Ground the instrument Make sure the instrument is grounded properly before every use. Connect and disconnect properly. Connect the probe output to the measurement instrument before connecting the probe to the generator. Disconnect the probe from the generator before disconnecting the probe from the measurement instrument. Keep away from live circuits. Avoid open circuitry. Do not touch connections or components when power is present. Do not operate with suspected failures. Refer to qualified service personnel. Indoor use only. Do not operate in wet/damp environment. Keep product surfaces dry and clean. Do not operate the product in explosive, wet or damp atmospheres. Do not modify the instrument. 3

4 About the Probe Calibrator The calibrator KHT 6000 C is used for HF- Adjustment of High Voltage Probes and their respective calibrators. Functionality: The functionality of the KHT 6000 C is described by the simplyfied diagram ( Fig. 1). Probe Calibrator KHT 6000 C creates squarewave pulses with steep rising flanks and voltages of 500 to 6000 V. The risetime of these flanks is smaller than 45 ns (10% - 90%) with a duration of 1 ms. The Output Voltage is applied to a 4 mm socket at the inner part of the red Probe recepticle. The 1 V steps of the adjustable Output Voltage are digitally displayed. With the ability to be fully calibrated the KHT 6000 C can be subjected to inspections of measuring and testing equipment as international standards, such as ISO 9000 suggest. The ground connector of the probe has to be connected to earth ground. The charging voltage can be taken off at the BNC connector [14] and measured by an dedicated DVM. The attenuation ratio at the BNC connector is 1000 : 1. The outlet is buffered by an OP-amplifier. Output current is 10 ma max. A 200 Ω Fuse secures the outlet, and is probably destroyed in case of a short circuit. It has to be replaced in this case. Simplified Diagram of the Probe Calibrator KHT 6000 C: Fig. 1 4

7 Operation Getting startet: 1. Connect the KHT 6000 C to mains using the power cord included in the scope of delivery. [17] 2. Connect your HV-Probe to the output connector [13] and to ground. [16] 3. Adjust the Probe-/Attenuation ratio. 4. At the Triggersocket [15] a Trigger Pulse of 5V, 50R can be taken off. 5. Turn on the instrument at the backside [17]. Note that the Output Display [1] blinks shortly and shows "0V" afterwards. Note: The Instrument is in "OFF" mode still, indicated by "Control-LED" [10] and the "HV-OFF" LED [12]. There is no voltage present at the outlet [13]. Adjustment Procedure: 1. Use Rotary Switch [2] to set the desired Output Voltage and press it within 3 seconds to confirm. The Output Voltage is shown at the display [1] until confirmed. The Display will default to "0V" afterwards. 2. Start the Adjustment Procedure by holding down the Pulse-Switch [3]. You may press "Lock" [7] to set the unit to pulse continuously, even after releasing the Pulse-Switch [3]. End this mode by pressing "OFF"[9] or "Lock"[7] again. Note that "HV-OFF" [12] and "Control-LED" [10] are expiring, while "HV-ON" [11] and "Control-LED" [4] are lit. The display [1] shows the voltage applied. The unit stays in pulse-mode as long as Pulse-Switch [3] is pressed or locked. During this operation the preset voltage is present at the outlet [13]. By releasing the "Pulse"-Switch [13] or in case of continuous pulses pressing "OFF" [9] or "LOCK" [7], the operation is stopped, reverting the Status -LEDs to their former state. 3. Set the Triggerlevel of the scope to a fitting value. (e.g: 50% of the pulse amplitude) 4. Adjust the probe. Risetime should be < 45 ns (between 10% - 90%) Additional Notes: Voltage Refresh: While the unit is pulsing continuously, you may change the Output-Voltage using the Rotary Switch [2]. Confirm the newly desired value by pressing the Rotary Switch within 3 seconds. Dedicated DVM: For an exact Probe Adjustment, DC High Voltage may be read more accurately with an external DVM at the "1000:1" BNC socket [14] at the front of the unit.
