2 Introduction The MFL tool is a computerised MFL system designed to detect, size and map corrosion on storage tank floors. The battery powered, motorised scanner is complimented by powerful, yet easy to use dedicated software packages that work seamlessly to enhance efficiency and simplify the data collection and reporting workflow. It delivers significant improvements in terms of defect positioning, electronic data processing and software manipulation. The off-line reporting software package produces a comprehensive yet easy to read report and provides several useful tools to assist with post inspection decision making. 3 How it works: The SA International tool utilises the latest generation rare earth magnet technology to maximise flux density within the plate. The scanner is driven by a powerful motor to reduce operator fatigue and improve productivity. The motor drives the scanner at a fixed speed of 450mm per second which eliminates accuracy issues associated with varying speeds seen on other scanners. The scanner is supplied with three 12Volt batteries which allows the system to be used continuously around the clock. The self contained battery operated system eliminates the need for trailing cables and an external power supply. A High Specification encoder system has been developed which is electronically calibrated to each individual scanner eliminating errors caused by component tolerances. The new encoder now gives accuracy to within 3 mm on an 8 meter track length and providing it is calibrated on an annual basis will not be effected by normal wear and tear. The ruggedised on-board computer uses touch screen technology for ease of use within the hostile storage tank environment. The custom designed data acquisition software not only captures all the MFL signals but analyses and displays the location and severity of the corrosion in real time.

4 Reporting Software: The off line reporting software automatically produces a CAD drawing of the tank floor with the corrosion represented as individual colored pixels to provide precise information on the condition of specific areas of the tank floor. Alternatively the plates can be colored according to the maximum corrosion detected on each track to provide an overview of the general condition of the tank. All captured data, over 20% loss of the nominal plate thickness, is re-analysed to identify the defect profile and separate the corrosion into 1 of 3 classes. Different sizing algorithms are applied to each class of corrosion ensuring enhanced defect sizing even on badly corroded floors where small diameter deep pits may otherwise have been undersized. Additional data from visual, ultrasonic, vacuum box and magnetic particle inspection can be added to the report generating a full fingerprint of the tank floor including the annular plates. An innovative feature of the software allows subsequent inspection data to be overlaid and corrosion growth identified. These features coupled together with a patch plate design function and full statistics package give the tank engineer a powerful, cost effective tool with which to carry out trending and asset life projections
