Introduction This bulletin provides information on wired/wireless headsets that Nortel has confirmed provide acceptable audio quality when used in conjunction with Nortel IP Phones. Quality of Experience, Headsets, and Nortel IP Phones Provision of a high Quality of Experience (QoE) to users of Nortel products is one of Nortel s key goals. With products such as telephones, the audio performance of the product is key to providing that Quality of Experience. With a wired handset which is an integrated part of the offering, the control of audio performance can be tightly controlled. However, there are cases either in specific industry verticals (Call Centers for example) or even by individual basis where a user of a Nortel IP Phone may want to use either a wired or wireless headset. 2 The choice of style of headset (earbud, monaural, binaural, over-the-head,..) may be either corporate-mandated or also left to individual choice. Although Nortel does not directly sell headsets, we believe that it is important that the audio performance of headsets be tested as part of the overall solution. The performance of headsets can differ greatly between different vendors and even between different models of headsets from the same vendor. The audio performance of a headset may sound good to the user of that headset but may not be acceptable to the person they are talking to. At the request of our customers, Nortel recently started a comprehensive test of a variety of headsets with Nortel IP Phones. Headsets were chosen from two of the leading enterprise headset vendors GN Netcom ( and Plantronics ( and brought into our labs for testing. Both subjective testing and objective testing were performed. For objective testing, a benchmark of ANSI/TIA-810- A-2000 audio performance was used. This objective testing included Frequency Response, Loudness, Volume Control, Noise and Distortion. As a result of the testing which has been performed to date, Nortel confirms that the headsets listed in the following tables have been tested in our lab to provide acceptable audio performance with the referenced Nortel IP Phones.
