5 Chapter 1 System Description Overview The SpectraComm RLN (Remote LAN Node) system allows remote users to access central site computer networks that operate using LAN facilities. Remote clients can dial through their Cs using a modem, or ISDN Terminal Adapter (TA), and connect to the central site computer network using the SpectraComm RLN system. The SpectraComm RLN ISDN RI system allows users to access the central site LAN with either a modem or TA by dialing the same phone number. The call type is detected automatically by each channel. The RLN, which consists of a rack of modems and an access server, connects the remote user to the central site LAN and allows access to the same resources as if the user was directly connected to the network. These resources include printers, file servers, application servers, Internet access, news, , and so forth. Individual users dial in to the modem rack, which is connected to the RLN Server C by way of a 26-conductor cable that can extend to 250 feet. The SpectraComm RLN system is made of the following components: SpectraComm RLN shelf (one or two 16-slot chassis) SpectraComm RLN server (C compatible platform with server software) Dual V.34 Modems (up to 32 analog lines per shelf) SC5034 Dual Modem Data Set Emulators (up to 24 T1 or 23 ISDN B-channels per shelf) SC5001 Line Terminating Unit (terminates T1 or ISDN RI line) SC RI Card (provides ISDN D-Channel signaling) Refer to Table 1-1 below for the system components and manuals.

In addition, the SpectraComm RLN shelf combines up to 32 individual DTE channels into a high speed serial TDM connection to the SpectraComm RLN server. This connection eliminates the need for separate cabling on each modem interface and allows the SpectraComm RLN server to be remotely located. See Figure 1-1, below.

9 Chapter 2 Installation Overview This chapter guides you through the process of installing and using the SpectraComm RLN System in your communications network. If this is your first experience using these units you may wish to review Chapter 1, System Description, so that you understand the key features and how to install and use the unit in your network. Unpacking and Handling Installation Shelf Inspect the unit for damage. If you find any, notify the shipper immediately. Save the box and packing material so that you can use it to reship the unit, if necessary. All electrical connections are made through the backplane interface. lace the unit in a ventilated area where the ambient temperature does not exceed F (50 0 C). Do not install the unit directly above equipment that generates a large amount of heat (such as power supplies). Refer to your respective product manuals for further installation instructions. See Figure 2-1 for full front view of shelf with installed modems. Figure 2-2 shows a rear view of a typical backpack logic assembly mounted to shelf. Figure 2-3 shows you a shelf-to-shelf connection. To install the SpectraComm Shelf, refer to Operating and Installation Instructions for SpectraComm Shelf, GDC ublication Number 010R ! Be sure to install shelves and power supplies as described in the SpectraComm Shelf manual. Failure to do so may result in overheating and subsequent power supply shutdown.

SpectraComm RI Systems Install cable /N S-076H003-xxx from RLN Server to SpectraComm Shelf (See Figure 2-2). To install a second SpectraComm RLN Shelf, use two cables /N S-024H and /N S-H to connect the two shelves to each other. This is the same as the non-ri or ISDN system, except you add two ribbon cables: /N 029H and /N 029H See Figure 2-4, below.

See Figure 2-3 or Figure 2-4. Diagnostics When the On Line indicator on the Backpack Logic Assembly is lit, the system is in operational mode and refer to Attachmate Software, Attachmate Manual for RLN, MGR operation. If the On Line indicator is flashing or not lit, check the server hardware and software. Non-RI Card SpectraComm System Hardware Revisions Dual V.34 must be at a minimum Ca- by way of the TEAM Manager, or must be or higher by way of the ati4 command DSEs must be at a minimum F- by way of the TEAM Manager, or must be or higher by way of the ati4 command LTU must be F- or higher on the firmware label. If it is lower than F-, you can not upgrade the firmware only since you must return the LTU for a change in artwork. SpectraComm RI System Hardware Revisions 5034 DSEs must be at a minimum Firmware Revision of by way of the ati4 command. For the 5001 LTU must be H- or higher on the firmware label. If it is lower than F-, you can not upgrade the firmware only since you must return the LTU for a change in artwork. RI Card must be at a minimum of -- for the firmware by way of the atss command. NOTE For the above SpectraComm RI Systems revisions, the TEAM application and SCM card are not supported. ISDN configuration parameters can be done only by way of the AT command. RLN Access Server Configuration for Non-RI SpectraComm systems NOTE For systems with a SCM and TEAM application, do not use the RLN provided templates for the 5034 and 5001 LTU. For the 5001 LTU slot, configure the RLN port to be down. For the 5034 DSEs, use the Dual V.34 modem template. Configure the Networking options for the 5034 and 5001 LTU, using the TEAM application. T1 Access Lines Using 5001 LTU 1. rovision a T1 circuit for ESF Network Framing and B8ZS for Network Coding whenever possible. 2. Select a Trunk Signaling method, preferably E & M Wink Start 1.

15 Installation Confirm correct slot locations for 5034 DSEs and 5001 LTU as shown in Figure 2-1. Refer to Table 2-8 for assigning slots to ports for Shelves 1 and Using the RLN Management console, or a C Monitor and keyboard attached directly to the RLN Access Server, configure all async ports. 5. The RLN Server (RLN Server Version 4.2 or higher) has templates for different applications, so choose one that best matches the T1 service characteristics (you might have to customize your particular setup, if necessary). 6. After the 5001 LTU has been configured with the AT string, configure the RLN port to be down. Analog Lines Using Dual V.34 Modems 1. Using the RLN Management console, or a C Monitor and keyboard attached directly to the RLN Access Server, configure all async ports. 2. The RLN Server contains the GDC Dual V.34 Modem template. Select this template for all appropriate ports (you might have to customize an AT string for your particular setup, if necessary). NOTE For the best client connections, GDC recommends any GDC Desktop, Fastpro, or Quester modems. Refer to Attachmate RLN Server manual for complete details on configuration and set-up.
