55 Print Quality Diagnostic Tips Paper Orientation Before diagnosing print quality problems, take a moment to understand the concepts below. This will prevent confusion when diagnosing or escalating a problem. Know your paper orientation when diagnosing a print quality issue. References to direction such as horizontal and vertical must be made holding the paper in portrait orientation (long edges to the left and right) with the printed side facing you. Don t hold the paper in landscape orientation. This is a PORTRAIT Orientation This is a LANDSCAPE Orientation Know the direction of the print when diagnosing a print quality issue. References to the Process or the Scan direction refer to the direction in which the paper travels through the printer. LEF (Long Edge Fed) - Refers to paper that is fed into the printer on the long edge side. SEF (Short Edge Fed) - Refers to paper that is fed into the printer on the short edge side. Scan or Scanning is the direction in which the LED or laser writes to the Process is the paper s direction through the printer that corresponds to the rotation of the photoconductors. 56 General Print Quality Hot Tips and Tricks If paper jams and feed problems are encountered, follow the tips and simple rules of thumb which may solve the issue easily and quickly. Possible Cause Unsupported Media Type Action To Take Check the printer specifications if you are not sure. Unsupported Media Size Check the printer specifications. Unsupported Media Weight Check the printer specifications. Dry Media Change Input Source Paper that is left out of the package for a long period of time can dry out. Try using a fresh ream of paper. Try printing from a different input source. This will help narrow down the cause of some problems. Too Much Media Loaded Make sure the stack height does not exceed the indicated maximum height. Damaged Media Different Types of Media Loaded Too High / Too Low Relative Humidity Media Loaded Improperly Worn-Out Rollers Obstruction in the paper path Check if the media in the tray is wrinkled, creased, damp or curled. The media will not feed properly if damaged. Try a fresh ream of paper. Different types and/or weights of media loaded in the tray may cause missfeeds. Try using the same media. This can affect the media and/or printer and its ability to feed properly. Check the printer specifications to see if it is located in an ambient environment. Reposition the media in the tray or option to make sure that is loaded properly. The media guides should be flushed against the media, but not too tight. Worn-out rollers may cause feed problems. Check the page count of the printer to see if it is time for a maintenance kit to be installed. If paper, staples, paper clips or other items are left in the printer, they can prevent the media from feeding properly. Check if there are any visible obstructions. 57 Complex Parts and Procedures Parts listed in this section are complex for various reasons and are tagged with one or more of the following categories to explain its complexity: High Technical Repair Skill Special Procedure(s)/Calibration(s) Needed Special Tool(s) Needed Damage / Error Risk Other <explanation> Guidelines The instructions for removal, installation and/or special adjustments are found in the Service Manual for each printer. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid additional errors, malfunction, or breakage. Complex parts that you may likely encounter include the ones listed below. Part Difficulty Type Controller Board / Secure Element SIM Card Control Panel EP, Developer, Toner Add Gearbox Fuser / Transfer Module Gearbox Laser (Printhead) Left Door Assembly LVPS PC Drive Motors Smartchip Interface Board Toner Contacts Toner Drop Tubes Transfer Belt Contact High Technical Repair Skill Special Procedure(s)/Calibration(s) Needed Damage / Error Risk Special Procedure(s)/Calibration(s) Needed Damage / Error Risk Damage / Error Risk Other <Contains a memory chip with PC Drive calibration settings> Other <Big and burdensome part> Special Procedure(s)/Calibration(s) Needed Special Procedure(s)/Calibration(s) Needed Special Tool(s) Needed High Technical Repair Skill Other <Difficult Installation> Damage / Error Risk Damage / Error Risk Other <Contains a memory chip with PC Drive calibration settings> Damage / Error Risk Other <Difficult Access> High Technical Repair Skill Damage / Error Risk Other <Difficult access> High Technical Repair Skill Damage / Error Risk Other <Difficult access> High Technical Repair Skill Other <Difficult access> Lexmark Product Study Guide 57 V1.2

58 2nd Transfer Belt This part is extremely hard to replace due to its positioning. Controller Board / Secure Element SIM Card Contains printer NVRAM and possible and possible Secure Element SIM card. A Secure Element SIM card is standard installation on the Lexmark CX860 / XC8160. When replacing this part: Follow recommended Controller Board Backup procedures for the settings contained on the Controller Board (see Restore Tool in the Knowledgebase Service Manual). Check for a Secure Element SIM Card on the existing Controller board. If present, move to the new controller. If the card is lost, customer data will be lost and the machine may have to be replaced. **Until EC1 is released, you will NOT receive an error if the Secure Element SIM card is missing. This part contains NVRAM. Use proper NVRAM preservation procedures do not replace this card with another card that contains NVRAM (Control Panel) at the same time before PORing between parts. Be careful of the cable routing through the holes in the cage. You may want to take a snapshot before removing the cage to make it easier to install correctly. Routing the cables incorrectly may cause damage to the wires from the EP Drive motors. The Scanner HDMI cables that connect to the Controller board can be switched and cause a scanner error. Lexmark Product Study Guide 58 V1.2

59 Control Panel This part contains NVRAM. Use proper NVRAM preservation procedures do not replace this card with another card that contains NVRAM (Controller Board) at the same time before PORing between parts. EP, Developer, Toner Add Gearbox This part is large and cumbersome to remove and replace. Fuser / Transfer Module Gearbox The part has has special settings that must be set in Diagnostics menu once the installation is complete. These settings are calibration data that will affect print quality. If not set, the images on the page could look stretched or compressed. The part should ship with a sheet with the settings to be entered. Laser (Printhead) Although this part is easy to remove, you need a short, stubby hex driver with a ball end to remove one screw. Once replaced, a mechanical and electrical calibration needs to be performed to align the 4 colors. K (black) is aligned first with the mechanical adjustment (there is a screw behind Tray 1); next align CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow) using the Alignment Menu in Diagnostics. Left Door Assembly The Left door comprises three separate parts: MPF, Duplex, and Left Door. This part is extremely hard to reassemble due to a shaft that has to pass through all pieces including 2 brackets on the MPF. If you follow the service manual instructions closely, you can reassemble this piece fairly easily. LVPS The LVPS itself is not difficult; however, if the cage it s mounted to has to be removed during another part replacement you need to be careful of the hinged connection or you will stress and break the solder joints on the board. PC Drive Motors These individual motors are not replaceable separately they have to be replaced as an assembly with the EP Drive FRU. This is because the EP Drive assembly contains a chip that holds calibration settings for the drive motors and communicates this to the Controller Card. The timing of these motors has to be very precise and would be impossible to replace one and match the settings. Replacing only one could cause print quality issues or other unforeseen issues. Lexmark Product Study Guide 59 V1.2

60 Smartchip Interface Board The board is buried in the back of the machine. Numerous parts have to be removed to access it, thus increasing the possibility of damage or errors once put back together. Toner Contacts These contacts are buried in the back of the machine along with the Smartchip Interface Board. Numerous parts have to be removed to access it, thus increasing the possibility of damage or errors once put back together. The Contacts have a recoil spring to cushion them from cartridges slamming into them. Once removed, these springs are extremely difficult to reinstall. Toner Drop Tubes The tubes are buried in the back of the machine. Numerous parts have to be removed to access it, thus increasing the possibility of damage or errors once put back together. The tubes are delicate and will fall apart if you aren t careful. A boot connects the top to the bottom. These are very difficult to replace. Transfer Belt Contact The contact is located inside the front of the machine; however, you have to unplug it from the Smartchip Interface Board with is buried in the back of the machine. This removal is difficult due to the numerous parts that have to be removed to access the Smartchip Interface Board and the potential for damage to the printer or errors once put back together.
