1 Data Sheet Series Electric Actuators Series Electric Actuators Description Trend series actuators are used with Trend VB and SVG valves. Self stroking design minimises commissioning time and improves the response of the controller. The actuator can be used with fan coil units, induction units, small reheaters, recoolers, and zone applications in which hot/cold water is the controlled medium. The is compatible with IQ, IQL and FC ranges of controllers. Features Proportional and Raise/Lower (3 point) versions. The advanced design incorporates no-force switch-off at up position, which enables use of the actuator on valves with different nominal strokes and improves the controller response. Force switch-off at down position prevents overload of actuator or valve. No tools required for mounting. Maintenance free during the lifetime. Manual control and position indication version (/K). Adapters for use with GBX and SGIBT series valves. Proportional version has automatic stroke recalibration and exercise cycle. 2 Data Sheet INSTALLATION MECHANICAL The actuator should be mounted with the valve either horizontal, or pointing upwards. The actuator is fixed to the valve body by means of a mounting ring which requires no tools for mounting, and should be finger tight. ELECTRICAL Important: It is strongly recommended, that the mechanical installation is completed before the beginning of the electrical installation. Each actuator is supplied with the connecting cable to connect to the controller. It is recommended that the installation should comply with the HSE Memorandum of Guidance on Electricity at Work Regulations A203/24, A203/24/K Connection Details Relays 24 Vac Triacs IQ IQ grey black red Raise COM Lower down up 24 V~ grey red black Raise COM Lower down up Suitable for use with IQ2, IQ3 series relay outputs or relay modules Suitable for use with IQ2, IQ3, IQL, and FC triac outputs A203/230/K Connection Details 230 Vac IQ black brown blue Raise COM Lower down up WARNING These terminals may be connected to hazardous voltages. 3 Data Sheet A203/P/K DIP Switch and Indicator In order to change the DIP switch settings, or to observe the indicator LED, the actuator cover must first be removed. This is done by pushing a small screwdriver into the cover release slot and levering of the cover as indicated by the arrow. A203/P/K Indicator LED The LED indicates the actuator s status: No light - non-operational or no power supply. Constant light - normal operation. Flash (1 Hz) - self adjusting mode Flash (3 Hz) - power supply too low The actuator board is exposed; the positons of the DIP switch and the indicator LED are shown below. indicator LED ON DIP switch A203/P/K Board Changing DIP Switch Settings The 5 pole DIP switch performs a number of functions. In particular, if SW5 is set to ON, the actuator will perform an automatic stroke calibration cycle at power on and every 24 hours.! " #! " # 7 8 J= C A E F K J J 8 J ) 1 + K HHA JE F K J, EHA? J)? If set to ON position, the input signal is in the range from 2 V to 10 V (voltage input) or from 4 ma to 20 ma (current input). SW3: D/I - Direct or inverse acting selector: If set to OFF position, the actuator is direct acting ( lowers as voltage increases). If set to ON position the actuator is inverse acting ( raises as voltage increases). SW4: Reset: Changing this switch position will cause the actuator to go through a self stroking cycle. SW5: Exercise cycle: If set to ON position, the actuator performs one complete exercise cycle every 24 hours to clear possible accumulation of impurities from the valve plug and seat and recalibrate the stroke. 4 Data Sheet COMMISSIONING All series actuators are factory tested prior to shipment. The factory setting of the spindle is in the fully up position. Important: Do not test or operate the uninstalled actuator! Manual Override A203/24 The actuator position can be manually overriden by removing the rubber grommet in the cover, and inserting a 4 mm Allen key. a Installation Procedure 1 Ensure the actuator is electrically isolated. 2 If required to set the DIP switches (/P only), remove the cover. Use a small screwdriver or similar, push the edge into the cover release slot and lever off the cover as indicated by the arrow. WARNING Dangerous voltages may be present. Disconnect power before removing cover. b 4 mm Allen key Set the DIP switches (see DIP switch settings above for details). Replace the cover. 3 Ensure actuator is mounted securely on valve body. Important: Do not test or operate the uninstalled actuator! The load sensitive mechanism requires a resistance which is afforded by the valve, therefore power should not be applied prior to mounting on the valve. If the actuator has been operated prior to mounting, the actuator may not be fully up and it will be difficult to mount the actuator on the valve; under these circumstances return the actuator to its fully up position usng an Allen key (A203/24) or knob (A203/.../K) - see manual override below. The factory setting of the spindle is in the fully up position. 4 Check the valve seat. Before applying power to the actuator, check for mechanical obstructions. e.g VB c up up down 2 port 3 port When power is first applied the actuator will make a clicking sound. This is normal and indicates that the actuator is seeking the top of the valve. It will take approximately 15 to 30 seconds to find the top of the valve and for the load sensitive mechanism to operate whereupon the clicking sound will cease. This indicates that the actuator is operating normally. 5 Stroke the valve For the /P actuator: The actuator will automatically calibrate the stroke when power is applied. down WARNING: The actuator may be over-tightened fully down (A to AB fully open) causing it to lock the! mechanism. To prevent this turn to the end stop and then turn back five clicks of the ratchet. For the /24 and /230 actuators: The actuator is factory set at least 1 mm higher than the up position of the valve, so that commissioning will start by driving the down. Remove the cover as in step 1, and energise the actuator with a Raise signal to drive the down. When the actuator has reached the down end position, the bottom end switch can be seen to click. If the unit does not respond please check the connections once more. Then apply a Lower signal, and the actuator will drive the up until it operates the top end switch at the up end position. The valve is then fully commissioned. During this process the operating time can be precisely measured. 4 Series Electric Actuators Data Sheet T472 Issue 2/B 15/04/04
5 Data Sheet Manual Override (continued) A203/.../K The actuator can be adjusted by the knob. It should be turned in the + direction to lower the and the - direction to raise the. Calibration: The position indicator is factory calibrated, but if you need to make the indicator more precise, or the knob has been moved while the actuator is removed from the valve, then the following advice applies. knob position indicator ring position index lever With the actuator fitted to the valve 1. Energise the actuator with a signal to drive the up. 2. When it stops, check that the position index is pointing to the up position. position index e.g VB - up + down 2 port 3 port outer ring position indicator ring outer ring up position Manual Override Procedure (A203/.., all types) The following procedure should be adopted: For Raise/Lower actuators: Disconnect (or disable) control signals Remove grommet and insert Allen key (A203/24 only) Adjust valve position using Allen key or knob as appropriate To finish, set valve to closed position Remove Allen key and replace grommet (A203/24 only) Restore control signals For Proportional actuators: Disconnect power Remove grommet and insert Allen key (A203/24 only) Adjust valve position using Allen key or knob as appropriate To finish, set valve to closed position Remove Allen key and replace grommet (A203/24 only) Restore power WARNING: Using the Allen key the actuator may be over-tightened fully down (A to AB fully open)! causing it to lock the mechanism. To prevent this turn to the end stop and then turn back five clicks of the ratchet. Note that in the event that the actuator has been inadvertently powered prior to fitting to the valve, the Allen key or knob (as appropriate) can be used to return the actuator to its fully up position. Note that the manual adjustment cap provided for the VB valves is not able to fully push the down. The Allen key or knob (as appropriate) should be used for commissioning puposes. Disconnecting the Cable from the Actuator To disconnect the cable, first ensure that the actuator is electrically isolated. Insert a screwdriver into the cable release slot, push handle away from the mounting ring, and pull the connector out of the actuator by hand. a cable release slot position index lever The outer ring can be moved with respect to the position indicator ring by pulling the position index lever away from the knob, and then moving the outer ring. (Do not turn the knob). 3. Now move the outer and position indicator rings together by applying a sideways pressure on the position indicator lever to align the position index with the valve body index. (Do not turn the knob). b mounting ring position index c valve body index align 4. Energise the actuator to drive the down. Series Electric Actuators Data Sheet T472 Issue 2/B 15/04/04 5
