2 FOREWORD VM-11B For Use in Safety... Thank you for your using our VM-11B Acceleration Input Vibration Signal Conditioner. SHINKAWA Sensor Technology applies strict quality control and inspections to ensure the high reliability of its products. The VM-11 Series Conditioner Instruction Manual contains descriptive information, specifications, installation procedures and field wiring with monitor. Please study contents of this manual and related manuals thoroughly before installing or operating the equipment, and keep it handy for future reference.! CAUTION 1. If insulation resistance (Megger) test is made on the signal cable between transducer and monitor, disconnect the cable from transducer and monitor. Be sure to discharge the charged electric load before connecting the cable to the transducer and monitor. If this caution is not adhered to, the transducer and monitor could be damaged. 2. Do not measure insulation resistance and dielectric strength other than those at places specified. 3. Do not remodel this unit without permission. Otherwise the guarantee can not be made. 4. This unit is designed for use by specialists or persons thoroughly familiar with the field. 5. Make sure that the end user receives the instruction Manual delivered with this unit.! CAUTION The VM-11 series has an inrush current when power on. The inrush current value is varied depending on the situation like a timing for the power on or impedance of a power line, but normally it s value is several times or dozens of times lager than the current consumption. When the VM-11 is used in combination with a circuit protector, a delay type of circuit protector should be used. Before Use... When the unit is received, inspect it for damage suffered in transport and check whether it is the item you ordered. In the unlikely event that it was damaged in transport or does not function according to specifications, please contact the SHINKAWA Office or dealer nearest you. 4 1. GENERAL INFORMATION VM-11B This conditioner receives acceleration input vibration signals from the CA Series Acceleration Transducers installed on rotating machinery and converts the signals to an isolated signal of 4 to 20mADC (or 1 to 5VDC) proportional to the vibration value. -1-

7 4. MOUNTING METHOD VM-11B The VM-11 Series Vibration Signal Conditioner can be mounted on racks, walls or DIN rails.! CAUTION Be sure to recheck the mounting condition of the conditioner after completing installation work. The imperfect installation work may cause the damage of the conditioner by dropping. 4-1 RACK MOUNTING Use a panel (FRK-16) and install it on an angle as shown in Fig This is a convenient method for high density mounting of the conditioners on a 19-inch rack panel. 8 4. MOUNTING METHOD VM-11B 4-2 WALL MOUNTING Use the panel (FRK-16) to mount the conditioner as shown in Fig. 4.3 or directly mount it on to a wall mount bracket. MOUNTING METHOD VM-11B 4-3 DIN RAIL MOUNTING Insert a DIN rail into the upper section of the DIN rail groove on the rear of the conditioner and fix the rail with the slide lock at the lower part of the conditioner as shown in Figs. 4.5 and 4.6. 11 4. MOUNTING METHOD VM-11B 4-5 MOUNTING BLOCK INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL Insert a mounting block into the conditioner groove as shown in Fig. 4.8 and slide it until it is fixed with the stopper. To remove it, lift up the mounting block stopper with a screwdriver.! CAUTION The case of the conditioner is made of resin. It could be deformed or damaged by application of excessive force. 12 5. EXTERNAL WIRING VM-11B Wires can be connected to terminals by opening the conditioner terminal cover. It is recommended that very flexible twisted wires be used for wiring, and good and reliable round crimp-on terminals (JIS C2805) be used.! WARNING To prevent electric shock, never turn on the power until all wiring is completed.! CAUTION The conditioner shall not be located near motor or relay side. Run input and output signal cables separately from power cables. If not, the output may be affected by the noise. 5-1 CONNECTION OF TRANSDUCER The transducer output signal line (+) shall be connected to the terminal No. 7. The common line and cable shield line of the transducer shall be connected to the terminal No. 8 (COM). The following wiring shall be recommended for connection between the transducer and the signal conditioner. In case of CA input transducer : 2-wire twisted pair shielded cable with 0.52 to 0.75 mm 2 COM SIG. 2-wire twisted pair shielded cable Acceleration Transducer! CAUTION Refer to the instruction manual of transducer. In case the shielded wire is connected to the transducer case,do not connect the shielded wire to 8(COM) to avoid two point grounding

13 5. EXTERNAL WIRING VM-11B 5-2 CONNECTION OF WAVEFORM OUTPUT SIGNAL The waveform output signal (+) is output from the terminal No. 5 (+) and No. 6 (COM). Twisted (0.5 to 0.75mm 2 ) vinyl chord (VSF) as per JIS 3306 or equivalent is recommended for buffer output wiring.! CAUTION 1. The waveform output signal is not insulated against the input signal. 2. Insulate COM of the buffer output signal against ground to avoid external noise Waveform output receiving instrument

14 5. EXTERNAL WIRING VM-11B 5-3 CONNECTION OF RECORDER OUTPUT (CONDITIONER OUTPUT) SIGNAL The recorder output signal is output from the terminal No. 11 (+) and No. 12 (COM). Twisted (0.5 to 0.75mm 2 ) vinyl chord (VSF) as per JIS 3306 or equivalent is recommended for recorder output wiring Signal output Receiving instrument -11-

15 5. EXTERNAL WIRING VM-11B 5-4 CONNECTION OF POWER SUPPLY (1) AC specification Connect L (LINE) to terminal 14 and N (NEUTRAL) to terminal 15. Also connect terminal 16 to ground. (2) DC specification Connect (+) to terminal 14 and (-) to terminal 15. Also connect terminal 16 to ground. Twisted (1.25 to 2.0 mm 2 ) 600V vinyl chord (IV) as per JIS 3307 or equivalent is recommended for power supply wiring.! WARNING To prevent electric shock, never turn on the power on until all wiring is completed Power AC DC (L) (+) or (N) (-) ! WARNING Beware of electric shock from high-voltage parts. -12-

16 6. ITEMS TO BE CHECKED BEFORE TURNING THE POWER SWITCH ON VM-11B (1) Confirm that the wiring from the input transducer is correct. (2) Make sure that 85 to 264VAC or 24VDC power cable of the conditioner is connected with the correct polarities. (3) Confirm that the external wiring to the terminal board is correct. (4) Check that the mounting conditions; ambient temperature, humidity, dust and vibration are suitable (e.g. within specifications). Confirm the above items before turning on the power supply. The conditioner needs 5 minutes warmup to meet its specified accuracy levels. -13-

17 7. BURN-DOWN FUNCTION VM-11B This converter is provided with the burn-down function to indicate the converter itself is not in the measurement state. The output of the converter is set to less than -20% of F.S. (0.8mADC or 0.2VDC) when the converter is in any of the following states. (1) The input transducer is abnormal (disconnected or shorted).! CAUTION The OFF-DELAY function is activated. Note that the burn-down function continues for about 10 sec after the input signal returns to the normal state and for about 10 sec after turning the power switch on. -14-

18 8. USING RADIO EQUIPMENT VM-11B If the signal conditioner, signal cable or transducer are exposed to electromagnetic waves, the conditioner cannot maintain its specified accuracy levels. Therefore, refrain from using transceivers or portable phones in its immediate vicinity -15-

19 Warranty The warranty period for the delivered product shall be 3 years from the date of delivery from our factory. But the warranty period for the special order product and software shall be 1 year, and for the repairing parts shall be 6 months. In the event that the delivered product develops any defects within the warranty period for which Shinkawa Electric is liable, the defective part will be replaced or repaired in our factory at our own expense. In the event that an engineer needs to be dispatched for repair purposes during the warranty period, travel expenses for the said engineer will be changed in accordance with the above item. The cost of repair will be borne by Shinkawa Electric. However, the following are excluded from our warranty: (1) Any defects due to improper handling or operation by the user. (2) Any defects, the case of which is not attributable to Shinkawa Electric. (3) Any modifications or repairs made by others then Shinkawa Electric or persons commissioned by Shinkawa Electric. (4) Any handling, storage and operation under severe environmental conditions that exceed the design specifications. (5) Any defects due to fire, flood, earthquake, lightning and other Acts of God. (6) The consumables (7) Other defects considered not to be attributable to Shinkawa Electric. This warranty applies exclusively to the delivered product units. Shinkawa Electric will not be held liable for consequential damage caused either directly or indirectly through a defect of the delivered product. The warranty period and scope of machinery and equipment made by manufacturers other than Shinkawa Electric shall be in accordance with the conditions of the respective manufacturer, regardless of the provisions made above.
