4 Introduction This document provides information on the configuration of coils, inputs and registers as well as the compatibility level with the ModBUS RTU communications protocol that is supported by the PRT-CTRL Protégé Integrated System Controller ModBUS Slave Remote RTU Service. This manual is a supplement to the PRT-CTRL Protégé Integrated System Controller Programming and Reference Manual and does not cover the starting, stopping and programming of the ModBUS RTU Service for Monitoring Applications. Hardware Compatibility The ModBUS Interface and associated services require a dedicated RS-232 or RS-485 Interface (PRT-COMM Dual Communications Interface) for interconnection with the Host System. The connection and configuration of hardware is covered in the relevent section in the PRT-CTRL Protégé System Controller Programming and Installation Manuals. The use of RS-485 allows up to 250 Protégé System Controllers to be interconnected using the ModBUS RTU Slave serial service. The PRT-CTRL ModBUS RTU Service has a programmable address and can be configured to any of the available ModBUS address locations. 3 PRT-CTRL Modbus RTU Monitoring Mode Register Definition

5 MODBUS COMPATIBILITY Introduction When operating the ModBUS Service in Monitoring Mode it will support the following function codes and associated requests from the host application. The unit will return an exception response in the case that a request is made and the function is not supported. The maximum RTU packet size that can be sent to the device is limited internally to 128 Bytes. Packets that exceed this length will be silently discarded by the ModBUS RTU Interface as per the ModBUS specification. Function Support The following table shows the functions that are supported by the ModBUS Service. The ModBUS RTU service is designed to meet the Modbus specification version 1.1 dated November 2002 and can be obtained from the website. Address Support The ModBUS RTU service is designed to allow any valid ModBUS compliant address to be configured using the LCD User Station or Protégé System Management Suite. 5 PRT-CTRL Modbus RTU Monitoring Mode Register Definition

7 MODBUS DEFINITIONS Introduction The ModBUS Service with monitoring mode option supports the activation of virtual zone inputs within the Protégé System Controller that are interfaced to ModBUS coils. The provision for up to 256 monitored points is possible or with memory expansion a maximum of When using the ModBUS RTU Service in the monitoring mode coils are mapped directly to the first Zone Expansion Zone Input and emulated to allow alarms to be incorporated in to an existing system or transmitted directly to a remote monitoring application using any of the available services on the Protégé System. ModBUS Register Definitions The following table definitions are for the ModBUS slave operation when the monitoring mode option is enabled for the ModBUS slave service, this allows the ModBUS slave service to map coils set from a remote PLC, ModBUS Compatible or HMI application to be transmitted using standard security protocols and incorporated in to the alarm processing and system areas in a Protégé System. The use of other registers, inputs or functions that are not required. Sending commands will result in the appropriate response or an exception to be reported. When using the ModBUS monitoring mode only coil activation messages should be sent. Coil Definition The coils are mapped to internal zone inputs within the Protégé System. The Protégé System uses zone input expansion that is extendable in 16 input increments. As shown below each coil is mapped to a zone input starting from the first Zone Expansion address. Activating a coil will cause the zone associated with the coil to open and an alarm to be generated. Deactivating the coil will cause the zone to generate a restore event and the zone to restore. 9 SYSTEM Status The ModBUS serial communication status can be seen by the RX and TX indication located directly on the main PRT-CTRL board. If you are using the serial communication expansion interface the RX and TX indication is located beside the appropriate connector. Link Failure Testing The ModBUS serial communication link status is monitored continuously for valid communications. Each successful communication will reset a poll timer. IF the ModBUS poll timer expires the appropriate trouble zone will be activated in the Protégé System Controller and an alarm condition can be transmitted to a monitoring station, Protégé System Management Suite or LCD User Station. The ModBUS serial communication link can easily be tested by using any of the freely available demonstration ModBUS or OPC servers.
