2 Cautions and Warnings Cautions and Warnings READ AND SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS- Follow the instructions in this installation manual. These instructions must be followed to avoid damage to this product and associated equipment. Product operation and reliability depend upon proper installation. DO NOT INSTALL ANY SIMPLEX PRODUCT THAT APPEARS DAMAGED- Upon unpacking your Simplex product, inspect the contents of the carton for shipping damage. If damage is apparent, immediately file a claim with the carrier and notify an authorized Simplex product supplier. ELECTRICAL HAZARD - Disconnect electrical field power when making any internal adjustments or repairs. All repairs should be performed by a representative or authorized agent of your local Simplex product supplier. EYE SAFETY HAZARD - Under certain fiber optic application conditions, the optical output of this device may exceed eye safety limits. Do not use magnification (such as a microscope or other focusing equipment) when viewing the output of this device. STATIC HAZARD - Static electricity can damage components. Handle as follows: Ground yourself before opening or installing components. Prior to installation, keep components wrapped in anti-static material at all times. FCC RULES AND REGULATIONS PART 15 - This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense. SYSTEM REACCEPTANCE TEST AFTER SOFTWARE CHANGES - To ensure proper system operation, this product must be tested in accordance with NFPA , Chapter 7 after any programming operation or change in site-specific software. Reacceptance testing is required after any change, addition or deletion of system components, or after any modification, repair or adjustment to system hardware or wiring. All components, circuits, system operations, or software functions known to be affected by a change must be 100% tested. In addition, to ensure that other operations are not inadvertently affected, at least 10% of initiating devices that are not directly affected by the change, up to a maximum of 50 devices, must also be tested and proper system operation verified. 2

3 Converter Overview The 8-Volt DC-to-DC Converter is an option card that mounts within a 4100ES, 4100U, 4100, or 4120 Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP). This card takes 24 VDC power from a system switching power supply and converts it to 8 VDC. The Converter is used when additional 8V power is required, for example when more than four Style 4 Physical Bridges are used. Power Requirements The 8-Volt DC-to-DC Converter has the following power requirements. Voltage: 24 C (PCB) Black, Connector position V (PCB) Red, Connector position 2 Current: 1.5 A max. at 24V Environmental Requirements Operating temperature: 32 F to 120 F (0 C to 49 C). Humidity: 10% to 93% relative humidity at up to 90 F (32 C). 3

4 Mounting the 8 VDC Converter Overview The converter board and terminal block attachment are mounted onto a mounting plate. In the 4100/4120, the mounting plate gets attached to the side of an expansion bay with four screws so that the terminal block faces the front. In the 4100U/4100ES, the module must be attached to the backplane of an expansion bay. Mounting into the 4100/4120 Back Box The following instructions apply to non-4100u/4100es installations only. If you are installing the converter into the 4100U/4100ES, skip to the next section. 1. Remove AC power at the power source. 2. Locate the expansion bay that contains the Physical Bridge and remove the screw holding the retainer restraint to the card retainer and set it aside. 3. Remove the two card retainer hinge pins and remove the card retainer. Set the card retainer and pins aside. 4. Remove two screws holding the left expansion bay bracket (Figure 1) and remove the bracket. Set the two screws aside. Bracket Screws Left Expansion Bay Bracket Figure 1. 5 Mounting the 8 VDC Converter, Continued Mounting into the 4100/4120 Back Box 5. Using three Screws and Lockwashers (supplied), secure the 8-Volt DC-to-DC Converter to the Expansion Bay End Bracket. (See Figure 2.) Note: The holes on the converter bracket may not align with the holes on some older versions of the Expansion Bay End Bracket. In this case, you must drill and tap holes for 6-32 mounting screws in the Expansion Bay End Bracket before mounting the converter. 7 Wiring Wiring to Expansion Bay Modules: Non-4100U/4100ES 9 10 IMPORTANT: The bay must be powered via the Converter only. Make certain no other power or comms are wired to the bay. 1. Harness Assembly plugs into pins 1-4 of P3. 2. Expansion Bay End Bracket Converter Assembly , rated for 3 A at 8 V nominal. 4. Harness Assembly When a cabinet is used as a hub for physical bridges, a dedicated physical bridge bay is required if four or more Style 4 physical bridges are used. A dedicated physical bridge bay is also required if three or more Style 7 physical bridges are used. 6. A Style 7 physical bridge requires two slots and a Style 4 physical bridge takes one of the eight available slots. A maximum of six Style 4 bridges or four Style 7 bridges can be mounted in a bay. 7. A combination of Style 4 and Style 7 bridges can be mounted in the same bay. 8. The bay shown in this figure is dedicated for physical bridges only. Other 4120 slaves (including network interface cards) may not be installed since slave comms are not wired to the bay. 9. When using the A tap of the CPU power supply, connect the RED wire of the Harness Assembly to TB2-12. Connect the BLACK wire of the Harness Assembly to TB When using the B tap of the CPU power supply, connect the RED wire of the Harness Assembly to TB2-8. 8 Wiring, Continued Wiring to Expansion Bay Modules: 4100U/4100ES IMPORTANT: The bay must be powered via the Converter only. Make certain no other power or comms are wired to the bay. 1. Harness Assembly plugs into pins 1-4 of P3. 2. No modules in this bay connect to the PDI. 3. Converter Assembly , rated for 3 A at 8 V nominal. 4. Configure SPS NAC as Point Type AUXPWR. When using SPS NACs for card power, do not wire remote devices to SPS NACs. 5. A Style 7 physical bridge requires two slots and a Style 4 physical bridge takes one of the six remaining slots. A maximum of six Style 4 bridges or three Style 7 bridges can be mounted in a bay. 6. A combination of Style 4 and Style 7 bridges can be mounted in the same bay. 7. The bay shown in this figure is dedicated for physical bridges only. Other 4100 slaves (including network interface cards) may not be installed since slave comms are not wired to the bay. Figure 6.
