2 Chicago s Sustainability Strategy: A Timeline 2008: Release of the Chicago Climate Action Plan 25% GHG reduction by 2020, 80% by 2050 (below 1990 levels) : Chicago develops the Sustainable Chicago Action Agenda January 2017 : Mayor Emanuel announced 7% reduction in Chicago s 2015 GHG emissions from 2005 levels April 2017: Mayor Emanuel commits that all public buildings will be powered by renewable energy by 2025 May 2017: Mayor Emanuel creates the Climate Change Is Real website: June 2017: Mayor Emanuel signs executive order committing the City to meeting the guidelines of the Paris Agreement

4 Retrofit Chicago s Energy Challenge participants work to achieve cost savings by adopting a 20% energy reduction target Overview of the Retrofit Chicago Energy Challenge (formerly known as the Commercial Buildings Initiative): Background: Building energy use represents 71% of GHG emissions in Chicago. Energy efficiency is a citywide priority to save money, create jobs, and reduce negative environmental impact. Program Objective: Accelerate energy efficiency in the City s largest private and non-profit buildings to save money, increase asset value, drive economic development, and reduce emissions Participant Commitment: As Chicago real estate leaders, Energy Challenge participants agree to: Reduce energy usage in one or more buildings by 20+% in the next 5 years, with baseline up to two years in the past Begin work within 6 months Track progress and share successes Serve as an efficiency ambassador 4

5 Joining the Retrofit Chicago Energy Challenge has several benefits, such as increasing property value & competitiveness Benefits of Joining the Retrofit Chicago Energy Challenge: Receive Recognition Set apart the property s brand as a leader in sustainability Receive credit for retrofit work already completed Be included in press releases and program announcements from the Mayor s Office Apply to win annual program awards to gain additional recognition Obtain Technical Support Attend quarterly peer learning exchanges on proven energy efficiency solutions Gain access to clear progress reports showing energy baseline, target, and achievements to-date Receive application support for utility rebates, programs, etc. 5

6 By 2018, building participants had reduced annual energy use by 14.5, saving $10M USD per year Progress Highlights From The Retrofit Chicago Energy Challenge Expanded City Coverage: 90 buildings and 57MM square feet: Office, hotel, university, cultural, religious, and residential space Participating buildings range in age from 5 to 125+ years Tangible Progress: 14.5% total energy use reduction to-date $10.6 million annual energy costs avoided $350,000 + saved to Chicago s grid and greater community Buildings Taking Action: Common energy conservation measures (ECMs) include: Installing more efficient LED lighting Installing motion sensors tied to heating/cooling/lighting Upgrading heating and cooling systems Helping tenants improve efficiency in their spaces See for more info 2014 Infographic Highlighting Progress 6
