1 Global Technical Operations Technical News Bulletin GTO, January 2012 SpeedLink USB cable issue. Unfortunately we have found issues with some batches of the USB cables (P/N ) use with the SpeedLink HI interface box connecting it to our Fitting Software (FSW). The bad cables result in a situation where the fitting software fails to identify any Hearing Instrument (HI) interface and hereby are not able to connect to the Hearing Instrument. Depending on the FSW used the error message for failing connection will look different. For Aventa3, SolusPro and Appraise2 the error message will detect no HI connected. For Aventa2 and Solus and Appraise the error message will also show no HI connected: Global Technical Operations Page 1 of 6

The only difference you might be able to notice is that the bad cables are a bit glossier than the good ones. However the correct way to sort out bad cables is to test them electrically. This can easily be done with using the SpeedLink test contained in all our FSW applications. bad cable good cable Correct way to check the cables. To check if a P/N USB cable is working correct with the SpeedLink is to connect it to a GN fitting software application and utilize the SpeedLink test. A known good SpeedLink unit is required to perform the test. The SpeedLink test function can be found in the fitting SW. For Aventa3, SolusPro and Appraise2 it is located in the main menu > Edit > Preferences. The below shown example is for Aventa 3. 1) Connect the cable to the known good SpeedLink and to the USB connection on the PC running the fitting SW used. 2) Turn on the PC and Open the fitting SW. 3) In the Main menu select Edit 4) Select Preferences in the drop down menu Global Technical Operations Page 2 of 6

The SW is now ready to test the SpeedLink hardware including the USB cable.

4 6) In the Default Programming Interface field select SpeedLink. 7) Click on the [Test] button to start the SpeedLink Test module. The SpeedLink test module open a Test SpeedLink window. The SW is now ready to test the SpeedLink hardware including the USB cable. Since the SpeedLink unit itself is a known god devices the test will focus on the cable. The SpeedLink test SW will try to communicate with the SpeedLink. If the connection is found the Test SpeedLink window will show this result, and the USB cable has passed the test.

Multiple cables can be tested by clicking the [Test] button again. (repeat point 8) and 9). It is not necessary to restart the SpeedLink Test module.

5 The SpeedLink test SW will try to communicate with the SpeedLink. If the connection is found the Test SpeedLink window will show this result, and the USB cable has passed the test. If the cable is not good the SpeedLink Test SW cannot communicate with the SpeedLink unit and it will show no hardware or driver found. The USB cable cannot be used. 9) The test is now be finalized. Multiple cables can be tested by clicking the [Test] button again. (repeat point 8) and 9). It is not necessary to restart the SpeedLink Test module.
