In contrast to the PC and consumer market, the products are exposed to critical environmental conditions, are designed for longer life cycles, and therefore must be highly reliable. Swissbit s industrial Solid State Drive (SSD) family covers all relevant interfaces, including CFAST Serial Flash (CFAST), CompactFlash (CF), Secure Digital (SD), IDE / Parallel ATA (PATA), Serial ATA (SATA) and Universal Serial Bus (USB), in combination with state of the art flash handling utilizing the qualities of single level cell (SLC) NAND flash. Product Reliability Product development according to stringent design rules, critical component control, and extensive product qualification procedures, ensure overall electrical and mechanical robustness of Swissbit s Flash product line. All products are offered in commercial (0 C to +70 C) and industrial (-40 C to +85 C) temperature ranges. Only high reliable SLC NAND flash is used and our flash handling provides features like built-in error correction, bad block management, static and dynamic wear leveling, and power loss data protection. For our latest product revisions we offer product lifetime calculations for special use cases. We enable our customers to access bad block counts and the status of write/erase cycles in order to monitor wear leveling. 3 INDUSTRIAL CFAST FLASH STORAGE CARD The CFast card combines the original CompactFlash (CF) card form factor with a Serial ATA (sata) interface. With this melding of two industry standards, the CFast card specification was created that allows for new applications in the embedded and industrial markets. Often in these markets - performance, speed, system downtime, and flexibility are important design considerations. CFast addresses these considerations and more while maintaining a small package size and providing high-speed data transfer. The use of the sata interface on CFast cards allows for a vast improvement over slower parallel data transfer methods by offering a bandwidth up to 300MB/s. For engineers and designers CFast offers the small size, flexibility, and features of a CF card while providing the simplicity and speed of a sata communication interface. The CFast card can be operated using a single 3.3V (+/-5%) low power source and supports three sata power management states: Active, Partial, and Slumber. The CFast is a perfect choice for both fixed and removable applications where low to medium storage densities are required and the physical size of conventional mechanical or solid state hard drives are impractical. The migration effort to CFast is further simplified because it electrically complies with the Serial ATA International Organization standard and utilizes the same sata command set. 4 INDUSTRIAL COMPACT FLASH CARD, TYPE I CompactFlash (CF) cards are storage devices designed around NAND flash technology. CF cards provide a small, non-volatile mass storage solution which contain no moving parts. Swissbit CF cards are designed, manufactured, and tested to function in demanding conditions or harsh environments. The use of Single Level Cell (SLC) NAND Flash and state-of-the-art flash handling algorithms ensure solid data reliability in terms of endurance and retention. 5 SECURE DIGITAL MEMORY CARD Swissbit s Industrial Grade Secure Digital (SD) cards are specifically designed, manufactured, and tested to withstand extreme environmental conditions. The use of signal level cell flash combined with a 32bit RISC controller provides a number of enhanced product features such as built-in error correction, bad block management, advanced wear leveling algorithms, power loss protection, and power saving modes. Special attention is dedicated to the mechanical stability and enhanced ESD protection. A reliable ABC/PC housing, with special connector support, provides resistance against bending and torque. Furthermore, the gold plated connectors will last a minimum of 10,000 insertions. As an optional feature, Swissbit SD cards have an internal write protect as well as a read lock/unlock feature that is in compliance with the latest SD specifications. Additionally, these cards support the CPRM protocol to protect the copyrighted data recorded on the SD card from unauthorized use. 6 IDE / PARALLEL ATA (pata) SSD Solid State Drives (SSD) are drop-in replacements for traditional 2.5 hard disk drives (HDD). Swissbit offers the Parallel ATA (PATA) interface SSD with 44-pin IDE connector with up to 32GB of flash memory. Also available is the Serial ATA (SATA) interface SSD with SATA connector. 9 FLASH gives a new meaning to the word - Memory Flash memory based devices are in the process of changing our lives. These non-volatile solid state memory systems are rapidly replacing more fragile and less tolerant media. Today, for most people the headaches of storing pictures on sensitive film or worrying about a CD skipping while exercising are in the past. There are even more changes lead by Flash based devices, such as direct solid state replacements for mechanical data storage hard drives. Solid state storage offers many advantages over older electromechanical systems by being faster, more power efficient, more rugged and more easily integrated together with other components in system designs and production flows. Tremendous technology advances have decreased manufacturing costs and reduced prices significantly. Requirements for highly reliable Flash memory storage systems continue to grow, especially those used in Industrial, Embedded, Communications & Networking, Military & Aerospace, Automotive, Casino Gaming, and Medical Equipment products. Often these operating environments are more demanding than seen by removable consumer grade Flash devices. Users of high reliability Flash products want additional tools to ensure and monitor they are getting the maximum performance while safe guarding critical data: Good mechanism to detect and correct errors inherent to Flash memories Efficient algorithms to maximize lifetime Tools to predict lifetime or monitor systems status and health Ability to implement customer-specific features Along with developing rugged and reliable data storage systems, Flash based devices have helped to create a new vocabulary as seen below: Data Retention While a cell s quality over time is mainly dependent on the number of write/erase cycles, the quality of a cell s voltage level or the data retention might also deteriorate over time. Often Flash data sheets specify data retention in the area of 10 years, while real-life data retention might be subject to all kinds of intrinsic factors such as heat, magnetism, traffic on neighboring cells and more. On the positive side, remapping or wear leveling might improve the data retention, as data is actually moving across physical blocks and the last time a bit is physically written differs from the last time it was logically written. Error Code Correction (ECC) The ECC is generally responsible for ensuring the quality of data being read, by adding information during the writing phase to restore partially corrupted data. ECC algorithms encode a larger data array based on certain assumptions or criteria in order to detect and repair errors. To get into the logic, one could start with a simple error detection method such as a parity bit, check sum or cyclic redundancy check (CRC). A check sum is as simple as adding all bits and comparing results. This is an easy and efficient method in terms of data overhead for error detection but doesn t help to repair data. Therefore more complex encoding is needed. So called syndromes contain more information that not only detect but can also help to restore data. Encoding additional information requires more overhead and calculation power. Wear Leveling The wear leveling algorithms do use balancing of all blocks, thus guarantying maximum lifetime of products. Furthermore, algorithms relating to and integrated in the wear leveling can help to avoid capacitive or parasitic-coupling, floating-gate-to-floating-gate noise, electron contamination and such by optimizing the spread of cells being addressed. The load of each block is balanced throughout all blocks on a Flash memory chip. By trying to ensure that as few blocks as possible reach their end-of-life before others, and together with defining an adequate size of the spare block pool, the products life can be maximized and data integrity be ensured. Swissbit can provide vendor specific commands, allowing the retrieval of information from the Flash device relating to life time features. Using these commands, system developers can read usage statistics. This information combined with defined thresholds can serve as an endurance status indicator like S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology). Power Loss Data Protection Flash memory is often used in removable storage applications or battery operated devices where a robust and reliable power source cannot be guaranteed. A user may remove the memory at any time and under these conditions security of data is of paramount importance. Swissbit uses a concept in order to ensure data integrity when transferring or writing data. By using certain buffer blocks, information is written in a way that minimizes the delta between an old and a new state. The data system is coherent at all times. Should power loss happen at the very same time when data is written to the Flash, this data might get lost. In no case, however, will the overall data system be corrupted. Swissbit performs extensive power cycling tests to all products verifying no data corruption due to power failure.
