3 3 INTRODUCTION: Remote telemetry units (RTU) are designed to provide monitoring and control of various process parameters between two remote locations. An RTU system consists of two essentially identical Myriad units, one located at each remote location. Connection between the units can be hard wired, spread spectrum radio modem or lease line telephone modem. Communication occurs at 19.2 KB Because of the identical nature of the units they are not known as Master and Slave but rather local and remote. The local unit is whichever one you are in front of with the other being the remote. RTU s have addresses and are factory configured as NODE 1 and NODE 2. Addresses may be changed in the field if required or more RTU s are added to the Network. COMMUNICATION: Communication occurs at 19.2K Baud over any mediums capable of this speed. If a process or status change occurs at a local unit it will be sent to the remote unit and vice versa. For redundancy all data may be sent to the remote unit periodically on a programmable poll rate interval (see SCADA settings). Otherwise data is only sent when a process value or status changes, thus power consumption is kept to a minimum. (A tangible benefit in solar powered systems.) COMMUNICATION FAILURE: Communication failure is of critical importance in telemetry systems. It cannot be assumed that communication is good all of the time. Telephone line failure or atmospheric conditions can occasionally cause temporary breaks in communication between RTU s. In order to constantly monitor communication a timer runs in the local unit whenever the unit is powered. This timer value is sent to the remote unit periodically (Poll Rate 6). If this data does not change for the duration of the Poll Rate, the internal communication fail counter will increase by 1 (see diagrams). When this counter exceeds the COMMFAIL LIMIT (adjustable) a local output will energize to initiate an alarm monitoring device, light, buzzer, autodialer, etc. OPERATION: Mounting and control functions are available on both RTU s. For a detailed overview on input/output relationships see Table 1, attached.

Do not exceed the rated current of the D.C. power supply (100MA) or the form C relay outputs (5A/240VAC resistive). WARNING Hazardous voltages are present within the enclosure. 10 10 PROGRAMMING AND SETUP The Myriad RTU uses plain English menu driven screens for programming setup. After power up the default Main Menu screen will be visible. This screen shows the value of analog input #1 on the local RTU. Process Value of Local RTU Analog Input #1 CPU Status Default Relay Status Engineering Units Fig. 1 Vertical Bar Graph Process Readout Fig. 1 By pressing the buttons the user may view the status of the other 3 analog input unit as follows: LOCAL UNIT ANALOG INPUTS 2,3,4 From the local default screen use the buttons to move to this screen: Shows Value in Percentage of Local Units Analog Input 2,3 & 4 DI Status Indicates that Viewed Data is from the Local Unit This screen provides a way to view the analog and digital inputs of the local unit. If a DI is on it will appear on the screen and will be identified by it s number. After returning to the Main local screen push the enter button to move to the password screen. Enter user selected password (factory default is zero) with the up and down keys, then with arrow buttons, move cursor to next. Press enter to access menu 1. NOTE: Selecting VIEW with the buttons and then pressing ENTER will allow the user to step through all RTU settings without having the ability to change any parameter. Parameter changes may only be carried out after entering the user selected password as described above.

11 11 REMOTE UNIT STATUS SCREENS To view the status of the Remote unit from the Local unit use the button, while the local default screen is displayed. This will allow selection and viewing as follows: REMOTE DEFAULT SCREEN Value of Remote Unit Analog Input #1 Use to step to: REMOTE UNIT ANALOG INPUTS Shows Status of Remote Units Relay Outputs 1 & 2 Antenna Symbol Flashes When Receiving Data from Remote Shows the Value in % of the Remote Unit Analog Inputs 2, 3, 4 Shows Status of Remote Unit Digital Inputs Indicates that Values are at the Remote This screen shows the analog input values (in percentage) of the remote unit and the status of the digital inputs. If no DI s are indicated then they are not active ( ON ). MENU 1 SCALE Press enter at the Password Screen to access Menu 1 INPUT RANGE SELECTION With the SCALE selection highlighted by the cursor, press ENTER to access the input scale menu.

12 12 Use the Up/Down arrow buttons to select the desired analog input range. NOTE: INPUT TYPE MUST BE CO-ORDINATED WITH INPUT SELECTOR SWITCH LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE CIRCUIT BOARD (See Appendix A ). NOTE: If the application is linear between minimum input signal and maximum input signal, i.e. 2 point, then scroll the cursor to NEXT and press ENTER to continue the scaling process. Note on non linear inputs The Myriad RTU offers a 20 point linearizer which allows the user to customize the indicated display for 20 points of input signal. This feature is often used to read volume in a non-linear vessel such as a horizontal tank with domed end caps. a strapping table must be created to allow the display to be linear with the resultant non-linear input signal. If the user required a non-linear display, scroll the cursor to # OF POINTS and use the arrows to select the number of calibration points required, then select NEXT and press ENTER to continue. DECIMAL POINT SELECTOR SCREEN The cursor will be positioned over the decimal count window, use the Up/Down arrow buttons to raise or lower the unit number to the left of the decimal point. (The example shown in this window will change with your selection.) Use the buttons to move the cursor to the number behind the decimal point and the Up/Down buttons to change this selection. Once again the example will change to confirm your selection. Use the buttons to highlight the NEXT selection and press ENTER to access the Input Scale Screen. INPUT SCALING TO ENGINEERING UNITS NOTE: This screen sets what the Myriad RTU displays in its default screen for input 1. The example shown above will display 0.0 units when the input is 4.00 MA. Both the input and the display at that input can be changed for different requirements. A) With the cursor selecting INPUT = 4.00 use the buttons to change the input value for the required displayed value.

13 13 B) Use the buttons to move the cursor to the display value and the buttons to change the desired display for the previously selected input. Once complete, scroll to SAVE, press ENTER to access INPUT SCALE 2 screen. Follow the steps outlined above to set the values of input and display for input Scale 2. When complete with scale 2, scroll the cursor to the DONE position and press ENTER to move to the ENGINEERING UNITS selection screen. ENGINEERING UNITS SELECTION: When Scale Menu is complete the INPUT TEXT menu is the last menu in the scaling process. This screen allows the selection of several engineering units. With the cursor on the default value as shown, press the buttons to select between FEET OF WATER PSI GALLONS LITERS UNITS Use the keys to select the desired engineering units then with the keys, highlight NEXT and press ENTER to access the display filter screen. DISPLAY FILTER SCREEN When the process is noisy or changing rapidly, a digital filter is provided to slow the display screen from changing rapidly.

14 14 Use the keys to change the amount of filtering applied to the input signal. O is no filter and 10 is high filter. Once the selection is made select NEXT and press ENTER to return to Menu 1. The scaling process is now complete. MENU 1 ANALOG OUTPUT PROGRAMMING From Menu 1 select AOUT by highlighting with the cursor as previously described. Once selected press ENTER to access the analog output configuration screen. Using the buttons as described previously, select and adjust the values required for the analog output. Both the output value and the display value for that output can be selected. When complete, select NEXT and press ENTER. This will bring up the scaling window for analog output Point 2 which is set as before. When complete, scroll to DONE and press ENTER to return to Menu 1. Analog output #2 is a retransmitted signal and is fixed to the scaling of the analog input. MENU 1 SETPOINTS DIGITAL OUTPUT PROGRAMMING The Myriad RTU has 4 5A SPDT Relay outputs which can be configured to SET (turn on) and RESET (turn off) at a user defined value of the input. From Menu 1 select OUTPUTS and press ENTER.

15 15 Using the buttons scroll to the value at which the output SETS or turns on, with this value highlighted, use the Up/Down buttons to enter a value of input to activate the output. Scroll down to the RESET point and again change this value to input value which will turn the digital OUTPUT 1 off. NOTE: The internal HORN will sound when the output setpoint is reached. To prevent the horn from sounding, highlight the Y symbol adjacent to the horn symbol and use the Up/Down buttons to change the value to N (NO). This will prevent the horn from sounding when the setpoint is reached. Once all values are selected, scroll to NEXT press ENTER to move to the #2 setpoint screen and proceed as described above. When all setpoints are configured, scroll to EXIT and press ENTER to return to the Main Menu. A second programming menu can be accessed from MENU 1 by selecting NEXT and pressing ENTER. This moves the user to MENU 2. MENU 2 PEAKS The PEAKS feature of the Myriad RTU records the highest and lowest process values of local analog input #1 that have occurred since the last CLR function. With the cursor highlighting PEAKS press the ENTER button to review the PEAK & VALLEY (highest and lowest) values that the Myriad RTU has seen since last reset. MENU 2 SCADA Menu 2 contains a menu item called SCADA. This screen permits adjustment of the parameters affecting communications and general RTU system setup. Use the buttons to highlight the SCADA menu item and press enter. The first parameter is: REMOTE DEC POINT This screen permits a local operator to setup the main screen on the Remote RTU. Setup is identical to that for the local unit (see page 9). Scroll to next and press enter to access the:

16 16 REMOTE DISPLAY ENGINEERING UNIT Same as main local screen, see example on Page 10. Scroll to next and press enter to access the: ANALOG OUTPUT 1 SOURCE A local unit analog output #1 can be driven from the local units analog input #1 or the remote units analog input #1. With the item highlighted use the buttons to toggle to the desired setup. Select next and then enter to advance to: COMMFAIL OUTPUT If this item is selected to be ON then the local unit solid state output #4 will activate in the case of a communication failure (see introduction). This output will energize if the communication fail counter exceeds it s programmed limit. Use the buttons to toggle this value between ON and OFF. If Off is selected then the local units number 4 solid state output will follow the state of the remote unit s number 4 digital input. Select next and press enter to advance to: SCADA SETTING POLL RATE The factory default poll rate is 60. This setting causes the local RTU to poll the remote RTU once every 60 seconds. This is a safety setting. Data is always updated immediately whenever a process value or status changes. Scroll to next and press enter to access the:

17 17 SCADA SETTING FAIL LIMIT If the local unit does not detect new data from the remote unit for the duration of the poll rate (previous setting) this will be considered a fault. If this happens more than the number of times defined in the fail limit window (default 3) the commfail output will energize. ONLY WITH COMMFAIL OUTPUT SELECTED TO BE ON. Scroll to next and press enter to access: SCADA SETTINGS NODE NUMBER Either the local RTU or the remote can be node number 1 but the opposite unit must be set to 2 for communication to occur. NOTE: Holding the key and the key at power up sets a unit to NODE 2. NODE 1 is factory default. Select next and press enter to advance to: SCADA SETTINGS CHANGE PASSWORD All access to the programmable functions are password protected. To change the unit s access password, use the Up/Down buttons and enter a new numerical password. CAUTION: ENSURE THAT A RECORD IS KEPT OF THE PROGRAMMED PASSWORD. ACCESS IS RESTRICTED TO ALL PROGRAMMABLE PARAMETERS WITHOUT THE CORRECT PASSWORD. Scroll to exit and press enter to return to the main screen.

18 18 MENU 2 DIAGNOSTICS Receiving Information from Remote Comm Fail Counter Unit Software Version Transmitting Information to Remote Transmit Buffer is Full This screen will provide useful information regarding the operation of the RTU system. The AI and AO location shows the RAW analog input and output values on this RTU. 400 is approximately 4MA and 2000 is approximately 4.0MA. The IN location shows the status of digital inputs on this RTU. In the example DI #2 and 4 are ON. The OUT location shows the status of the 4 relay outputs. In the example relays 1 and 3 are on. The variables relating to communications are highlighted on the diagram. Press enter to return to the main screen.

19 19 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLE SHOOTING MAINTENANCE: The Myriad RTU a digital solid state device which requires no periodic maintenance. Occasional physical checks of the unit should be carried out for physical and mechanical security of mounting, terminal blocks, and electrical wiring. TROUBLE SHOOTING: UNIT LOCKS UP Recycle power to the unit by removing AC power, waiting 10 seconds and reconnecting power. WARNING NOTE: This. should be done by using the user provided circuit breaker or fuse, not by removing the power wires at the terminal block. Serious injury or death can occur if contact is made with the incoming ac power. LCD display goes dim or contrast is poor. Remove power from the unit, release the 2 rear mounting screws and slide the unit forward in it s case approximately 1 inch. On the left side of the circuit board is an adjustable potentiometer. With a small screwdriver adjust this pot to allow alter the contrast to the desired amount. Return the unit to its normal position and secure the rear screws. DISPLAY REMAINS AT ZERO OR SHOWS NO CHANGE -- If the display remains at zero or shows no change but the process is changing, check for D.C. voltage on the loop. With 2 wire (4/20MA) instruments check with a D.C. voltmeter at the level instrument, by disconnecting the level instrument from its terminals (AI1, AIC) and measuring across these terminals with a D.C. voltmeter for the presence of 24VDC. If D.C. voltage is present, reconnect the negative wire of the supply and insert a milliamp meter between the positive wires. The loop should provide a signal between 4 and 20 MA. If no current is present or the current exceeds 20MA consult the level instrument supplier. If D.C. voltage is not present check the user supplied power supply or if using the Myriad supply measure across terminals 24VDC and AIC. If no 24VDC is present consult factory. If 24VDC is present check field wiring between the Myriad and the field device and recheck SCALE functions to ensure correct setup.

20 20 APPENDIX A SWITCH SELECTION OF ANALOG INPUT RANGES (Factory default 4/20MA). The range dip switches are located on the bottom of the main circuit board. Disconnect power, remove two rear screws, remove terminal strips and slide the entire unit out of its case. Turn the unit upside down to locate the range dip switches. Sigma reserves the right to repair or replace at its option any product found to be defective. In no event shall Sigma Controls, Inc. be liable for any consequential, incidental, or special damages and the limit of its liability shall not exceed the purchase price of the supplied equipment. RETURN FOR REPAIR POLICY (WARRANTY/NON-WARRANTY REPAIR) Return status can be determined upon factory inspection of returned equipment. A completed Return Authorization form must accompany all items returned for repair. Repairs will be evaluated as quickly as possible.
