A CAUTION indicates a hazard and calls attention to a procedure that if not correctly followed could result in damage to the instrument. Do not proceed beyond a caution indicator without understanding the hazard. A WARNING indicates a hazard to you and calls attention to a procedure that if no correctly followed could result in injury or even death. Do not proceed beyond a warning without understanding the hazard. 2. Setting Up 2.1. Unpacking When you unpack the GT-331 and accessories, inspect the carton for obvious damage. If the carton is damaged notify the carrier. Unpack everything and make a visual inspection. You should have the following: GT-331 Aerosol Mass Monitor Serial interface cable Isokinetic probe with a short piece of tubing Universal AC to DC converter module with AC power cord Miniature screwdriver GT-331 operation manual GT-331 calibration data sheet Sensor calibration data sheet AirPlus software If any of the above components is missing contact your supplier. Keep the carton and packing material for reuse.

2.2. Familiarization Isokinetic Filter Power Switch Charging Jack Display Adjust Flow Adjust Serial Port Item Power Switch Charging Jack Isokinetic Filter Display Adjust Flow Adjust Serial Port Description Used to turn ON and OFF power to the unit. Plug Universal AC to DC converter module into the jack to charge the batteries. Used to reduce count errors due to sample flow velocity. Used to adjust the LCD display contrast. Used to adjust the flow rate of the unit. Used to communicate with the AirPlus software.

2.3. Test Run The battery pack inside the GT-331 was charged at the factory and the instrument should be ready to use. Turn the power switch located on the left side of the GT-331 on. The LCD display on the GT-331 should come on and indicate PRESS START. If there is no display or a dim display then one of two items may be wrong: 1) the LCD contrast needs adjusting or 2) the battery needs charging and you should refer to the maintenance chapter of this manual that covers charging the battery. Change the LCD contrast by rotating the adjustment with the screwdriver provided (See section 2.2 Familiarization). We will now do a test run by taking an aerosol sample with the GT-331. Remove the rubber cap from the GT-331 inlet nozzle. The inlet nozzle protrudes from a hole in the top of the GT-331 case. Turn on the GT-331 power switch. Press the <SELECT> key several times and note that the display sequences through the range settings of PM1, PM2.5, PM7, PM10, and TSP. Leave the range set to PM10. Set the GT-331 down on a flat surface with the inlet nozzle pointing upward. Press the <START> key. You should hear the internal vacuum pump start running. After 4 minutes, a number will appear on the display representing the mass concentration of the sample aerosol just taken. If the sample was taken in a relatively clean area the sample reading may be only a few micrograms. A dusty area may read as high as several hundred micrograms. Always remember to turn the power off after each sample to conserve battery power. The GT-331 is now checked out and ready for use, however you should read the rest of this manual to better understand how to use and maintain this instrument.

3. GT-331 Overview 3.1. Description The GT-331 is designed to be a small, easy to use and completely portable hand held aerosol dust monitor that can provide fast measurements of aerosol quality over the industry standard particle size ranges represented by PM1, PM2.5, PM7, PM10, and TSP. The GT-331 measurements can compare quite favorably with expensive reference methods like gravimetric, beta gauge and TEOM. The GT-331 contains a laser diode based sensor, NiCd battery pack, vacuum pump, isokinetic probe, microprocessor electronics, computer interface and LCD display all in one small package. The GT-331 provides a fast indication of particulate mass concentration per cubic meter of sampled air for the most commonly tested size fractions of PM1, PM2.5, PM7, PM10, and TSP. When used in the manual mode the GT-331 is easy to use. The user inter-face consists of just a power switch and a keypad with two selections, <START/STOP> and a range <SELECT> key. Pushing the <START/STOP> key initiates a 4-minute aerosol sample. When the sample is done, the GT-331 uses the stored particle count data from several different particle size ranges and a proprietary algorithm to derive the mass concentration for that aerosol sample. When used in the remote mode the GT-331 incorporates an RS232 port for connection to a computer. This powerful feature allows remote control of the GT-331 for continuous data acquisition. Traditionally, DRI (direct reading instruments) used for measuring aerosol mass concentrations of particulate matter have been integrating nephelometers. This type of instrument is inexpensive to manufacture but suffers from inaccuracy due to its inability to sense the particle size distribution of the sampled aerosol. A nephelometer DRI applies a typical particle size distribution; usually log normal, to derive mass concen-tration. Any aerosol sampled by a nephelometer differing from the typical will result in an error. The GT-331 however, is a real particle counter; the particle size distribution of the aerosol sample is measured. A patent pending algorithm converts particle counts and size data to equivalent mass concentration Applications Process control monitoring in sawmills, grain elevators, quarries etc. Mines and ore processing plants Indoor and outdoor air quality studies Finding leaks and sources of contamination air ducts and filtration systems Concerned citizen groups that want to do their own air quality studies Hospitals and nursing homes Test the efficiency of residential air purifiers and vacuum cleaners Check filters for particle leaks Event monitoring, fenceline monitoring Epidemiological studies Reentrainment studies

3.3. Special Calibration The sensor in the GT-331 has been calibrated at the factory using PSL (polystyrene latex) calibration particles. PSL particles are presently the most accurate method for calibrating particle counters. Performing an accurate calibration results in uniformity in particle counting performance from sensor to sensor. The particle count data taken by a GT-331 is converted to an equivalent mass concentration by a special algorithm. The particle size distribution data allows the GT-331 to provide accurate mass measurement of most aerosols with different particle size distributions. The algorithm has been adjusted to ARD (Arizona road dust) because ADR has a particle size distribution similar to most real world aerosols. The mass concentration reading of the GT-331 has been checked against a BAM (beta attenuation monitor). A BAM is a reference standard method of measuring mass concentration. If the aerosol to be sampled has a particle size distribution, or any other characteristics that are significantly different from a typical aerosol, there will be an error in the GT-331 mass measurement. This error can be compensated for. The algorithm the GT-331 uses to derive mass concentration incorporate 5 particle size related variables (p1, p2, p3, p4, and p5) that help to compensate for particle size distribution differences in sampled aerosols. The algorithm also incorporates a variable (k) affecting all particle sizes. The factory set default values for these variables can be changed to calibrate the GT-331 for an aerosol greatly different from typical aerosols. The factory settings are the reference or baseline representing a typical aerosol. Always return to the factory settings after a special calibration. The variables are accessed and changed using a computer connected to the serial port. See the chapter on remote operation for information on the serial port and changing variables Special Calibration Variables k p1 p2 p3 p4 p5 Overall Multiplier 0 to 1 micron size range multiplier 1 to 2.5 micron size range multiplier 2.5 to 7 micron size range multiplier 7 to 10 micron size range multiplier >10 micron size range multiplier Keep a logbook of all special calibrations. The factory settings for the variables are the baseline and if a variable is changed for a special calibration, note the offset of the changed variable from the factory value in the logbook. The information in the logbook can be used to quickly calibrate GT-331 to sample a new aerosol by setting the variables for the new aerosol to the ones used to calibrate an aerosol in the logbook having similar characteristics.

4. Manual Operation 4.1. Isokinetic Sampling The GT-331 comes with an isokinetic probe that attaches to its inlet nozzle with the short piece of Tygon tubing provided. Attach the other end of the tubing to the GT-331 inlet nozzle (See section 2.2 Familiarization). The isokinetic probe helps reduce count errors related to the sample flow velocity and the aerodynamics of small particles. The isokinetic probe should be used for most sampling applications. When taking a sample of typical indoor or outdoor aerosols the opening of the isokinetic probe should always face upward. The GT-331 can be held in your hand or placed on a flat surface with its display facing towards you. When sampling in an area having constant airflow, such as a duct, vent or the downstream side of a filter, always face the opening of the isokinetic probe into the air movement. The length of the connecting tubing going from the inlet on the GT-331 to the isokinetic probe can be increased if necessary but count losses, especially for larger particles, will become a problem after approximately a four-foot length. Try to keep the tubing length short. The sampling height will affect the GT-331 mass concentration reading. Taking a sample near the floor can give results several times higher than a sample taken at eye level. Be aware that some contamination problems are the result of short-term events or bursts from a source having a high concentration of particles. A sudden increase in foot traffic can cause a 15-minute spike with mass concentration readings 10 times higher than the background level. Fast events can be missed when doing a fast survey. It may be necessary to connect the GT-331 to a computer and log data over 24 hours to detect a fast contamination event Taking a Sample CAUTION Never sample smoke, paint spray, oil mist, reactive, or pressurized gasses to avoid damaging the sensor optics. Remove the rubber cap from the GT-331 aerosol inlet nozzle and attach the Isokinetic probe. Turn the GT-331 power switch on. Press the <START> key and you will hear the internal vacuum pump start running. The sample will take 4 minutes. After 4 minutes the pump will stop and the display will show a number representing the concentration in micrograms per cubic meter. Now, press the <SELECT> key and sequence to the PM particle size range of interest. The values displayed on the LCD show only the particles smaller than the PM size selected. For example, a range setting of PM7 applies to particles smaller than 7 micron and rejects particles larger than 7 micron. The display will hold the result until the <START> key is pressed again to initiate another sample. The <STOP> key is used to stop the sample at any time. Any data accumulated is lost when the <STOP> key is pressed.

5. Remote Operation 5.1. Connecting the Serial Port The GT-331 can be remotely controlled and its data downloaded using a serial (RS-232) connection to a computer. A special serial cable is provided with the GT-331. Data is exchanged over a simple three-wire null modem configuration. GT-331 data is in a comma delimited ASCII text file format. Connect the end of the serial cable with the 6-pin plug into the round 6-pin connector on the bottom of the GT-331. 16 6. Maintenance 6.1. Service Schedule WARNING: There are no user serviceable components inside this instrument. The covers on this instrument should not be removed or opened for servicing, calibration or any other purpose except by a factory authorized person. To do so may result in exposure to invisible laser radiation that can cause blindness. Sensor, vacuum pump and filter replacement requires access to the inside of the GT-331 and this must be done by a factory-authorized person. Contact Met One Instruments for service information. Calibrating particle sensors like the one in the GT-331 requires specialized equipment and a skilled technician. Met One Instruments, Inc. maintains a calibration facility for calibrating particle counters according to industry accepted methods like ASTM and JIS using NIST traceable standards. The sensor in the GT-331 should be calibrated on a yearly basis Service Schedule Table Item To Service Frequency Done By Zero test Weekly Customer or Factory Service Flowrate test Monthly Customer or Factory Service Replace internal filter Yearly Factory service only Replace pump Yearly Factory service only Replace battery pack Yearly Factory service only Calibrate Sensor Yearly Factory service only

6.3. Battery Pack CAUTION: There are no user serviceable components inside the GT-331. Do not attempt to change the internal battery pack. The wrong battery pack could cause serious damage or a fire. The GT-331 should be sent to a service center where a factory qualified person would change and properly dispose of the battery pack. There is no way to measure the battery pack condition or capacity directly on the GT-331. When the battery is low enough to need charging, the pump will not turn on when the <START> key is pushed. To charge the battery pack, connect the AC power cord from the AC to DC converter module to an AC power outlet. The module is universal and will work with power line voltages of 100 to 240 volts, 50 to 60 Hz. Take the plug on the end of the cord coming from the converter module and plug it into the charger input socket on the side of the GT- 331 just below the power switch. To fully charge a discharged battery pack may take up to 15 hours. The battery pack inside the GT-331 when fully charged will power the GT-331 for about five hours of continuous use. Under normal intermittent or manual operation however, there is considerably less battery drain and up to 10 hours of use is possible. GT-331 is to be used powered by its battery pack on a daily basis, connect the charger after each day of usage. It will not damage the battery pack to leave it connected to the charger for long periods. Unit can not run continuously from the charger, it must have a battery to operate. When the GT-331 is always used in an area where AC power is available. Leave the charger connected to the GT-331. If the GT-331 is to be stored charge the battery pack. Storing a discharged NiCd battery for any length of time will degrade its performance Zero Test False counts caused by air leaks or spurious noise will cause errors, especially when sampling relatively clean aerosols. A zero count test is easy to do. Attach an optional zero test filter (Met One Part Number ) to the GT-331 inlet nozzle. The zero filter removes 99.99% of all particles larger than.3 micron. The zero filter must be large enough that it does not create a restriction and load down the small vacuum pump inside the GT-331. Since the air passing through the GT-331 is now virtually particle free, the output should be zero. Select the PM1 range on the GT-331 and take a sample. The result of the 4-minute sample should be zero micrograms. If it does no read zero it is probably due to a leak in the flow path inside the GT-331 or the zero filter is bad. If it is determined that there is a leak, the GT-331 must be sent back to the factory for repair.

6.5. Flow Rate Test The sample flowrate of.1-cfm is set at the factory. However, wear from continued use will degrade the motor and vacuum pump. Variation in the flowrate will reduce the accuracy of the instrument. Testing the flowrate is an easy procedure but it requires a flowmeter that is ±3% accurate at.1-cfm. The flowmeter must be non-loading. The tiny vacuum pump inside the GT-331 can be easily loaded down by even a small restriction. Most hot wire and differential pressure types of flowmeters are non-loading. To test the flowrate, connect the flowmeter to the sample inlet nozzle of the GT-331 using a short piece of flexible 1/8 (3 mm) ID tubing, Tygon tubing is a good choice. Turn on the GT-331 and note the flowmeter reading. The flowrate should be.1-cfm ±5%. The flowrate can be adjusted by a trimpot located in one of the two access holes in the bottom of the GT-331 case (See section 2.2 Familiarization). Use the small screwdriver that came with the GT-331 to make the adjustment. Turn the adjustment pot CW to increase the flow and CCW to decrease the flow Display Contrast Adjust A characteristic of an LCD display is that their contrast is affected by temperature. Use the small screwdriver provided to make the adjustment. The location of the Display Adjustment is shown in section 2.2 Familiarization. Turn the adjustment pot to the desired contrast.

7. Troubleshooting WARNING: There are no user serviceable components inside this instrument. The covers on this instrument should not be removed or opened for servicing, calibration or any other purpose except by a factory authorized person. 22 9.4. Overview Terminal Folder The Terminal Folder displays automatic data collection until the operator presses STOP from the GT-331 unit. Various information is shown on this screen such as PM size, counts and the parameters set by the operator. Figure 1 shows a diagram of the Terminal Screen. Figure 1: Terminal Screen

There are 6 large icons located in every folder. These are: The START/STOP button will begin of the data collection process. Pressing the START button from the GT-331 will also initiate data collection. One thing to keep in mind is that once the START button is pressed, it will automatically try to connect and the START button will change to STOP. This is just to inform the operator that data collection is in process and that in order to discontinue this, STOP should be pressed. The GT-331 firmware has limited handshaking capabilities and for this reason, it is necessary for the operator to STOP the data collection process by pressing STOP from the GT-331 handheld unit. NOTE: Pressing STOP from the AirPlus for GT-331 software program will NOT allow the operator to discontinue operations. It is MANDATORY that STOP on the GT-331 unit be pressed to halt information transfer. The OPEN FILE icon allows the operator to open an existing file and view its contents. The PRINT icon allows the operator to print the data shown on the screen. The printer setup option is under the File heading. This will allow you to adjust the printer settings, paper size, and orientation. NOTE: There is no Print icon located on the Terminal Screen. This is not necessary because data collection can be printed from the Record Screen. The PARAMETERS icon allows the operator to change values assigned to the K and the various PM sizes. Default is set as follows: Constant K = Constant P1 = Constant P2 = Constant P3 = Constant P4 = Constant P5 = Duration for Polling (minutes) = 5 NOTE: The AirPlus for GT-331 software program will allow you to change parameter values while data collection is in progress. New parameter values, however, will take effect at the beginning of the new cycle. The COM Port icon allows the operator to select which COM Port they will allot for data collection. If the wrong COM Port is selected, the message below will be displayed. GT 331 Data Error Cannot retrieve parameters from GT 331 Record process STOP

At this point, the operator should select another COM Port to establish communication. The SAVE FILE icon allows the operator to save the data collected onto a xxx.331 file to be viewed again at a later time. The EXIT icon simply allows the operator to exit the AirPlus for GT-331 software program. It also prompts the operator to save the data into an xxx.331 file. Failure to provide a file name will result in data wipeout. What this means is that you have completely lost your file and it is unable to be recovered. Finally, it is also important to familiarize yourself with the various other features in the AirPlus for GT-331 software program. The File, Setup and About headings allow the operator to initiate New Files, Setup printer, and display information pertaining to the AirPlus for GT-331 software.

Record Folder The Record Folder displays the output of the collected data in an easy to read format. Initially it displays all of the parameter values, polling duration, and Date/Time of the first data collection. In addition, the Particle Mass (PM) is presented in a condensed format. For accurate reporting, it also displays the PM data out three decimal places. Figure 2 shows a diagram of the Record screen. Figure 2: Record Screen

Chart Folder The Chart Folder displays a graph of PM concentration (ìg/cm 3 ) over five-minute cycles. Figure 3 displays the Chart screen. Figure 3: Chart Screen The great feature about this is that it does not require you to import your data into a separate Excel file for graphing; instead it allows you to work directly from the AirPlus for GT-331 software program. There exist four small icons in the Chart folder. These are: The Graph icon will allow the operator to manipulate graphing formats, as they would allow from Excel. The Text icon allows the operator to change the various titles, legend information, and fonts. The default setting for the Text icon is set as follows: Top Title: <Name of the File> Left Title: ìg/cm 3 Bottom Title: Time Interval: 5 minute(s) Right Title: <None> The Print icon allows the operator to print the graph that is shown in the chart folder.

The Capture icon allows the operator to copy the graph to a clipboard as a bitmap. In addition to these features, the Chart folder also allows the operator to manipulate the various coordinates of the line of reference, Y-axis, line size (thickness), X-Gap, and colors of the reference line as well as the various PM sizes, which is located on the bottom of the screen To Begin Data Collection Before you begin the data collection process, make sure that the RS-232 communications cable (P/N 8555) is securely fastened to your PC and the GT-331. This is absolutely necessary in order to establish communications and initiate data collection properly. Follow these simple and easy to follow, step-by-step instructions to begin collecting data into a new file: Choose the COM Port from which data transfer will initiate. Edit Parameters (if necessary). Press Start either from the GT-331 handheld unit or from the AirPlus for GT-331 software program. Data collection will begin immediately. Data collection occurs in 5-minute cycles. If you press STOP from your GT-331 unit then pressing START will reset to the beginning of the cycle. If STOP not pressed then the cycle will continuously repeat until STOP is initiated. NOTE: Remember that the firmware on the GT-331 does not have the ability to send a disable signal to the AirPlus for GT-331 software. For this reason, it is imperative STOP be pressed from the GT-331 unit for data collection to be halted.
