Hardware Activities: 1.- Search for information about the difference between BITS, BYTES and other units of measure for digital information. a) A bit is the basic unit of information in computing and digital communications. A bit can have only one of two values, and may therefore be physically implemented with a two-state device. These values are most commonly represented as either a 0 or 1. The term bit is a portmanteau of binary digit. The two values can also be interpreted as logical values (true/false, yes/no), algebraic signs (+/ ), activation states (on/off), or any other two-valued attribute. The correspondence between these values and the physical states of the underlying storage or device is a matter of convention, and different assignments may be used even within the same device or program b)the byte is a unit of digital information that most commonly consists of eight bits. 2.- Create a table like the one below classifying the following components in output/input components: Monitor, mouse, keyboard, hard disk drive (HDD), graphic cards, sound cards, memory(rom & RAM), motherboard, scanner, camera, printer, speakers, CD-DVD player/recorder and USB memory COMPONENT DESCRIPTION IMAGE TRASLATION MONITOR A monitor or a display is an electronic visual display for computers. A monitor usually comprises the display device, circuitry, casing, and power MONITOR /PANTALLA
supply. The display device in modern monitors is typically a thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) thin panel, while older monitors used a cathode ray tube (CRT) MOUSE INPUT A mouse is a pointing device that detects twodimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on a display, which allows for fine control of a graphical user interface. KEYBOARD INPUT A computer keyboard is a typewriter-style device, which uses an arrangement of RATON TECLADO
buttons or keys, to act as mechanical levers or electronic switches. Following the decline of punch cards and paper tape, interaction via teleprinterstyle keyboards became the main input device for computers. HDD A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive or fixed disk is a data storage device used for storing and retrieving digital information using one or more rigid ("hard") rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with magnetic material. DISCO DURO
GRAPHIC CARD A video card (also called a video adapter, display card, graphics card, graphics board, display adapter, graphics adapter or frame buffer) is an expansion card which generates a feed of output images to a display TARJETA GRÁFICA SOUND CARD A sound card (also known as an audio card) is an internal computer expansion card that facilitates economical input and output of audio signals to and from a computer under control of computer programs TARJETA DE SONIDO
MEMORY Random-access memory (RAM) is a form of computer data storage. MEMORIA(RAM /ROM) Data stored in ROM can only be modified slowly, with difficulty, or not at all MOTHERBOARD A motherboard ( is the main printed circuit board (PCB) found in computers and other expandable systems. It holds and allows communication between many of the crucial electronic components of a system PLACA BASE
SCANNER INPUT A scanner is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object, and converts it to a digital image. CAMERA INPUT A camera encodes digital images and videos digitally and stores them for later reproduction ESCANER CAMARA PRINTER A printer is a peripheral which makes a persistent human readable representation of graphics or text on paper or similar physical media. IMPRESORA
SPEAKERS A device which converts an electrical audio signal into a corresponding sound. CD-DVD PLAYER/RECORDER A CD-DVD player/recorder is a device that plays/record discs onto blank writable disks ALTAVOCES CD/DVD USB MEMORY A USB flash drive, also known under a variety of other names,is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. USB flash drives are typically removable and rewritable PENDRIVE
3.-We use different ports in order to connect the internal components of a computer to the peripheral devices. Find the most common use of: PS/2:The PS/2 connector is a 6-pin mini-din connector used for connecting some keyboards and mice to a PC compatible computer system HDMI:(High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a proprietary audio/video interface for transferring uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data from an HDMI-compliant source device, such as a display controller, to a compatible computer monitor, video projector, digital television, or digital audio device.[4] HDMI is a digital replacement for analog video standards. USB:USB, short for Universal Serial Bus, is an industry standard developed in the mid-1990s that defines the cables, connectors and communications protocols used in a bus for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and electronic devices USB was designed to standardize the connection of computer peripherals (including keyboards, pointing devices, digital cameras, printers, portable media players, disk drives and network adapters) to personal computers, VGA:Video Graphics Array (VGA) refers specifically to the display hardware first introduced with the IBM PS/2 line of computers in 1987,[1] but through its widespread adoption has also come to mean either an Amplitude Modulated computer display standard, the 15-pin D- subminiature VGA connector or the 640x480 resolution itself. SATA:Serial ATA (SATA, abbreviated from Serial AT Attachment[2]) is a computer bus interface that connects host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. FireWire:IEEE 1394 is an interface standard for a serial bus for high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data transfer. It was developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s by Apple, who called it FireWire. The 1394 interface is comparable to USB Network and Audio. Auto-detect or auto-detection ports are usually plug-and-play, but they offer another type of convenience. An auto-detect port may automatically determine what kind of device has been attached, but it also determines what purpose the port itself should have. For example, some sound cards allow plugging in several different types of audio speakers; then a dialogue box pops up on the computer screen asking whether the speaker is left, right, front, or rear for surround sound installations. The user's response determines the purpose of the port, which is physically a 1/8" tip-ring-sleeve mini jack. Some auto-detect ports can even switch between input and output based on context.
