station it is important to consider several factors. The Base Station needs to be located near to a wall outlet for powering. Also, because the Base Station is used to charge the Wireless Display it is important that the space above it is free of obstructions. Place the Base Station in a location such that when the Wireless Display is resting on top of it for charging, it is still visible (i.e. not on a high ledge or inside a cupboard). Side tables, desks and bookcases all make a good home for the Iota Base Station. 2. Power the Base Station as described in Section 1.1, Steps 5 and 6.
6 2. Iota Smart Power Bar The Smart Power Bar is a tool which allows you to remotely control electrical appliances and automate when they turn on or off. The physical set- up of the Smart Power Bar will be explained in this section and its operation described in the next. Figure 8 Smart Power Bar 2.1 Positioning and Powering 1. Position the Smart Power Bar in an appropriate location in your home. The Smart Power Bar must be placed near to an electrical wall outlet. When choosing a location, you should consider the proximately to electrical appliances that you may want to connect to the Smart Power Bar. The Smart Power Bar can be moved around easily in the future as required. 2. Plug the power cable into an available wall outlet. 2.2 Connecting Appliances 1. Connect desired electrical appliances to the outlets on the face of the Smart Power Bar. Note the letter corresponding to each connected appliance for future operational purposes. The LEDs next to each outlet on the Smart Power Bar indicate whether the outlet is on or off. Indicator LED Outlet label Figure 9 Outlet Labels and Indicator LEDs
7 3. Iota Web User Interface (WUI) The WUI provides you with additional, detailed information regarding your electricity consumption. Also, it allows you to control and automate the Smart Power Bar. Finally, the WUI is required to connect the Iota Base Station to your home s smart electricity meter. 3.1 Connecting to the Smart Meter Figure 10 WUI 1. Open an internet browser on a computer which is connected to the same wifi network as your Base Station. 2. In the address bar type iota.local:8000 and press ENTER. You will be presented with the Web User Interface as seen in Figure 10 above. 3. Record the MAC Address and Installation Code of your Iota Home Energy System. These pieces information uniquely identify your device and are required to connect it to your home s smart electricity meter. They are clearly printed in bold on the product packaging. 4. Contact your local electricity utility and explain that you would like to connect an In- Home Display to your smart meter. You will be asked for the MAC Address and Installation Code described in Step 3 above. 5. Once your electricity utility has activated the ZigBee module in your smart meter and permitted the joining of devices, click the button on the WUI.
8 6. Wait 30 seconds. The indicator will now read and the button will change to the following:. If this does not happen repeat Steps 4-6.Your Iota Home Energy Monitoring System should now be connected to the smart meter. 3.2 Controlling the Smart Power Bar 1. Click the buttons on the bottom left side of the WUI to turn on and off the corresponding outlets on the Smart Power Bar. The button background colour will change to green when the corresponding outlet is on. 2. Select an time and time for a particular outlet by choosing the hour, minute and second from the corresponding drop down menu. Times are chosen using a 24- hr format. Toggle control for Outlet A Drop down menus for setting ON/OFF times Currently applied ON/OFF times for Outlet B Figure 11 Smart Power Bar Control 3. Click the button to apply the chosen On/Off times to the corresponding outlet. The selected times will now appear next to the and indicators for the chosen outlet. The outlet will now turn on and off at the selected times until changed.
9 3.3 Interpreting Data 1. Observe current electricity demand with the animated, colour- changing gauge at the top of the WUI. The position, colour and numerical value associated with the gauge will change in real- time as electrical appliances are turned on and off in your home. The maximum value of the gauge is updated every 24 hours based on your home s peak demand. Current demand in watts Peak demand from the previous day Figure 12 Current Demand Gauge 2. Observe your current spending rate with the text box located below the gauge. This value will change according to your home s electricity demand and current pricing tier (explained later on in Step 5 of this section). Current amount of money being spent per hour Figure 13 Current Spending Text Box
10 3. Observe the amount spent during each hour of the current day with the bar graph at the bottom of the WUI. This bar graph will be updated every hour, on the hour and reset every morning at 1:00 am. Amount spent in dollars Hourly periods from current day Figure 14 Hourly Spending Bar Graph 4. Observe the amount spent during each day of the current week with the bar graph at the top, right corner of the WUI. This bar graph will be updated every day at 12:00 am and reset on Monday morning. Amount spent in dollars Daily periods from current week Figure 15 Daily Spending Bar Graph
11 5. Observe the current pricing tier and price/kwh with the indicators in the bottom right corner of the WUI. These values will be updated whenever the pricing tier and price/kwh changes. Current price per kwh Figure 16 Current Price and Tier Current pricing tier
12 4. Iota Wireless Display The Wireless Display is like your home s electricity speedometer. This gauge- like device is meant to be placed somewhere in your home where it will be very visible. The more often you look at the Wireless Display the more money you will save! Figure 16 Wireless Display 4.1 Turning on and Reading the Wireless Display 1. Turn on the Wireless Display using the power switch located on the back. If you have set up the Iota Base Station correctly, the Wireless Display should now automatically connect to it and begin displaying you how much money you are currently spending on electricity. If the Display doesn t turn on, it may need to be charged. Follow the steps in Section 4.2 to do this. Figure 17 Power Switch
13 2. Observe current electricity demand with the analog gauge. The position of the orange needle gives you a quick, at- a- glance, indication of how much money you are spending on electricity. If the needle is all the way to the left and the gauge is glowing green, then you are only using a little electricity (that s good!). If the needle is all the way to the right and the gauge is glowing red, then you are using a lot of electricity (that s not good). The furthest position to the right corresponds to the maximum instantaneous demand of electricity that your Iota system has ever recorded for your home. 3. Observe your current spending rate with the digital OLED display. The OLED display below the gauge shows the exact amount of money being spent on electricity per hour. If the display reads $1.00/h for example, that means that the total amount of electricity being consumed by all of the loads in your home at that moment amounts to a cost of $1.00 per hour. If you left all of the electrical devices in your home in this same state for 5 hours, you will have used $5.00 worth of electricity. 4.2 Charging the Wireless Display When the Wireless Display s battery is low, you will see a B appear in the top right- hand corner of the Iota wireless display s OLED screen. This indicates that it is time to charge the Display. Low battery indicator Figure 18 Low Battery Indicator
14 1. Place the Wireless Display in its cradle on top of the Base Station. The red charging light on the Base Station will turn on to show that the battery is being charged. Leave the Iota wireless display on the base station until the red charging light turns off. Charging indicator light 2. When the red charging light turns off, remove the Wireless Display from the Base Station. It is not necessary to remove the Iota Wireless Display from the Base Station when it has finished charging. If you have found a convenient location in your home for the Base Station, then you may leave the Display on top of it and never have to worry about charging. 4.3 Using the Wireless Display to Determine the Cost of Running an Appliance. 1. Power down or unplug the appliance in question from the wall outlet. 2. Write down the cost per hour from the Iota Wireless Display while the appliance is powered off. 3. Plug in the appliance and turn it on. Figure 18 Low Battery Indicator 4. Wait for the Wireless Display to update, and then write down the new cost per hour. 5. Subtract the initial cost per hour from the cost per hour seen while the appliance is running. This difference is the cost per hour of running that particular appliance. Try this with any electrical load in your home to find out how much it costs you to run!
15 Conclusion We hope this manual has provided clear and useful instructions regarding the set- up and operation of the Iota Home Energy Monitoring System. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Iota Energy Customer Service Department: Phone: (250) (250)
