4 1.0 Overview The INT-2056 is a versatile switching demultiplexer for ITU/CEPT telecommunications standard E3 rate ( Mbps) PCM signals. It accepts 20 independent E3 inputs and allows the user to demultiplex and selectively output any 64 of the 320 possible E1 tributaries embedded within the E3 inputs. Optionally the unit also provides 20 E3 outputs. The user may select any E3 input to be routed to any one or more of these E3 outputs, providing a fully non-blocking 20 x 20 E3 switching capability. E3 switching is completely independent from E1 output selection. Control and status is provided via a 9- pin D connector serial port with signaling conforming to EIA standard RS-232C. Control and status via front panel or EtherNet are also available as options. The configuration of the unit maintained in non-volatile memory and the unit is restored to its prior operating state when power is applied. The unit is a 10 ½ high standard 19 rack mounted enclosure requiring 175 Watts of 120 VAC 50/60 Hertz power. 2.0 Functional Description A functional block diagram of the INT-2056 is shown on the following page. The unit accepts 20 E3 inputs. These must conform to the ITU/CCITT recommendations G.703 and G.751 for Mbps operation, and be AMI/HDB3 encoded. Inputs are unbalanced (single ended), accepting a 75 Ohm impedance coaxial cable via a BNC style connector. Cable equalization (per square root of frequency) is provided for various cable lengths and is selectable by the user for losses up to 13.2 db. The 20 E3 inputs are routed to four 16 channel E3 to E1 demultiplexer / selector cards and optionally to an E3 switching output card. Each of the E3 to E1 demultiplexer cards has a 20 input to 16 output non-blocking switch which allows any E3 input to be routed to any one or more of the 16 independent E3 to E1 demultiplexer channels on that card. Each demultiplexer channel accepts an E3 input, demultiplexes and outputs all 16 E1 tributaries embedded within that E3. These E1 tributaries are routed to a selector circuit where one of the 16 is selected and routed to an E1 output Line Interface Unit (LIU). E1 outputs conform to ITU/CCITT recommendation G.703 for Mbps operation, and are AMI/HDB3 coded. E1 outputs are balanced, 120-Ohm impedance for use with twisted pair cabling using a bayonette style Twinax connector. The optional E3 output card has a 20 input to 20 output non-blocking switch and allows any of the E3 inputs to be routed to any one or more of the twenty E3 output LIU s. E3 outputs conform to the ITU/CCITT recommendation G.703 for Mbps operation, and are unbalanced (single ended), providing a BNC style connector for a 75-Ohm impedance coaxial cable. Command and control is accomplished via an EIA standard RS-232C serial interface. It is compatible with an IBM/PC or equivalent serial port using a straight through cable with a 9-pin D style connector on each end. See the command and control section below for a detailed description of the command set. Control and status via front panel switches and EtherNet are also available as options. 6 3.0 Hardware Elements The following items make up the INT-2056: 1. Modular chassis: The chassis is compatible with RETMA standard 19 rack mounting. It is 10 ½ high (6U) and 22.6 deep excluding connectors and handles. Mechanical drawings of the front and rear panels are shown on the following pages. The chassis has six slots in the rear panel that accommodate six 13 wide and 14 deep printed circuit cards. Cards may be installed and removed individually from the rear of the unit. The top card is the E3 input board followed by four E3 -> E1 demultiplexer output boards in the four slots below it. The optional E3 output board occupies the bottom chassis slot channel E3 input printed circuit board (1) channel E3 -> E1 demultiplexer output printed circuit boards (4) channel E3 output printed circuit board (1 optional). 3.1 External Signal Interface Twenty E3 rate inputs are accepted via 75 Ohm BNC connectors numbered 1 through 20 that extend through the mounting plate of the printed circuit board in the top slot of the unit. The first sixteen E1 rate outputs are made available via 120-Ohm Twinax connectors numbered 1 through 16 that extend through the mounting plate of the printed circuit board in the second slot of the unit. Similarly E1 rate outputs 17 through 32, 33 through 48 and 49 through 64 are made available from the cards in the next three slots. Optionally twenty E3 rate outputs are provided via 75 Ohm BNC connectors numbered 1 through 20 that extend through the mounting plate of the printed circuit board in the bottom slot of the unit. Remote control is available via a 9 pin D style connector permanently mounted on the left side of the unit. A/C power is accepted by the unit via a standard IEC style filtered power input module on the left side of the unit, and must be 120 VAC nominal 50/60 Hertz. 3.2 Internal Configuration Options The INT-2056 provides no user selectable internal on card configuration options. 3.3 Preventive Maintenance There are no routine maintenance procedures. No periodic alignments or adjustments are required. Intronics, Inc Lafayette Blvd. Fredericksburg, VA (540) Fax (540)

9 4.0 Command and Control The INT-2056 may be configured by the user through the use of its RS-232 remote control interface. The configuration of the unit is stored in battery backed up memory at all times. It is preserved while the unit is powered down, or during a power failure, and is restored when power is applied. The front panel control switches and display are provided to enable this capability as a future system enhancement and are unused at this time. The front panel RESET switch is functional and restarts the embedded microprocessor. 4.1 Remote Control Protocol Remote control is accomplished via the RS-232 interface. Commands to and responses from the INT-2056 are in the form of either upper or lower case ASCII characters. Commands follow the format below and are terminated with a carriage return: ccccc xxx yyy zzz...etc...<cr> ccccc is the command verb xxx yyy zzz...etc... are command parameters The command verb and each parameter consist of one or more printable ASCII characters ( e.g. ASCII code > 20 hex ). The command verb and each parameter are separated by one or more non-printable characters such as a space (ASCII code 20 hex), or by a comma or equals character. Any separation characters before the command verb or after the last parameter are ignored. BS (backspace) or DEL (delete) erases the character immediately preceding it, and are useful in correcting keyboard entry errors After its initial power on message the unit maintains the "speak only when spoken to discipline", responding to commands and status queries that are received and prompting the user with a > character for the next command. Any command line beginning with a slash character is treated as a comment and ignored. The following response is sent when an invalid command has been received: <CR>ERROR: INVALID COMMAND <CR>><SP> Carr Rtn, >, Space The following response is sent when an invalid parameter has been received: <CR>ERROR: INVALID PARAMETER <CR>><SP> Carr Rtn, >, Space The following response is sent when a valid command has been completed: <CR>><SP> Carr Rtn, >, Space Intronics, Inc Lafayette Blvd. Fredericksburg, VA (540) Fax (540)
10 It is not necessary for the user to enter all the parameters for a command. Parameters that are to the right of the last parameter entered are assigned their default values. This is a convenience that allows the user to avoid the necessity of typing parameter values that may rarely vary from their defaults On-Line HELP Facility The command verb HELP results in the following: > help Intronics, Inc.
