LPT and RFD function The LPT (Link Pass-through) allows the media converter to monitor both the fiber and copper RX ports for loss of signal. In case of a loss of RX signal on one media port, the converter will automatically disable the TX signal to the other media port, thus passing through the link fault. RFD (Remote Fault Detect) lets the converter stop sending link pulse to the link partner once a loss of the fiber RX signal is encountered. Then the link partner will synchronously stop sending data. FEF prevents loss of valuable data transmitted over invalid link. Combining LPT and FEF troubleshooting features of SGPAT10xx-100, both end devices can be notified of a loss of fiber link. When link fault pass through function is enabled, link status on TX port will inform the FX port of the same device and vice versa. From the link fault pass through procedure illustrates in the figure below, if link fail happens on TX port (1), the local FX port sends non-idle pattern to notice the remote FX port (2). The remote FX port then forces its TX port to link failed after receiving the non-idle pattern (4). In other words, this mechanism will alert the link fault status of local TX port to the remote converter s TX port, and the link status of the remote TX port will become off. Link status LED will also be off for both SGPAT10xx-100 and its link partner. PoE Technology Power over Ethernet or PoE technology describes a system to transfer electrical power, along with data, to remote devices over standard twisted-pair cable in an Ethernet network. This technology is useful for powering IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, network cameras, remote network switches, embedded computers, and other appliances where it would be inconvenient, expensive (mains wiring must often be done by qualified and/or licensed electricians for legal or insurance reasons) or infeasible to supply power separately. It doesn't require modification of existing Ethernet cabling infrastructure. IEEE 802.3af (Power over Ethernet), the specification allows the powering device to use a voltage between VDC, though the nominal voltage is 48V, over two of the four available pairs on a Cat.3/Cat.5e cable with a selectable current of ma subject to a maximum load power of 15.40W. Only about 12.95W are available after counting cable losses, and most switched power supplies will lose another 10 25% of the available power. Page 12 of 23
IEEE 802.3at (Max. PoE output power consumption up to 30W) is an updated standard in progress referred to as PoE plus or 802.3at introduces increases available power. Numerous non-standard schemes had been used prior to PoE standardization to provide Power over Ethernet cabling. Some are still in active use. The standard describes two types of devices: 1. Power Sourcing Equipment(PSE) and Powered Devices(PD), and 2. PSE provides power to the PD. The PoE PSE+ converter may auto-detect PD and provide power via one of two valid four-wire connections. In each four-wire connection, the two conductors associated with a pair each carry the same nominal current in both magnitude and polarity. Refer to following figure in conjunction with PSE pinout alternative table, illustrates the valid alternatives. PSE Pinout Alternative Table PD and PSE Eight-Pin Modular Jack (RJ-45) Page 13 of 23
2. Installation Hardware and Cable Installation Caution: Wear a grounding device to avoid damage from electrostatic discharge. Power Installation Power requirement: 100~240 VAC, 50~60Hz. Connect to an AC power source with AC power cord. Wall Mount Installation (Optional) For some applications, you will find it convenient to mount SGPAT10xx-100 on the wall using the wall mount holes on the side of the unit (shown below). Desktop Installation (Optional) For other applications, you will find it convenient to mount SGPAT10xx-100 using the four provided adhesive-backed rubber feet (location shown above). Page 14 of 23
Cabling Requirements To help ensure a successful installation and keep the network performance good, please take care on the cabling requirement. Cables with worse specification will render the LAN to work poorly. Cabling Requirements for TP The grade of the cable must be Cat. 5e with a maximum length of 100 meters. Cabling Requirements for FX 1000Base-SX/LX network only support full-duplex mode. The Switch-based Media Converter breaks up TP and Fiber segments collision domain to extend the cabling distance. 16 3. Applications 1. SGPAT10xx-100 connected to IP CAM (PD) The following is a simple example to illustrate how to use SGPAT10xx-100 PoE PSE Media Converter to set up your system, and to test if your SGPAT10xx-100 functions normally. Use a suitable fiber cable to connect these two SGPAT10xx-100s, use Ethernet cables to connect the PC to the SGPAT10xx-100, and connect the IP CAM as shown in Fig. 3-1 You can view the image from PC through IP CAM after connection is successful. Fig. 3-1: IP CAM (PD) Connection 2. SGPAT10xx-100 connect to PoE Splitter In this example, the SGPAT10xx-100 TP connects to a PoE splitter, and FX connects to a GbE converter or switch that depends on the user. Fig. 3-2: IP CAM (PD) Connection (PoE Splitter or Converter/Switch Connection) Page 16 of 23
LPT (Link Pass Through) Applications The Converter model of LPT (link pass through) in TX/FX converter application is controlled by the software and instantly take effect. Link status on one port is propagated to the other port to notice the remote nodes. If the TP port is unplugged, this converter stops transmission on fiber port. This causes the remote fiber node link to fail. LED shows the link failure on both TP and fiber ports. If the fiber link fails, this converter restarts auto-negotiation on TP port but always stays in the link failure state. This causes the remote TP node link to fail. The LED also shows the link failure on both the TP and fiber ports. See Fig. 4-1 and 4-4 below for the normal status when the link succeeds. See Fig. 4-2 thru Fig.4-6 for the error status when TP Cable A, Fiber Cable B, or Fiber Cable C fails to connect. Note: The Link through (LPT) function only takes effect with the LPT DIP switch in the Enable position. The SGPAT10xx-100 can support the following two LPT typical applications: 1. Converter to Converter in pairs Fig. 4-1: Normal status via LPT converter Fig. 4-2: The status as TP Cable A or D is broken Fig. 4-3: The status as Fiber Cable B or C is broken Page 17 of 23
