1 RAID Controller Installation Guide Document Number Second Edition March 2003 The RAID Controller Installation Guide explains how to install and configure a RAID Controller in an Omvia Media Server. It also explains where to locate additional information about the RAID Controller. The Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAID) Controller is installed in an Omvia Media Server to provide redundant disk capacity. The RAID Controller distributes data across a set of disk drives and allows the data to be recovered if one of the disk drives fails. The audience for this document is personnel responsible for installing and maintaining Omvia Media Server hardware. 4 Function of the RAID Controller The Adaptec TM product name for the RAID Controller is SCSI RAID 2100S TM. The function of the RAID Controller (shown in Figure 1 below) is to combine multiple disk drives into an array of disk drives to obtain performance, capacity, and reliability that exceeds that of a single large drive. The array of drives appears to the host computer as a single logical drive. Figure 1. Arrangement of Boards RAID Level 5 The RAID Controller is capable of supporting RAID Levels 0, 1, 0/1, 5, and 0/5. However, Intervoice supports only RAID Level 5 at this time. RAID Level 5 allows data to be striped (divided) block by block across multiple disks. Parity data is also spread out over multiple disks. 9 Installation Checklist The checklist below provides a general guide as you install the RAID Controller: RAID Controller Installation Checklist Unpack the RAID Controller Board Verify all equipment has been received. Remove all equipment from the box. Determine whether any equipment was damaged in shipment. Save all boxes for exchanging components during upgrades. Configure the CPU BIOS Disable the CPU on-board SCSI controller. Install the RAID Controller Board Install the board. Connect the SCSI cable. Connect the adapter cable. Configure the Adaptec RAID Controller Setup Select the RAID level. Select the disk drives. Save the new configuration. Restart the system. Obtain Device Drivers For Windows NT, create the device driver diskette from the Drivers\SCSI\Adaptec-Raid directory on the Windows NT Server w/sp6a CD-ROM. OR For Windows 2000, create the device driver diskette from the Drivers\Scsi_Dpti2o_Raid_2000s directory on the Windows 2000 w/sp3 CD-ROM , Second Edition RAID Controller Installation Guide 9

11 Configuring the CPU BIOS The on-board SCSI controller on the CPU must be disabled for the RAID Controller to function properly. For information on disabling the on-board SCSI controller for your specific CPU, refer to the CPU Board Installation Guide. Installing the RAID Controller Board The RAID Controller can be installed in a PCI slot close to the CPU on an Omvia Media Server. To install the RAID Controller board, follow these steps: 1 Turn the Omvia Media Server power off. 2 Remove the cover and set it aside. 3 Locate a PCI slot close to the CPU in the Omvia Media Server chassis. 4 Install the RAID Controller board in the PCI slot by placing the gold-fingered connectors above the slot and pressing firmly until the board is fully seated. 5 Install the board retaining screw at the top end of the board to secure the board in the chassis , Second Edition RAID Controller Installation Guide 11

12 6 The RAID Controller uses the SCSI cable that is normally connected to the CPU board. To connect the SCSI cable to the RAID Controller: a b Detach the SCSI cable from the CPU board. Attach the SCSI cable to the J10 connector (Figure 3) on the SCSI RAID Controller. J10 connector Figure 3. J10 Connector (SCSI) If your system does not have the adapter cable, disregard step 7 on page 13. The activity light is a convenience, but is not essential for proper system function. The 4-pin connector on the adapter cable (shown in Figure 4) controls the H-Disk activity light on the Omvia Media Server. 13 7 To attach the adapter cable to the RAID Controller: a b Detach the adapter cable from the P12 connector on the CPU board. Plug the adapter cable into the P6 connector (pins 1 and 2) on the RAID Controller, as shown in Figure 5. Pin 1 Pin 2 P6 connector Figure 5. 14 Configuring the Adaptec RAID Controller Setup For more information about RAID levels, refer to the Adaptec documentation. The Adaptec RAID Controller setup configures the RAID level and the disk drives to be used for RAID. This topic explains how to configure the RAID Controller setup to use RAID Level 5. To configure the RAID Controller setup, follow these steps: 1 During the power-on self test at system startup, press <Ctrl><A>. The Adaptec menu appears. 2 To navigate to the right pane (the SmartROM Configuration tab), press <Tab>. 3 Use the arrow keys to navigate through the screen. Select Default to accept the default settings, and press <Enter>. 4 Press <Tab> to navigate back to the left pane. 14 RAID Controller Installation Guide , Second Edition

15 5 Select RAID > Create from the menu. Do this by pressing <Alt R>, then press <C>. The RAID type window appears. To reach the commands on the Adaptec menu bar, press <Alt><highlighted red letter>. To choose menu options, select the first letter of the option. 6 Select RAID 5 (Fault tolerance, Higher capacity), and ensure that 32 KB appears as the Stripe size. If it does not, use the arrow keys to adjust the amount. 7 Select Ok, and press <Enter>. The Eligible Devices tab appears. 8 Use the arrow keys to navigate to each drive that appears, then press the space bar to select each one. Follow the sequence below: <space bar><down arrow> <space bar><down arrow> <space bar><down arrow> When all the drives are selected, check marks appear to their left , Second Edition RAID Controller Installation Guide 15

16 9 Press <Tab> to navigate to Done, and press <Enter>. The SmartROM Configuration tab reappears. Notice the new RAID choice that appears in the left pane: (0,0,0,0)RAID-5 10 With the new RAID option highlighted, select File > Set System Configuration from the menu. (Press <Alt><F>, then <S>.) The Configuration Changes window appears, with the message The configuration will not fully take effect until after a reboot is performed. 11 Select Ok and press <Enter>. 12 Select File > Exit from the menu. (Press <Alt><F>, then <X>.) 13 At the message, Are you sure you want to exit?, select Ok and press <Enter>. 14 On the next system startup, press <Ctrl><A>. The system builds the disk array. Projected Wait Time Building the RAID is a slow process. Depending on your CPU and hard drive sizes, this build usually takes around four hours. 16 RAID Controller Installation Guide , Second Edition

17 Obtaining Device Drivers Windows NT Windows 2000 Device driver files for the RAID Controller are located on the Windows NT w/sp6a CD-ROM or the Windows 2000 w/sp3 CD-ROM. Driver files differ according to the operating system installed. To create a floppy disk containing the Windows NT device driver files, follow these steps: 1 On a different computer than the one where the RAID is being built, insert the Windows NT Server w/sp 6a CD-ROM into the drive. 2 Navigate to the <CD drive>:\drivers\scsi\adaptec-raid directory. This directory contains the device driver files. 3 Copy the entire contents of the directory to a diskette. You will use this disk to supply the device drivers when you install Windows NT (see page 18). To create a floppy disk containing the Windows 2000 device driver files, follow these steps: 1 On a different computer than the one where the RAID is being built, insert the Windows 2000 Server w/sp 3 CD-ROM into the drive. 2 Navigate to the <CD drive>:\drivers\scsi_dpti2o_raid_2000s directory. This directory contains the device driver files. 3 Copy the entire contents of the directory to a diskette. You will use this disk to supply the device drivers when you install Windows 2000 (see page 19) , Second Edition RAID Controller Installation Guide 17

18 Installing Windows NT To install Windows NT, follow these steps: 1 Create the device driver diskette for Windows NT (see page 17). Follow the steps in Chapter 3 of the Loading System Software (Windows NT) document as you are completing the steps in this topic for full details of the operating system installation. 2 Load the boot disks for Windows NT. System setup starts automatically. 3 When the Windows NT Setup screen appears, press <Enter> to continue. 4 Press <Enter> so the system can detect any mass storage devices on your system. 5 At the next screen, press <S> to select To specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-ROM drives, or special disk controllers... A screen displays the message, You have asked to specify an additional SCSI adapter, CD-ROM drive, or special disk controller for use with Windows NT. 6 Ensure that Other (Requires disk provided by a hardware manufacturer) is highlighted. 7 Insert the Adaptec device driver diskette (see page 17), and press <Enter>. The next screen displays the message You have chosen to install a SCSI adapter, CD-ROM drive, or special disk controller provided by a hardware manufacturer. The selection defaults to Adaptec I20 Raid Host Adapter for NT Press <Enter> to select the default. 18 RAID Controller Installation Guide , Second Edition

19 Installing Windows Follow the prompts to continue loading Windows NT. When formatting completes, you are prompted again for the Adaptec device driver diskette. 10 Insert the Adaptec device driver diskette (see page 17), and install the appropriate device drivers. To install Windows 2000, follow these steps: 1 Create the device driver diskette for Windows 2000 (see page 17). Follow the steps in Chapter 2 of the Loading System Software (Windows 2000) document as you are completing the steps in this topic for full details of the operating system installation. System setup starts automatically. See the note below. Important At the initial Windows 2000 Setup screen, watch closely for a message on the bottom bar that says, Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver. If you do not press F6, you will not receive the necessary prompts later in the installation and will have to reboot and begin again. 2 Press <F6>. The next screen appears several minutes later. At this screen, the following message appears: Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter. Currently, Setup will load support for the following mass storage devices: <none> You must now specify the disk controller by reading it from the manufacturer s diskette , Second Edition RAID Controller Installation Guide 19

20 3 Press <S> to detect the controller from the diskette. A screen displays the message, You have asked to specify an additional SCSI adapter, CD-ROM drive, or special disk controller for use with Windows Press <Enter> to continue. A screen displays the message, Please insert the disk labeled Manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk into Drive A: *Press ENTER when ready. 5 Insert the device driver diskette (page 17), and press <Enter>. The system detects the Adaptec I20 RAID Host Adapters for Windows Press <Enter>. The previous screen reappears, and <none> is replaced with the Adaptec I20 RAID Host Adapter. 7 Press <Enter> to continue. 8 Insert Setup Boot Disk #3 and continue to follow the installation steps from the Loading System Software (Windows 2000) document. Because you will be prompted to insert the device driver diskette again, keep it nearby. 9 Further into the installation, the system prompts you to accept an unsigned driver. Click Yes to accept it. The rest of the procedure is identical to the installation in the Loading System Software (Windows 2000) document. 20 RAID Controller Installation Guide , Second Edition

21 Installing Storage Manager and Storage Manager Pro Adaptec s Storage Manager Pro provides an interface to Adaptec RAID configuration while the operating system is running. Storage Manager must be installed before Storage Manager Pro. If hardware should fail, the system emits a loud beep until the condition is corrected. Storage Manager Pro can control the beep. To install Adaptec Storage Manager Pro, follow these steps: 1 Insert the Adaptec Storage Manager CD-ROM. 2 When the first window appears, select Storage Manager from the list, and continue to accept the defaults. 3 Restart the system. 4 Re-insert the Adaptec Storage Manager Pro CD-ROM and let it auto-run. 5 When the first window appears, select Storage Manager Pro from the list and continue to accept the defaults. 6 Restart the system , Second Edition RAID Controller Installation Guide 21

22 Using Storage Manager and Storage Manager Pro If an alarm should begin alerting you to a hardware failure, Storage Manager Pro allows you to shut off the alarm. In addition, Storage Manager Pro can identify which disk in the array is experiencing problems. When you give this information to Intervoice technical support, they can issue you a replacement based on the criteria you provide from Storage Manager. To use Storage Manager Pro, follow these steps: 1 From the desktop, select Start > Programs > Adaptec Storage Manager Pro. The Adaptec Storage Manager Pro Login window appears. 2 Enter the following: Login Name: Administrator Password: adaptec (all lowercase) 3 Click Login. The Storage Manager Pro System Browser window appears. 4 In the ADAPTEC 2100S (HBA) area, click Silence Alarm. 22 RAID Controller Installation Guide , Second Edition
