Market value props

VMA-Series Memory Array Manage complex database workloads without the complexity and cost of proprietary systems Better response times with high IOPS and low latency in a complete solid state offering Capacity and simplicity to consolidate large databases in a single server solution when paired with the DL980 G7 Flexibility of PCIe-direct for singleserver applications or SAN attach for shared storage 11

Outstanding transactional capability HP high performance database solution for Oracle OLTP For the most demanding enterprise-class workloads VMA-series Memory Array available from HP and supported on DL980 and Integrity systems Single solution from HP for online transactional processing (OLTP) workloads providing enhanced database performance HP ProLiant DL980 G7 servers with VMA-series Memory Arrays deliver greater performance at a lower price point compared to proprietary Oracle Exadata offerings.

Positioning

HP solid state solutions Lowest Price Footprint and Performance Capacity Highest Availability SAS SSD drives JBOD with SSD drives IO Accelerators PCIe SSD VMA PCIe SSD array performance VMA SAN SSD array shared storage P9500, 3PAR, Array with SSD Tiering VMA advantages: Capacity No need to re-architect your database, just put it all into solid state Footprint Only 3U per array, no special cabinets, no reinforced floors Performance PCI direct for lowest possible latencies, SAN for shared storage Simplicity Conceptually very simple, just attach and go Green lower power per TB over mechanical-disk storage arrays 14

Choosing the right solid state solution HP 3PAR and HP P9500 Arrays Top scalability and availability FC SAN-based solution shared by multiple servers Thin Provisioning optimizes SSD by only using physical space for non-zero data Tiered Storage software optimizes SSD by moving the most accessed data to higher performing storage tiers VMA-series Memory Arrays PCIe direct-connect option for best performance (x86 Win/Lin) FC SAN option for shared storage, x86 systems and Integrity HP-UX Good for larger database needs (5TB and larger) Easy scalability, just add more arrays HP PCIe IO Accelerator Great PCI-based performance (x86 Win/Lin) Lowest footprint all inside the server Suitable for single-server, small databases (less than 5TB) Must add separate availability solution (s/w mirroring, data replication) HP Solid State Drives Convenient way to add SSD Faster than mechanical disks Protected with Smart Array RAID and hot-pluggable 15

DRAM PICe SSD SSDs Emulating HDDs 15K Disk Array SATA Array HP VMA-series Memory Arrays New fully solid-state storage tier 1 PB 100 TB 10 TB PCIe-DC 25-75µs SAN-GW µs VERY FAST No seek times Non-volatile Green 1 TB 100 GB 8,000µs (2 orders of magnitude) 10 GB 1 GB Multi-core CPU Processor Cache ns 1µs 25µs 200µs 3ms 8ms 20ms TIME (Access Delay)

Who uses the VMA-series Memory Array? Customers who Are seeking better I/O response time for applications Have considered internal server solid state, but found it didn t have enough capacity to hold much more than log files Want to share storage among multiple servers Are not necessarily a database expert, not wanting to alter their database structure for a specific storage solution Do not want to invest in (another) large storage array, even if it offers some solid state 17

Applications for VMA systems I/O bound and shared storage applications Increase IO performance Run Oracle faster without database migration or platform upgrade or the cost of Exadata Batch update jobs reduced from nights and weekends to just hours Fast transaction processing with entire database in solid state Metadata storage for very large file systems, without the long read latencies of hard disks Tier 0 fast storage for your active data set Multidimensional data where accesses are not sequential 18

VMA considerations VMA direct connect is not possible with blades (can t bring the PCI cable to a blade mezz card) Consider IO Accelerators for blades where PCI direct is required VMA direct connect is not supported with HP-UX Use FC SAN connect with HP-UX instead Fixed capacities, minimum size is 5TB Consider IO Accelerators and HP solid state disks where smaller capacity is sufficient ProLiant DL980 is the only supported ProLiant There are no plans to support other ProLiant systems with VMA. ProLiant servers support other solid state options: IO Accelerators and HP solid state disks No additional S/W availability solutions Consider 3PAR and HP9500 systems with solid state tiering where more availability is required 19

Product details

VMA excels at sustained IOPS performance Flash erase/writes are slow and eventually wear out the memory Solid State solutions compensate with wear leveling - using excess flash and virtualized block addresses to minimize the number of erases you have to do repeatedly on any one bit However, at some point, you have to clean up and reuse the stale memory, just to regain some capacity Poor housekeeping can result in wildly uneven IOPS performance over time VMA systems have built-in wear-leveling that distributes the housekeeping so that you always have consistent, sustainable, IOPS performance 23

VMA Performance IOPS (4K block) VMA PCIe-direct Up to 350K IOPS Read Up to 250K IOPS Write Bandwidth 1.4GB/s 1.4GB/s Latency Less than 100 usec* 80uS Read 25uS Write PCIe-direct compared to SAN-attach Same IOPS and Bandwidth VMA FC SAN (8Gb FC Fabric) Up to 350K IOPS Read Up to 250K IOPS Write Less than 200 usec* SAN-attach latency increases a tiny amount (see next slide) * 1/100th of rotating hard disks 24

VMA latency VMA PCIe-direct attach, latency under 100uSec VMA SAN-attach, latency under 200uSec Typical 15Krpm hard disk rotational latency mSec 5mSec VMA latency is a fraction of traditional rotating hard disks Less than 100 microseconds of latency in PCIe-direct attach operation 80 microsecond Reads 25 microsecond Writes Latency Less than 200 microseconds of latency in SAN-attach operation 25

VMA SAN Gateway user interface Intuitive web GUI for SAN Gateway provides at-aglance system status Flash Wear Performance Configuration Security Also supports a command-line interface, and direct terminal connection 26

Constraints when considering any solid state NAND Flash technology has a maximum usage cycle, after which no further erases or writes can be done. This is referred to as the wear on the product. Because of this wear, vendors treat solid state products as consumables. This wear appears to the user as a slowly diminishing capacity over time Fortunately, wear accumulates slowly. Even with an artificial load of 100% continuous erase/write cycles, the maximum usage will take years to reach. With typical use, users can expect to have many years without diminished performance or significantly diminished capacity. Maximum wear varies by product refer to the product technical data sheet for further information. Because the HP VMA has individual hot-swappable memory modules, the lifetime of the product can be extended if noticeable wear starts to occur early 27

VMA compared to in-server solid state devices VMA, since external to server, doesn t add to the power and cooling burden of the server like with in-server SSD options. Very large scale-up capacity. Don t restrict your solution to just fast log files or only applications with small databases. Shareable storage. Can t do that with an in-server storage solution. Never get caught with your data captive inside a server which is down. VMA SAN Gateway adds FC reliability, availability and additional features such as scale-out server connectivity, host multi-pathing, load balancing, failover, etc. Garbage collection & grooming is done in hardware on memory modules in a non-blocking manner instead of with a big, complex software host driver that adds significant memory and CPU utilization overhead. Built-in v-raid 4+1 done via hardware in the array no need to do use software RAID on host server incurring additional server overhead Solutions which keep a copy of meta-data inside server can have up to a 20 minute rebuild at server boot time if not clean shutdown (crash) 33 33

VMA arrays compared to hard disk arrays Lower latency: 10,000% faster (50-200us) Greater aggregate random IOPs: 4,000% faster (350K IOPS) Denser footprint: up to 10TB (SLC) in just 3U Scalable to many Terabytes or even Petabytes of RAIDed solid-state, non-volatile storage Faster application performance: Immediate performance improvements - 5 to 50x Simple non-invasive installation (no reprogramming) Consistent, predictable random-access R/W performance Green: 80 to 99% reduction in power 34
