3 1. Introduction The Pyxis ST-565 inline fluorometer probe measures the concentration of tolyltriazole (TTA) and halogen stable tolyltriazole (HST) in cooling tower water. The ST-565 probe excites the sample water with a deep UV light and measures a narrow band near UV fluorescent emission. It can be connected to any controller that accepts an isolated or non-isolated 4-20mA input. The ST-565 probe is a smart device. In addition to measuring fluorescence, the ST-565 probe has extra photoelectric components that monitor the color and turbidity of the sample water. This extra feature allows automatic color and turbidity compensation to eliminate interferences common in real-world samples. Other features of the ST-565 probe include: Menu-driven calibration can be carried out by a computer, a smart phone, or other Pyxis handheld devices via a USB or Wifi/Bluetooth connection. Diagnostic information (probe fouling, color or turbidity over range, failure modes) are available during calibrations. The water sample does not need to be acidified. Sample ph between 6.4 to 10.0 and the sample PTSA concentration (<300 ppb) do not affect the azole measurement. 2. Un-packaging the Instrument Remove the instrument and accessories from the shipping container and inspect each item for any damage that may have occurred during shipping. Verify that all accessory items are included. Installation The ST-565 probe is shipped in a PVC tee. The tee has two ¾ inch NPT ports (sample in and out) and can be fluidically connected to a sample panel. The orientation of the flow with respect to the gravity of earth is not critical. The tee can be vertically or horizontally installed in the sample pipe system. 4

6 4.1. Connect to a controller Follow the wiring table below to connect the ST-565 probe to a controller. Note that the 24V power ground and the negative 4-20 ma terminal in the ST-565 probe are internally connected. If a separate DC power supplier other than that from the controller is used, make sure that the output from the power supplier is within 22 to 26 VDC. Connection to a Computer The ST-565 probe can be connected to a PC via the Pyxis USB-RS485 adapter (Item Number: MA- 485) or the Pyxis Wifi/Bluetooth adapter (Item: MA-485BW). The adapter has the same male and female bulkhead cable connectors as the probe and the probe extension cable. To connect the probe to a PC, plug the USB cable to a USB port in the PC and connect the adapter s connectors to the corresponding connectors from the probe and the probe extension cable. The probe extension cable must be connected to a 24V DC power source to power the probe and the adapter. 5. Probe Calibration 5.1. Download and Install Probe Configurator Download the Probe Configurator software package from Double click Probe Configurator Setup.msi file to install. Two Probe Configurator icons will be placed on the computer desktop for the USB connection and Wifi/Bluetooth connection respectively Calibration via Probe Configurator The probe is calibrated before shipping. It outputs 4 ma for zero ppm TTA/HST, 12 ma for 2.5 ppm TTA/HST, and 20 ma for 5 ppm. The probe can be recalibrated using the Probe Configurator Software. 6

7 Connect the probe to a Windows computer using the USB-RS485 adapter (Item: MA-485) or the Wifi/Bluetooth adapter (Item: MA-WB). Double click the corresponding Probe Configurator icon to launch the program. If the probe is connected to the computer properly, the Probe Configurator software will detect the com port number and set up the communication parameters automatically. Click Devices tab to select ST565-HST as shown in figure 3. Click Connect button to connect the program to the probe. If the connection is successful, the probe system parameters will be filled as shown in the lower left in figure 4. Figure 3. Select Probe type ST565-HST 7

Probe being connected To connect the probe to the Probe Configurator software via the Wifi/Bluetooth adapter, please connect the Wifi/Bluetooth adapter between the probe and probe extension cable connectors. Click Probe Configurator Wifi icon to launch the program. Click Search to find the Wifi/Bluetooth adapter. Click Connect to connect Probe Configurator to the probe (figure 5). 8

9 Figure 5. Wifi Connection Zero Point Calibration Put the probe into deionized water. Click Zero Cal button to carry out the zero point calibration. If calibration is successful, the Calibration Successful message will be prompted Slope Calibration Put the probe into a solution with known TTA/HST concentration. Click Slope Cal button to carry out the slope calibration. The TTA/HST concentration in the calibration solution should be in the range of 1 to 5 ppm, ideally 2 to 4 ppm. If calibration is successful, the Calibration Successful message will be prompted. If errors are determined, an error message indicating the cause of the errors will be shown. 9

10 Figure 6. Slope calibration The zero point calibration and slope calibration can be carried out separately. It is recommended that the slope calibration be carried out after the zero point calibration. Direct sunlight or indoor light on the probe should be avoided although it is not necessary to completely shield the probe from the ambient light during both the zero point and slope calibrations ma Output Setup The default setup is 20 ma output for 5 ppm TTA/HST. Click on ma2ppb button to reset the current-to-ppm scale can be configured Calibration on the Controller If the probe is set to output 20 ma at 5 ppm, the controller should be set up to convert 20 ma to 5 ppm and 4 ma to 0 ppb correspondingly. Optionally, the probe can be calibrated by changing the conversion factor on the controller without being undergone the zero point and slope calibration steps. Please follow the controller generic 4-20mA analog input calibration procedure to calibrate the probe. The advantage of the calibration by re-scaling the 4-20mA input to a ppm value is a quick alternative. The TTA/HST ppb concentration in the water sample can be determined by using an offline fluorometer or other methods such as the treatment product concentration. One can force the controller to show the determined TTA/HST concentration without the need to calibrate the probe using a standard solution. The disadvantage is that this method is only valid in a small range of TTA/HST concentration. Potential probe operation problems may not be able identified as they would in the zero and slope calibration procedures. 10

11 5.4. Modbus TRU The ST-565 probe is a Modbus slave device. In addition to the ppm TTA/HST value, a range of operational parameters including warning and error message are available via Modbus TRU connection. Contact Pyxis Lab Customer Service (service@pyxis-lab.com) for more information. 6. Maintenance and Troubleshooting 6.1. General Maintenance The flow channel of the probe should be cleaned once a month using a soft brush. Deposit and debris should be removed. The probe cleanliness can be checked using the diagnosis function of Probe Configurator as show in figure 7. When contact Pyxis technical support, please save the diagnosis information to a file using Data Export and the file to service@pyxis-lab.com. The probe can be cleaned with mild acid solution such as 1% citric acid. Do not use organic solvents or strong acid/base to clean the probe. Carry out routine calibration check against a TTA standard. If necessary, carry out the zero point and slope calibration. Avoid long term storage at temperature over 100 F. In an outdoor installation, properly shield the probe from direct sunlight and precipitation. Figure 7. Diagnosis and cleanliness check 11
