OVERVIEW Thank you for purchasing Microlatch BIOFOB 1S, One Channel Remote Fingerprint Control. Microlatch BIOFOB 1S takes fingerprint products and solutions to the next level of security and convenience. The BIOFOB 1S has the capability to control a single device with a simple swipe of the finger, and will only transmit an access signal if the presented finger is identified as one enrolled in the BIOFOB 1S. This product is patented worldwide and offers flexible connectivity options via RF communications to compatible Microlatch Access Controllers/Receivers, which can activate other devices such as electric solenoids & locks, gates & motors, automotive & machinery, plus alarm panels. Before You Begin Please make sure you take the time to read through this operation guide BEFORE you begin the installation and configuration. The following user instructions will be invaluable for exploring the basics of the BIOFOB 1S and for understanding how to operate the BIOFOB 1S user interface confidently. 1
1. BIOFOB 1S OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS 1.1. Description The BIOFOB 1S has 5 LED status indicators. During operation the LED s indicate the following: BLUE LED Waiting for Finger RED LED Low Battery / Access Denied GREEN LED Correct Match/ Initial Master Finger Confirmation WHITE LED Admin Enrol MAGENTA User Enrol 1.2. General Operation ALL OFF Standby Mode The device is powered by pressing the single push-button. This action activates the electronic (capacitive) fingerprint swipe sensor and prepares the product to read the applied finger. This product works easiest reading the thumb or index finger. It may however be used with any other finger. The finger should be moved down the sensor in the same orientation and with light swiping and slightly added pressure directly over sensor for best performance. Do not apply a lot of pressure as this will usually result in a bad read and subsequent rejection. (Refer to figure in Chapter 2.3.). Please also note, any distortion of the fingerprint pattern by excessive pressure or moisture ingress can reduce the ability of the sensor to verify the pattern of each finger. Upon activation of the BIOFOB 1S the finger should be swiped down the sensor module face within 10 seconds of pushing the button. After the fingerprint is imaged by the sensor, a match is attempted against fingerprint template(s) stored in memory. If a match is found, the GREEN LED will light and the device will transmit a signal to the RF Controller unit. The BIOFOB 1S will then go to sleep and standby for the next fingerprint verification cycle. Following a no match or bad read of the finger, a RED LED will illuminate and no transmission will occur. 2
1 Identify the fingerprint swipe module. 2 Activate the BIOFOB 1S by pressing the single function button once, a BLUE LED will flash, waiting for a finger to be swiped. 3 Swipe any finger down the sensor within 10 seconds, and wait for verification response via LED indicators. 4 Keep swiping finger until either a RED or GREEN LED flashes. OR 5 If fingerprint matches and is verified a LED GREEN flashes briefly to indicate a match as the device then transmits the "Access granted" RF signal. Door will now unlock. 6 If fingerprint does not match or a bad read occurs, then RED LED flashes. Door will remain locked. If a bad read, user should try again and ensure there are no obstructions between finger and sensor and that any moisture is removed and repeat steps 2 to 5. 7 After each operation, BIOFOB 1S will go to sleep and will standby for the next fingerprint verification cycle when a function button is pressed. NOTE 1 Always try to swipe your finger downwards in the same way during each operation. Also only apply as much pressure as is necessary to obtain a good read. Swiping too hard will distort your fingerprint and cause rejection. Remove any foreign materials or moisture between finger and sensor. 3
1.3. Enrolment Microlatch TM BIOFOB 1S User Operation Guide Initially, the BIOFOB 1S contains no enrolled fingerprint templates in its memory. The device will allow enrolment for one hundred (100) fingers. The search and verification time required with fully populated fingerprint database of 100 templates will require a maximum 2.5 second response time. We recommend enrolment of more than one finger in case a fingerprint becomes cut or scratched, one finger from each hand Enrolment On First Power Up Enrolment is a MULTIPLE step procedure for each finger. This is necessary to obtain the best possible image of the fingerprint and thus ensure reliable operation. When you purchase the BIOFOB 1S new, there are no fingerprints in the database. The first TWO fingerprints enrolled will become Administrators, namely ADMIN 1 & ADMIN 2. 1 Identify the fingerprint swipe module. 2 Activate the BIOFOB 1S by pressing the single function button once. A WHITE LED will flash. This indicates the device is ready for enrolment and in an insecure state. 3 Swipe first finger (ADMIN 1) down the sensor repeatedly (approx 6-8 times) and wait for the GREEN LED to illuminate briefly. This indicates successful imaging of the fingerprint. Then repeat the same with a different finger (ADMIN 2) to complete the required TWO fingerprint process for Administrator enrollment 4 On the successful completion of enrollment of ADMIN 1 and ADMIN 2 fingers a GREEN LED will flash briefly 3 times then go into standby mode. Note 1 TWO Administrator fingers must be enrolled during first power up. The device will remain in Administrator Enrolment mode until it has TWO fingers. Note swipes is the average, some fingers may need more. If so, keep swiping until GREEN LED appears. 4
Enrolment when there are fingerprints in the database ONLY the TWO Administrators ( ADMIN 1 & 2 ) can access ENROLMENT MODE 1 An Administrator swipes finger as per normal operation. 2 Whilst the GREEN LED illuminates push the function button and hold down (1-2 secs) until the MAGENTA LED starts flashing. You are now in ENROLMENT MODE, release button. 3 Swipe new finger to be added down the sensor repeatedly (approx 6-8 times) and wait for the GREEN LED to illuminate briefly. This indicates successful imaging of the fingerprint. Note: Should the RED LED light appear, this means imaging has NOT been successful and in this case go back to Step 2 and commence enrolment again. 4 After successful enrolment of new finger ( GREEN LED ) the device will automatically go back into enrollment mode waiting for another finger. If no new finger is applied then enrollment mode will time out automatically after 10 seconds. 5 Repeat steps 2 to 3 for additional fingerprints (up to 100 fingerprints). After 100 fingerprints have been enrolled the BIOFOB 1S will automatically exit enrolment mode. 5
Learning BIOFOB 1S to a Microlatch RF Receiver or Control Subsystem Having completed enrolment of thumb/fingers you will now need to "learn" the BIOFOB 1S to the Microlatch RF Controller (REC-14, REC-18, REC-20 or REC-28) or OEM Subsystem. 1 Press the LEARN button on the Microlatch RF Controller (REC-14, REC-18 or REC-28) briefly. The RF Controller LED will commence flashing. 2 Press function button then swipe a registered finger for a GREEN LED for the BIOFOB 1S to send an "Access granted" signal. The RF Controller LED will momentarily stop flashing and the BIOFOB 1S code will be learned to the Receiver memory. Note When learning to a REC-20, transmit TWO (2) consecutive Access granted signals. 3 Press the LEARN button on the Microlatch RF Controller again briefly to extinguish the LED. Alternatively the learn mode will extinguish automatically after 30 seconds. 4 Subsequent activations of the BIOFOB 1S will now activate Output 1 on the Microlatch RF Receiver. Refer to RF Controller or Subsystem instructions. 6
1.4. Deleting Fingerprints (Erasure) The BIOFOB 1S has a very simple erasure sequence. It should be noted that only FULL erasure is possible with this device. You cannot erase individual fingerprints. It is also important to note that the BIOFOB 1S can only be erased by either of the administrator fingers; the first two enrolled fingers. This feature is a necessity for security and self-contained management. Additionally, erasure of the BIOFOB 1S fingerprints does not change its transmitted security code, thus ensuring that it will not be necessary to be learned to the Microlatch RF Controller again. This feature affords ultimate privileges to the administrator fingers, whilst maintaining maximum convenience and security. 1 Identify the finger print swipe sensor. 2 The procedure to erase device finger template is achieved by entering enrolment mode. Therefore a valid administrator finger is required; either of the first two fingers enrolled. Press the function button and swipe a valid administration finger ( GREEN LED ) and whilst the GREEN LED illuminates press and hold (1-2 sec s) the function button until the MAGENTA LED flashes. The BIOFOB 1S enters enrolment mode. 4 Swipe either of the administrator fingers down the sensor as normal (6-8 times) until the GREEN LED flashes, at this time push and hold the function button down (2-4 sec s) until a RED LED flashes quickly 3 times (erasure confirmed). 5 Further confirm erasure by pressing the function button for a flashing WHITE LED, the finger template storage area is now completely empty and ready for two new Administrator fingers. NB: The device is now in an insecure state. Note - Communication between the transmitter and any associated receiver or output control subsystem is not affected by this sequence. 7
2. CARE & MAINTENANCE Microlatch TM BIOFOB 1S User Operation Guide 2.1. Low Battery Condition Your BIOFOB 1S is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion polymer high quality 3.7 VDC battery. If the RED LED starts flashing when the function button is pushed then the device needs its battery recharged Charging the Battery. You can charge the BIOFOB 1S in two ways: 1. Connect the BIOFOB 1S to a USB port on your computer via the supplied USB Cable 2. Use a DC5V USB Power Adaptor, available separately For best results, the first time you use the device, allow it to charge for at least 3 hours or until the battery indicator shows the battery is fully charged. Red LED flash indicates low battery and when connected battery charging Green LED flash indicates battery fully charged NOTE The BIOFOB 1S features a non-volatile memory. All fingerprints will remain in the database even when batteries are completely drained or removed Tips for Maximum Performance The BIOFOB 1S is a robust and reliable device, however it will require the sensor area to be wiped occasionally with a tissue or damp cloth to remove finger residue. Should you notice that the rejection rate is increasing, cleaning the sensor will usually restore performance: 1. Clean the black fingerprint sensor area occasionally with a dry soft cloth or tissue. This is of particular importance when enrolling fingers. 2. Make sure your thumb or finger is dry and clean when using the BIOFOB 1S. The sensor does not respond well to wet fingers, moisture or cream on the module surface. 3. The BIOFOB 1S is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion polymer high quality 3.7 VDC battery. To ensure your BIOFOB 1S is always available for use, try and keep the unit in a water-free environment at all times. 4. Try to swipe your thumb/finger in the same downward way and manner each time the BIOFOB 1S is used. 8
