Important 2. General Notes 1. Installation is not complete until you have performed the Final Hardware Checks listed in this document. Physical Installation The controller is designed to be mounted on flat (or nearly-flat) surfaces while allowing cables to pass underneath. Please note the acceptable temperature range for the controller as the controller generates some heat this means that the ambient temperature where the controller is installed can rise. Good Installation Practice Fit an external PSU close to the controller. Connect the PSU 0V and 12V terminals to the ACU using braidscreened cable. To minimize interference, firmly connect the braid screen to BOTH the main earth point in the PSU AND to the chassis plate of the controller. All communications and reader cabling runs should be in screened cable and at least 2 metres long for full EMC protection and maximum reliability. Always run the power to the lock in its own separate cable. Fit the supplied suppression at the lock NOT at the ACU (Access Control Unit) In general the cable screens should be EARTHED AT THE ACU ONLY. The one exception to this rule is if the item (e.g. reader, egress, lock etc.) is mounted on an earthed metal surface. In this instance EARTH THE CABLE THERE and NOT at the ACU. The communications cable should be earthed on the incoming side only, that is the cable that is bringing communications in from the computer or previous ACU. The communications cable leaving the ACU should ideally be taped off. (This prevents earth loops). Keep all unshielded cable runs and earth/drain wire pig tails as short as possible. To minimize exposed earth braid, never remove more cable sheathing than necessary. Grounding This photograph shows how cable screens should be fed through the slots in the chassis plate. It is important that the cable screens are tightly gripped by the slot a thin single cable screen can be folded back on itself and twisted to thicken it, or it can be wrapped round the metal between two slots. Cable Specifications Device Cable description Belden type Power supply Braid-screened, 2-core N/a Reader Screened, 6-core, 7/0.2; max 150m length 9730 RS485 communications Screened, 4-core data cable; max 1200m length in system 9729 RS232 communications Screened, 3-core, 7/0.2; max 1200m length in system N/a TCP/IP communications CatV cable: max 100m length N/a Door sense Unscreened pair N/a Exit button Unscreened pair N/a Other inputs Unscreened pair N/a Lock Unscreened pair; sufficient for load N/a Other relays Unscreened pair; sufficient for load N/a
3. Connections for 1 door with 1 reader
4. Connections for 1 door with 2 readers
5. Connections for 2 doors with 2, 3 or 4 readers
1. Reader 6. Notes on installation of Door and Reader components Use only shielded cable between the reader and the controller. 2. Exit button (optional) This is not needed when there is a reader on each side of the door. 3. Door Sensor For use where you want to know when the door is opened normally, forced open, or left open too long. Contacts can be either open or closed when the door is open the controller can be programmed for either type. 4. Lock The connections shown are for a fail-safe lock (i.e. power off = unlocked). If you use a fail-secure type, connect the power supply positive to NC (normally closed) instead of NO (normally open). If the lock has a higher rating that the lock relay (2A), use a secondary relay. IMPORTANT: a suppressor MUST be fitted at each lock. Two suitable suppressors are provided with each controller and look like this: 5. Lock Power Supply This is a 1N4003 diode. These are suitable for DC locks ONLY the suppressor must be connected across the two wires as close to the lock as possible, with the white band end connected to the Positive side of the supply. For maximum reliability, we recommend the use of separate power supplies for locks. In most cases however, using one supply for the controller and the lock(s) it controls will cause no problems provided the supply has sufficient current output, and the cable distances do not result in significant voltage drops. If in doubt, use one supply for the controller, and one supply for each lock. 6. Controller Power Supply The controller power supply requires battery back-up in order to comply with CE immunity regulations. The supply needs to be capable of supplying enough power for the controller plus readers: a 1A power supply is adequate unless 4 Optica readers/keypads are installed together with a TCP/IP module, when a 1.5A supply will be needed. IMPORTANT: two suppressors must be fitted across the mains input to the power supply. Suitable suppressors are provided with each controller: This is a 470 pf (pico-farad) Class Y disc ceramic capacitor rated at 240V AC. Connect one suppressor between Line and Ground, and one suppressor between Neutral and Ground.
7. Communications Serial communications: first controller within 15m of PC 2 3 Serial communications: first controller further than 15m from PC Note: 4-core RS485 cable is often cheaper and more easily obtained than 2-core. If you use 4-core cable, connect the cores together in pairs, using one core from each pair do not leave cores un-connected. TCP/IP (dedicated link) TCP/IP (existing network) As for Dedicated link above BUT use a standard patch lead from the TCP/IP port to a convenient network point.
7. Inputs Spare inputs are capable of wither non-supervised or supervised use. For supervision, resistors are needed: 1-resistor supervision for shortcircuit tamper detection 2-resistor supervision for shortcircuit and open-circuit tamper detection 8. Relays All Relays are dry-contact change-over type, rated at 30V, 2 A. Devices which have inductive loads (i.e. anything with a coil, such as a secondary relay, bell or motor) must be fitted with suppression at the device. If in doubt, fit a suppressor. A DC device can be fitted with a diode (IN4003 or equivalent) as described for the lock suppressor described above. 9. Final hardware checks The following quick and easy tests will confirm that the controller, reader(s), lock(s) and exit buttons are correctly connected. Testing any door sensors requires the software to be running and will be checked as part of the software setup. Note: if the PC software is already running, disconnect the communications to the controller by unplugging the 6-way connector. With the power off, set the unit number of the controller to 0 using the rotary switch see 3 at right. Power up the unit. Observe the 5V On light (see 4 at right) comes on. The green Rx light (see 2 at right) flashes a few times then starts a cycle of 9-seconds on, 9-seconds off. The red LED on each reader flashes continuously (2 flashes per second). Present a card to any reader. The flashing rate of the red LED (on all readers) changes to once every 2 seconds. Present the card again to any reader both Relays 1 and 2 operate for 5 seconds (regardless of the number of doors the controller will be controlling). Any locks connected to these relays are unlocked. Press any exit button the associated lock is unlocked for 5 seconds. Change the rotary switch to the required number. Re-connect the communications link if necessary if the PC software is running, the Tx and Rx lights will start flashing rapidly. 10. Software Installation 1. Ensure that your computer meets the required specification. 2. Before starting the installation, ensure that you are logged in as a user with full Administrator rights and close any applications that are running. 3. Check that File and Printer sharing are enabled. Click on Start: Control Panel: Network. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties. Look for File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft networks in the list if this is not in the list then click on Install; if it is in the list then ensure it is checked. 4. Insert the CD into a CD-ROM drive : if the installation does not start within a few seconds, click on Start, then Run, and type d:/setup.exe (if your CD-ROM drive is not d :/ then substitute the correct letter) into the Open: field and click OK. 5. Follow the on-screen instructions. Wächter GmbH Sicherheitssysteme Alte Ricklinger Str. 3, Garbsen, Germany Tel: Fax: info@waechtergroup.de
