GENERAL APPLICATIONS INSTALLATION TESTING CUSTOMER SERVICES WARRANTY AND REPAIRS SPECIFICATIONS ORDERING INFORMATION GENERAL 1.1 The NAC RM23-20X is a 28-slot, 23 inch rack mountable housing that is designed to house up to type HDSL/T1 modules. The unit can be used to house up to 14 (type- 400) modules by only populating the odd numbered slots (i.e. 1, 3, 5 etc.). This assembly is designed to be mounted in a 23 inch rack assembly. This unit is ideal for applications between the facility multiplexer and the customer point of demarcation. The RM23-20X can be powered either with a plug-in power supply or external power via the supplied terminal block. 1.2 Whenever this product or document is changed, it will be reflected in this paragraph. 1.3 The RM23-20X provides the following features and capabilities: Mounting designed to house up to Type or 14 type-400 T1or HDSL modules Network connections made with 32-pair standard connectors Optional models for CPE connections to be made with 32-pair connectors, RJ48C jacks or Wire-Wrap headers. Locally powered with a plug-in power supply or external power supply. Rear protected cover provided. Locking front door option. Steel constructed assembly to meet NEBS requirements. 2. APPLICATIONS Figure 1. RM23-20X 2.1 The RM23-20X will house up to 28 type- 200 or 14 type-400 T1or HDSL modules. 2.2 The RM23-20X is designed to be mounted in a 23 rack and is ideal for applications where a facility multiplexer is present at the customer premise to terminate the customer services. This assembly can be locally powered from a type- 400 plug-in power supply module or from external power applied to the RM23-20X terminal block. Please refer to table 2 for wiring connections. 3. INSTALLATION 3.1 This mounting is designed to be installed by trained, authorized personnel only and must be installed in accordance with the local standards and practices for T1 (High Capacity Mb/s) services, or HDSL Services. This assembly is designed to be installed using common hand tools. 3.2 The assembly is designed to be used in a 23 relay rack. The mounting ears are factory set in the forward most position. The mounting ears can be adjusted 1 or 2 inches farther towards the back. 3.3 Facility side connections Facility connections are made to two 32-pair amphenol type connectors, See table 1 for facility/cpe wiring connections and figure Type or 200 Mechanics a registered trademark of Westell, Inc. 2 3.4 CPE side connections On the RM23-200, Customer (CPE) connections are made to the two (2) 32-pair amphnol-type connectors. See table 1 for facility/cpe wiring connections and figure Power connections The RM23-20X can be powered either with a plug-in 400-type power supply or external power via the supplied terminal block. The external power connections are made to the Power Terminal Block. A redundant power source can be connected to the B terminals. See Figure 5. Figure 2. RM23-20X Terminal block connections 3.6 Grounding Grounding connections are be made on either side of the mounting on studs provided. These studs are spaced 5/8 apart. See figure 6. Figure 3. RM rear view On the RM23-203, Customer (CPE) connections are made to Wire-Wrap pins. Each circuit is labeled. See figure 4. Figure 6. RM23-20X Ground Studs CAUTION: The ground studs must be directly (and separately) connected to an earth ground. This must be done to properly ground the assembly as well as all Network Interface Device front panels. Figure 4. RM rear view 3.7 If the Locking front cover is supplied, slide hinge pins on door into slots on the front bottom of the mounting. With the lock in the unlocked position, close door. The lock can now be turned back into the locked position. See figure 7. Page 2 of 5

RM23-20X-1 Locking Front Door 3.8 Please observe the following safety precautions before installing the RM23-20X. a) Never install telephone wiring during a lightning storm. b) Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet locations. c) Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines. d) Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless disconnected at the network interface. 4. TESTING 4.1 Prior to testing the units installed in the assembly, verify that all of the wiring connections have been made. 4.2 An ESD strap must be used when installing or testing modules. a)ensure mounting is properly grounded. b)attach the ESD wrist strap to bare skin and tighten the strap. c)grasp the spring alligator clip on the ESD wrist strap and clip to bare metal on the mounting to dissipate any static charge. 4.3 Once all of the proper powering, grounding, facility and CPE connections have been made, the modules can be installed tested according to their individual manufacturers specifications. Refer to the manufacturers practice for testing instructions. Any attempt to repair or modify the equipment by anyone other than an authorized NAC representative will void the warranty. This limited warranty does not cover any losses or damages resulting from shipment to or from the customer, or from improper installation, abuse, modifications, or unauthorized repair by other than NAC personnel. 6.2 Repair and Return NAC equipment will be repaired or replaced without cost during the warranty period if the product is defective for any reason other than abuse, improper use, or improper installation. Before returning defective equipment, first request a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number from NAC.
