PrintPAD advantage Simplify Daily Operations: Carry, Charge, Communicate Carry The PrintPAD is designed to simplify your daily operations. With the PrintPAD, users carry both their handheld computer and printer in one convenient well-designed unit. Using a single integrated product eliminates the hassle of juggling multiple devices and decreases the chance of dropping or misplacing a device in the field. The PrintPAD also provides another layer of protection to your handheld computer. Charge The PrintPAD provides a smart recharging solution by charging both the handheld and the printer at the same time from a single AC or car adaptor. That means you have half the adaptors to buy and keep track of on the road. This is not only convenient for workers in the field but also reduces the cost associated with purchasing and maintaining multiple charging devices. Communicate The PrintPAD provides seamless communication between the handheld computer and printer. When the handheld is in the cradle, it communicates directly with the printer. An integral Bluetooth option gives mobile workers the ability to communicate with the printer wirelessly when the handheld device is not residing in the PrintPAD. The optional DEX port makes DEX connections to central distributors easy without the need for special software or mechanical switches. Cost Effective... In today s cost conscious market, the purchase cost and the cost to maintain a solution are critically important. Fewer accessories - In a typical solution using a separate printer and mobile computer, you need accessories for both devices. But with the PrintPAD you don t need all those cables. Since the PrintPAD charges both devices at the same time, all you need is a cigarette light adaptor and an AC Adaptor. 15 Labatt s Mobile Printing Moneymaker featuring PrintPad Integrated Printing Systems rout e accounting for the beer segment Mobile computers have become a key component of successful route accounting and delivery operations in many industries. Mobile printers play an important part in these applications, but printer selection is sometimes treated as an afterthought by companies that don t realize the critical role printers play in making these systems run smoothly and efficiently for both delivery drivers and customers. As the largest brewer in the country, Labatt Breweries of Canada has built its reputation both on the quality of its beer and service to its customers. In Quebec, more than 18,000 of those customers have benefited from the company s use of mobile technology to manage invoicing, truck inventory, and account settlement on the more than 300 trucks that deliver Labatt s beer throughout the province. The company recently upgraded its mobile printing solution with new rugged 4-inch thermal printers that have increased driver efficiency, improved customer service, and helped Labatt better manage its accounts. Problem Labatt initially deployed a mobile route accounting solution in 2002 that integrated mobile computers, mobile printers, and CISOmniciel route management software. While the existing system worked well, the mobile printers were fairly large and used special 8.5-by-11-inch paper to print customer invoices on-site. Once the invoices were printed, customers would sign the paper copy and drivers were expected to bring them back to the distribution center to be filed. Each distribution center (DC) had its own filing system, says Nicolas Gogotsis, business relationship manager for Labatt in Quebec. In some cases, the DC had nowhere to store the invoices. Paperwork was difficult to manage and sometimes got lost. A bigger problem was that customers would occasionally forget to sign the invoices. With no signature, there was no proof of delivery, and that made it difficult for Labatt to manage its billing when customer disputes arose. Labatt decided to upgrade its delivery system to automatically capture customer signatures electronically and institute business rules so that drivers couldn t complete their delivery transactions without those important signatures. Gogotsis says the company also needed to upgrade its printers to reduce costs and improve delivery operations. We wanted to offer our customers a 4-inch invoice, as it has become the industry standard and would help us reduce our paper usage, he says. Switching to a thermal printer would also allow for faster printing and eliminate the cost of ink or printer ribbons. The new version of CIS-Omniciel Route Manager and Route Partner software, in conjunction with Intermec CN3 mobile computers, provided the electronic signature capture capabilities that Labatt was looking for. The only piece missing was a more affordable printing solution. Solution Labatt tested portable printers from a variety of vendors before ultimately selecting devices from Datamax- O Neil. Datamax-O Neil had just released 4-inch PrintPAD CN3 printers designed specifically for the Intermec CN3 computers, which would be the perfect fit for the Labatt application. The only problem was that in order to meet its deployment deadlines, Labatt would have to have the printers in a matter of weeks. Unfortunately, the new models from Datamax-O Neil were not yet available in production quantities. By understanding the urgency surrounding the implementation, Datamax-O Neil was ultimately able to deliver the 300 printers by working out a segmented delivery schedule with Labatt. Labatt planned to deploy the system on a few routes at a time, so the company provided The new units provide lightning-fast printing, which allows us to save time and be more productive. -Nicolas Gogotsis Business Relationship Manager

route accounting for the beer market Datamax-O Neil with a breakdown of its rollout schedule. The vendor knew exactly how many printers the company needed each week. They provided us with the number we needed on a daily basis, Gogotsis says. We got six or seven shipments from them in different quantities so that we wouldn t have to delay the rollout. Results With the new solution, delivery drivers print out all of their route documents and inventory sheets each morning and set out to deliver beer to Labatt customers. At each delivery, they use the handheld computers to confirm the invoice amounts and their inventories. They also pick up any product that needs to be returned. The customer then signs off on the invoice using the signature pad on the computer. The driver connects the handheld to the PrintPAD CN3 printer and prints off a copy of the invoice to leave with the customer. At the end of the day, the driver closes out the route on the handheld computer and prints out an information sheet for the supervisor. The mobile computers are placed into a docking station each evening, and the invoices and signatures are uploaded into the route solution and Labatt s homegrown ERP (enterprise resource p l a n -n i n g ) system. All of the invoices are electronically archived so that if there is a question about a delivery later, staff can easily pull up the invoice and signature. We solved the issue of lost invoices by implementing a system which automatically archives invoices for us, Gogotsis says. We also made sure that invoices were signed, because with Route Partner it is impossible to print the invoice unless the customer signs on the handheld computers. We built some business logic into the application that only allows invoice printing once there is a signature. The new printers also saved time and money by improving driver productivity and reducing Labatt s materials cost. The old paper had special holes in the side so we could tear it off, and it was very costly, Gogotsis says. Multiple Mobile Printer Connectivity Options Improve Operations When Labatt Breweries was considering which new mobile printer would be the best fit for its route accounting application, there were many factors that played a part in the company s decision-making process. One of the things Labatt liked best about the PrintPAD CN3 portable printers from Datamax- O Neil was the fact that the devices provided multiple connectivity options and other additional functionality the company can utilize in the future as its application needs change. The Bluetooth connectivity capabilities and magnetic card reader on the printer will allow us to be ready for any future application requirements, says Nicolas Gogotsis, business relationship manager for Labatt in Quebec. Labatt drivers currently connect their Intermec CN3 mobile computers directly to the PrintPAD printers via a special docking component attached to the printers, but Bluetooth short-range wireless connectivity is available if they need it. We use the Bluetooth connectivity as a backup, Gogotsis says. The direct docking connection allows us to print faster, but the option is there when we need it. The printers have a magnetic stripe card reader option, which will eventually allow Labatt customers to pay at the point of delivery using a credit card. The PrintPAD printer also supports printing of 1-D and 2-D bar codes and includes 4 MB of flash memory and 2 MB RAM. In addition, the PrintPAD features an external DC charge port, LEDs, and an enhanced battery compartment for easy battery removal. Since the new printers are thermal, they don t require a print ribbon, which has led to even more savings as Labatt prints more than 800,000 invoices per year. Labatt is using less paper overall, which has provided environmental benefits as well. The printers also allow the drivers to do their jobs faster, because they don t have to print a second copy of the invoice. The printers are smaller and lighter (the drivers carry them with a shoulder strap) and easier to handle than the old, bulkier units. The new units provide lightning-fast printing, which allows us to save time and be more productive, Gogotsis says. The entire project, including mobile computers, mobile printers, and software, cost less than $1.5 million (Canadian), and Gogotsis says the return on investment was quickly realized through savings in materials, added productivity, and the implementation of new business rules that helped improve the billing process. It has improved our customer service by allowing us to serve more customers with the time we save using the new devices, he adds. We also now have a uniform invoice along with the rest of our competitors in the industry. Labatt is currently deploying an SAP solution to replace its existing ERP system, but Gogotsis says he doesn t expect any major changes to the route system other than new interfaces. Eventually, Labatt will take advantage of the magnetic card swipe technology on the printers to accept customer payments at the time of delivery (see sidebar). Gogotsis also hopes to leverage the GPS technology in the Intermec computers to provide real-time location data on the delivery trucks. We solved the issue of lost invoices by implementing a system which automatically archives invoices for us. -Nicolas Gogotsis Business Relationship Manager

Producer s Dairy Decreased Annual Costs By Approximately $55,000 featuring PrintPad Integrated Printing System route accounting Producer s Dairy is an independent dairy that has been in business for more than 75 years. The company supplies fresh dairy products that distribution personnel deliver directly to clients across the western United States. Imagine you are a grocer receiving a delivery of a Producer s Dairy product. What do you expect at the time of delivery? You certainly expect to be able to verify that your order is correct, pay for your order, and obtain a receipt. Problem Producer s Dairy operates from 10 locations throughout California, and has more than 2,500 customers. To be able to satisfy customer expectations, the company began using handheld computers and portable printers more than 10 years ago. The handheld Producer s was using was experiencing a failure rate of 8% to 10% per day, mostly due to the non-rugged nature of the devices. These failures were causing us to waste valuable time while waiting days for a replacement, says Frank Sewill, director of administration at Producer s Dairy, More importantly, the failures were causing customers to be dissatisfied because they were unable to pay or obtain a receipt at the point of sale. Along with the aging handhelds, Producer s Dairy was using dot matrix 8 1/2 X 11 in. printers, which were mounted in the delivery trucks. The drivers had to go back and forth from the delivery site to the truck when printing an invoice or receipt. The printers the company used required 8 ½-by-11 inch paper and a printer ribbon, which combined, ended up costing Producer s Dairy $40,000 each year. Using an 8 ½-by-11 inch piece of paper for an invoice with only one or two items was wasting expensive paper. In January 2007, the company received notification that its current handheld model was being discontinued. The dairy used this as an opportunity to search for handheld and printer hardware that was more technologically advanced Producer s Dairy chose the handheld because it has a large touch screen, yet is light and easy to carry. Most importantly, it is durable. The handheld was tested in rugged conditions to ensure it could survive being shaken and tumbled around in the large Producer s Dairy trucks. than their existing hardware. With more durable equipment they would experience fewer hardware failures and, in turn, maximize customer satisfaction. The first step in the search for a new route delivery solution was to speak with the company s long time Route Accounting software VAR, Ross Computer Systems, to get an idea of which products in the market would be compatible. Producer s Dairy was very satisfied with the performance of Ross mobile route accounting software that they were using and wanted to keep that software with the addition of the more ruggedized hardware. We also talked to other local dairies to gain insight into what they were using and how it was working for them, says Sewill. Solution Producer s Dairy chose the Motorola MC70 handheld mobile computers and Datamax-O Neil PrintPADs (portable integrated printing systems) that were recommended by Ross. The handheld computers and printers are integrated via a wireless Bluetooth connection. Producer s Dairy chose the handheld because it has a large touch screen, yet is light and easy to carry. Most importantly, it is durable. The handheld was tested in rugged conditions to ensure it could survive being shaken and tumbled around in the large Producer s Dairy trucks. The printers that the company chose are thermal, which eliminates the need for 8 ½-by-11 inch paper and printer ribbons. They are compact and portable, so the distribution personnel can carry the entire module into the store, have the customer sign on the screen, and immediately print a receipt. The invoice and electronic signature are automatically uploaded into the company s computer system.

route accounting Producer s Dairy decided to order and distribute thesolution in three batches to spread out cost, and currently eight of 10 branches have implemented the solution. Before distribution of each batch, the company sent a mass to the branch to announce the shipment of a single module for the distribution personnel to test. A week later, the company sent the remainder of the modules to that location and determined a date to switch over. Since the handheld computer is a Windows-based system using the same software as before, the transition was easy, says Sewill. As one branch received the solution, the others were calling and begging for it. Results As a result of the solution, the dairy is saving $40,000 per year from the elimination of 8 ½-by-11 inch paper and printer ribbons. The company is also saving around $15,000 per year due to the elimination of the labor hours necessary to scan all of the receipts. Producer s Dairy expects payback on the route delivery solution in less than two years. The company is currently in the process of implementing the solution at the final two branches to complete the installation process. When Producers Dairy wanted to update its route delivery system, the company turned to its longtime route accounting software VAR, Ross Computer Systems. Ross was founded in 1967 with a focus on host system applications, then developed its first handheld application in the mid 1980s, and currently offers a full suite of DSD (direct store delivery) route accounting applications. The fact that Ross focuses exclusively on the route accounting DSD industry has always been key in working with Producer s. In Producers case, our knowledge of the dairy industry has proven extremely valuable, says Darren Weiss, sales and marketing manager at Ross. Producer s Dairy has used Ross host application, RAMS (route accounting and manufacturing system), and handheld application STORS (sales, tracking, ordering, route settlement) since Last year, when it was time for Producers to choose a new handheld device, the dairy decided to go with a rugged Motorola unit running Ross STORS software. When Frank Sewill, Director of Administration at Producers, spoke with Weiss to discuss a ruggedized route solution, Weiss immediately had products in mind. I recommended the Motorola MC70 handheld with the Datamax- O Neil PrintPAD, said Weiss. The PrintPAD is our best selling mobile printer, accounting for a majority of our mobile printer sales for the past two years. Ross integrates RAMS (or any other host application) and STORS through STORSLink, the company s communication application. Integration of the software allows the host and handheld applications to communicate so data can be transmitted between the two systems in real time throughout the day, or in batch mode at the end of the day. Looking forward, the integration between Ross various DSD applications and the VAR s understanding of the route accounting industry will enable Producer s Dairy to easily add additional software applications as its business needs grow.

Hot Spots Energize Mobile DSD Solutions featuring PrintPad Integrated Printing System direct store delivery From harsh environments to remote network access difficulties, DSD (direct store delivery) applications create many challenges for VARs building mobile IT solutions. It doesn t matter if you re upgrading existing route accounting systems, or designing and implementing an infrastructure for new customers. Primo Water contacted VAR Integrated Solutions in 2005 as the vendor was preparing to launch its national brand of purified and mineral enhanced bottled water. The Winston-Salem, N.C. vendor started with 100 DSD routes in the southeast, with a goal of close to 1,000 in the next few years. Problem Integrated Solutions designed the route solution to include Hand Held Products Dolphin 7900 mobile computers and Datamax-O Neil PrintPAD mobile printers (integrated printing solutions), as well as its Route (DSD solution), and MobileConX (communications infrastructure) software. Primo needed to track all of its transactions from the field using an electronic [paperless] system, and we were there from the beginning developing the technology infrastructure that allowed that goal to be attained, said Mike Sweeney, VP of sales for Integrated Solutions. Solution In order for DSD solutions to be successful, three key components are required, a rugged handheld device, a rugged mobile printer, and rugged software, all delivered in a reliable, logistically tight package. The combination of the Hand Held Products Dolphin 7900 (with Adaptus Imaging Technology 5.0), Datamax-O Neil PrintPAD, and Integrated Solutions software gave Primo the complete solution they needed to be successful. Integrated Solutions chose the Datamax-O Neil PrintPAD for this project because of the unit s compact enclosure, the integrated handheld cradle, and the ability to charge both the handheld and the printer with one power supply. With the PrintPAD, there is no guessing on the connectivity between the handheld and printer if the unit is in the cradle, you've got a connection, said Sweeney. Including a PrintPAD as part of the mobile solution means there are fewer pieces involved than with other mobile printer/handheld combinations. Fewer pieces mean less potential points of failure and a more reliable solution. Primo chose Integrated Solutions With the Printpad, there is no guessing on the connectivity between the handheld and printer If the unit s in the slot, you've got a connection... -Mike Sweeney Integrated Solutions because of our fifteen years of experience and our ability to design and develop the software, recommend and provide the hardware, and roll out the complete solution, added Sweeney. Leverage Free Wireless For Field Communication Integrated Solutions MobileConX software provides Primo with multiple connectivity options (including hot spots) to keep the route drivers in sync with the corporate enterprise. They needed a route accounting solution that could synchronize information and receive automatic updates on handheld devices when drivers were out of the Primo terminal. One of the methods the route drivers use to accomplish this is to access the MobileConX central server via public Internet hot spots, said Sweeney. Leveraging free Wi-Fi access points eliminates the cost of wireless plans for communications and allows Primo drivers to connect minimally (once or twice daily) to synchronize data and transmit delivery information. Technically, the drivers only need to synch once per day, but some do it more frequently for morning and end-of-day settlement and reporting. While hot spots seem great when surfing the Web on your laptop at

direct store delivery Starbucks, transmitting mission critical confidential data over that type of portal requires additional security and performance capabilities, said Sweeney. Integrated designed MobileConX to provide the secure communications required to keep its customers information protected. Integrated Solutions DocMaster software creates an electronic image of each invoice the driver prints off with the proof of delivery store stamp, signature, and all of the sales information. The next time drivers connect to the Internet an electronic copy of the document can automatically be posted to the Web for access by their customers, or be e- mailed directly to a client. Customer service personnel will have immediate access to these documents through the MobileConX WebFront. This solution not only met Primo s electronic [paperless route] goal, but helped the company improve its billing time and cash flow, and reduced customer service costs with a customer self-service portal, said Sweeney. Results Primo drivers start each day with the Dolphin 7900 and the Integrated Solutions software directing them to the first stop. The driver delivers the product to the store and tracks the inventory with the handheld s imager by scanning 1-D and 2-D bar codes. Route software allows the Primo driver to complete the order, including checking returned bottles and other transaction tasks. After the customer reviews the transaction, their signature is captured electronically on the Dolphin 7900 touch screen. Then the driver completes the proof of delivery function and Route software prepares an invoice. The Datamax-O Neil PrintPAD prints the invoice, including all of the transaction information and the customer s signature. A bar code is printed on the invoice that includes a block for the customer to apply a proof of delivery stamp. Once that mark is applied, the driver scans the bar code on the invoice using the Dolphin 7900, which retrieves the related information and takes a digital image of the store stamp all with one scan. A copy of the invoice is left with the customer and Integrated s DocMaster creates an identical electronic version of that form including the transaction data, signature, and store stamp. The process is repeated at each stop on the route. Any time during the day, Primo s driver can use the MobileConX hot spot finder and synchronize with the central server using public Wi-Fi hot Transmitting mission critical confidential data over hot spots requires additional security and performance capabilities spots. All of the route data collected is transmitted, including invoices and related documents. Customer service personnel at Primo, as well as clients themselves, have instant access to uploaded information via the MobileConX portal. Integrated Solutions was able to provide Primo with the solution in less than two months and the system achieved payback within six months. Over the last year, Primo expanded delivery to more than 5,000 locations across the United States and continues to grow.

Improve Cash Flow and Reduce Paperwork The use of portable receipt printing in mobile computing is often used in the field. Companies such as Sears Roebuck are putting computers in the hands of field service technicians to make them more efficient and to streamline and speed basic functions, such as billing; and to save millions of dollars. The retailer's HomeCentral operation is the largest appliance repair firm in the United States, with over 13,000 technicians who make 11 million in-home repairs a year. The hardware used by the field service technicians includes sturdy laptops and portable printers; and Sears' service vans have been converted into wireless network base stations. Another good example is Calor Service, one of Italy s most important companies working in the servicing of heating and air conditioning systems. Calor Service adopted mobile computing including portable printers to obtain better day-to-day performance by their service technicians. Calor Services is the Official Service Centre for Caldaie Beretta: one of the most famous Italian manufacturers of heating and air conditioning devices. 22 End of the Paper Chase: Nevada Beverage Chooses Datamax-O Neil s PrintPAD to Improve Invoicing Process featuring PrintPAD Integrated Printing System route accounting The printers are wonderful. The drivers love them, and the learning curve wasn t steep at all...when we brought in the Datamax-O Neil printers and had a couple of drivers try them, I was really impressed with the durability, the battery life, and the ease of operation. In the end, the decision was easy. - Derick Hufstader IT Director, Nevada Beverage Company Founded in 1948, Las Vegas-based Nevada Beverage Company has been helping quench thirsts throughout Southern Nevada for over 50 years. The company a major wholesaler of Anheuser Busch beers and distributor of non-alcoholic beverages including Monster energy drinks covers over 40,000 square miles of the Silver State and has an annual sales volume of over 11 million cases. When you sell the volume of beverages that we do, you re generating a lot of invoices; until recently, that meant we were generating and paying for a lot of paper, says Derick Hufstader, IT director at Nevada Beverage. Hufstader explains this multidimensional IT issue at Nevada Beverage and how finding the right partners in Vermont Information Processing (VIP) and Datamax-O Neil transformed not only the generation and consumption of paper at the company, but also saved time, improved accuracy, enhanced customer service, and generated better employee morale across multiple departments. Problem The problem was not simply the volume of paper invoices used on a daily basis, but also the documentation and processing of invoices, the amount of time route reconciliation was taking for drivers, and the accuracy of customer invoicing. We were a bit old school, says Hufstader. We d run these invoices the same way for years; whether it was invoices or statements, we were printing a ton of paper. been signed and by whom. We needed to reduce the time involved. If the customer wanted a copy of an invoice, we didn t want to copy and fax it. We needed a better solution altogether. Solution Nevada Beverage turned to Colchester, Vt.-based Vermont Information Processing, an IT consultant specializing in work for beverage wholesalers. VIP had helped Nevada Beverage move from a custom IBM AS400 solution to a more robust beverage solution; turning to them was natural to Hufstader. Among all the providers out there, we liked what they offered us, he says. VIP provided everything from electronic commerce to individual handheld computers used for driver sales, deliveries, or applications for the corporate sales department. So Hufstader presented the invoicing problem to VIP. After analyzing the situation, they came back with a solution that used digital printing and mobile computing hardware with their installed beverage application to meet the requirements. VIP provided Nevada with options from various companies they partnered with, which they tested. Because we live in a desert climate, we were skeptical about the affects of heat, and how things, such as battery life and durability, were going to work in our environment, says Hufstader. Nevada Beverage used custom, two-part, tractor feed invoices that cost, on average, seven cents per copy. We wanted to reduce that cost, as well as the filing and reconciliation associated with invoicing, Hufstader continues. We also wanted to access all this data in a digital format, instead of going to a file cabinet, looking at each individual invoice, and checking for how it had

route accounting Durability, longevity, usability, and the ability to withstand heat were the characteristics that the new system had to have for drivers in the field. If the battery life wasn t good enough for the printers to last all day, then it would be pointless, because drivers have to plug them into the truck to make them work. The printers operational life had to be four to five years to justify the investment in the hardware. Drivers aren t really soft on things, says Hufstader. They re driving trucks in a brutal environment, and they re going to drop the printers. We tried other printers that we liked, but I didn t think they would deliver the longevity that we would get from the Datamax-O Neil printers. When we brought in the Datamax-O Neil printers and had a couple of drivers try them, I was really impressed with the durability, battery life, and ease of operation. In the end, the decision was easy. The final solution Nevada Beverage selected uses VIP s software running on Motorola MC 75 Enterprise Digital Assistants and uses Bluetooth connectivity to Datamax- O Neil s PrintPAD integrated printing system. The sleek design of the PrintPAD allows Nevada Beverage drivers to carry, charge, and communicate in a package that is ideal for route accounting and direct store delivery. It charges both the printer and the handheld, eliminating the need to purchase and maintain multiple A.C. adaptors and chargers. Key to Nevada Beverage is the integral Bluetooth option that gives drivers the ability to communicate with the printer wirelessly while on the move in the field. The printers are wonderful, says Hufstader. The drivers love them. The learning curve wasn t steep, which was another concern of mine: How am I going to get drivers who have been doing this job for 20 years to move from paper invoices to a digital format? It took getting some buy in, but they fell right into place and actually like it now. I can t imagine going back to a paper invoice. Results In Nevada Beverage s process, the invoices are loaded to the handheld computers in the evening. That s done at about 7 or 8 p.m.; that s when we decide which driver is going to deliver invoices to a particular array of customers, says Hufstader. When the driver comes in the next morning, he prints from his handheld a summary that shows all the products that he will be taking out for the day. He then verifies the product that is on his truck before he takes it out, because he is solely responsible for all of them. This is signed off by the driver s supervisor to confirm that those are the products leaving the warehouse. Then the driver goes to his first delivery stop and prints a pick sheet that tells the customer what is being delivered. The customer checks whether the price and quantity are correct. The customer agrees or disagrees with the delivery. If the customer agrees, the driver unloads the product. Once the product is unloaded, the driver moves further into the application on the handheld and indicates that the product has been delivered. The customer signs, and the invoice is printed with the signature captured. The driver hands the original to the customer, and then moves on to the next customer. Hufstader references five prime benefits of eliminating the old school two-part paper invoice: 1. A significant reduction in the amount of paper being generated 2. Elimination of the need to manually file invoices 3. Significantly reduced time for route reconciliation upon driver check in 4. More accurate invoices delivered to customers 5. Increased employee morale across multiple departments The most enjoyable benefit for Hufstader was one that surprised him. It brought everyone closer together, he concludes. It s made the drivers think about how they could make their next stop more efficient. When they get back to the warehouse, instead of just handing over a piece of paper and taking off, there s more of a cohesive and collaborative environment, with everyone working together. It s an intangible but absolutely palpable thing that I didn t expect to come out of this process.

Integrated Solutions and Datamax-O Neil Collaborate to Meet Emerging Market Demand featuring PrintPAD Integrated Printing System field force automation How can you go wrong choosing the same Handheld technology that UPS uses, and a PrintPAD from the company that invented mobile printing? Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Integrated Solutions International (Integrated Solutions) is a systems integrator and software developer that specializes in field force automation. Field force automation includes both external personnel such as salespeople and delivery drivers, as well as internal staff including warehouse and retail personnel. The development of this product shows their flexibility and how they ve remained responsive as they ve grown and changed over time. That s important for us in meeting our customers needs. With this product, Datamax-O Neil has improved the PrintPAD concept. - Mike Sweeney, Vice President, Sales Integrated Solutions International, LLC For nearly two decades, Integrated Solutions has been automating mobile workforces, enabling companies to maximize operational efficiency, increase productivity, and improve levels of customer satisfaction. We re involved in virtually everything related to mobility, says Mike Sweeney, Vice President of Sales at Integrated Solutions. Our clients range from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses, for which we provide key solutions including route accounting, field service, sales automation, and merchandising. One of the industry segments the company has been particularly close to is logistics providers: those involved in delivering goods. When UPS adopted a new mobile computer as their platform (Honeywell s Dolphin 99EX), there was a groundswell in the industry to move towards this platform and incorporate a PrintPAD that worked with it. Unfortunately, the PrintPAD didn t exist, and interest in developing a new PrintPAD had waned. Problem Customers used to be concerned that PrintPADs were tied to a specific device, says Sweeney. Because of the pace of mobile device development, companies were loath to get tied into hardware that could rapidly prove obsolete. Ironically, these same customers were clamoring for a PrintPAD to be tied to a device the Dolphin 99EX. guaranteed to be around a long time. UPS is deploying over 100,000 of these units, IT directors of logistics providers aren t going to lose their jobs for using the same technology that UPS is using! But there was a lingering problem: all these customers had used PrintPADs in the past. They liked PrintPADs and wanted to know when a PrintPAD was going to come out for the Dolphin 99EX. However, there weren t any on the drawing boards. Our customers have been using PrintPADs for years, says Sweeney. They weren t going to give them up easily. When we showed companies this device, they loved it because of its groundbreaking capabilities and that UPS had made it their standard, Sweeney explains. Honeywell designed this device to be available for purchase for seven years, and serviced for an additional five years thereafter. This was unheard of in our industry, and customers liked the idea that this product was

field force automation Tom Stopyra Vice President of Engineering at Integrated Solutions explains they had specified PrintPAD solutions for years because of its platform design, with the printer on one side and the cradle on the other, which reduced complexity from a logistics perspective. The printer and the handheld can be charged with one truck charger or one home charger, so there s fewer pieces to handle, Stopyra says. It s a tight, clean package for the end user. While many people say the PrintPAD costs more than a printer, when you look at the total solution (i.e., an integrated PrintPAD versus a printer, a handheld, a cradle, and charging equipment), the PrintPAD is less expensive. At a time when many thought PrintPADs had become passé, a strong, new need emerged. Solution Integrated Solutions turned to Datamax- O Neil and asked them to build a PrintPAD. Sweeney says he needed to be persistent in his approach, as Datamax-O Neil was well aware that the industry had shown diminished interest in PrintPADs because of the concern that they tied into technology that could become rapidly obsolete. Because of the platform decision by UPS and the seven-year life cycle, the traditional argument against PrintPADs evaporated, says Sweeney. We pointed out that this combination would be unique: no one else had a ultra-rugged mobile computer with a PrintPAD solution; eventually they became as excited about it as we were. As Stopyra put it How can you go wrong choosing the same Handheld technology that UPS uses, and a PrintPAD from the company that invented mobile printing? According to Sweeney, Datamax-O Neil has improved the PrintPAD concept for what he calls the UPS unit. Previously, when the handheld was in the PrintPAD dock, it would talk to the printer via a direct connection. Now all the PrintPADs have Bluetooth. So the PrintPAD can be mounted in the truck; when the driver walks up to the truck to fulfill an order, they can automatically print without a hard connection, says Sweeney. From that perspective, having Bluetooth integrated into the PrintPAD gives them more use cases - and greater value. The new PrintPAD units also incorporate card readers that speed up and simplify tasks such as Credit Card payments and Driver s License reading. Datamax-O Neil also developed the e-charge, says Sweeney. This is ideal for mounting and charging units. There are three metal contacts on the back of the PrintPAD, so when the user drops it into the mounting bracket it automatically charges. You don t have to physically plug a charger into the print pad when you mount it in the truck. Results Sweeney says that the new PrintPADs are selling like proverbial hotcakes. The first 250 were sold within six weeks, he says. We expect to sell about 6,000 Dolphin 99EX mobile computers with PrintPADs over the next six to 18 months. The initial users are fairly similar, with applications involving delivery. Whether to retail or homes, many will take the PrintPAD directly to the customer (e.g., scan product off the truck, take the PrintPAD to the customer, collect a signature, print an Invoice or Receipt, provide it to the customer, and move on to the next one). They will also use it to print other documents such as DOT and End Of Day reports. We ve been working with Datamax-O Neil since the inception of our company, notes Sweeney. The development of this product shows their flexibility and how they ve remained responsive as they ve grown and changed over time. That s important for us in meeting our customers needs. Something, Sweeney says, you can print.

Improve Sales Force Productivity The explosion of portable information devices and the increasing use of wireless technology have prompted more and more companies to connect their frontline workers to complete transactions at the point-of-sale or point-of-service. One example of this is with Route Accounting: beverage companies for instance take advantage of the benefits of route accounting to reduce the time needed to complete a sale, to improve sales force productivity and create more satisfied customers. Examples are Nestle Water, Europe s leading water cooling company and Grupo Modelo, the eighth largest beer maker in the world and owner of the prestigious Corona Extra brand. Relevant statistical and historic data for each customer is stored on hand-held computers; data is read and updated with each visit and delivery notes or receipts issued. Each route is kept constantly up-to-date with inventory and sales data. Similar systems are currently being used in Nestlé Water and Kraft Foods. About Datamax-O Neil Datamax-O Neil is a trusted global provider of stationary and portable label and receipt printing solution products that enable manufacturing and supply markets to capture the benefits of automated product identification and automated legal and financial transactions. Datamax-O Neil is the barcode and mobile printing business group of Dover Corporation s Product Identification Group (PIDG), a global platform entity with products and services covering all the leading marking technologies and applications. The company s products address a wide variety of applications, including those in the industrial, healthcare, retail, automotive and ticketing market sectors. Datamax-O Neil is headquartered in Orlando, Florida, and maintains key facilities in California, Illinois, and France, as well as sales and technical support offices around the world.
