17 Activity 9.1: R&D of in-situ component Essential data source alongside space data from large scale in-situ networks Enhance measurement & data transmission/exchange mechanisms (smart grids, semantic interoperability...) 24 Focus of the two technology topics: enable the emergence of new concepts prepare the long term competitiveness of Europe space sector Most of the efforts will probably result in welcomed but incremental improvements, however, radical innovations are needed to drastically change the game.

30 Activity 9.3: SME specific research Bringing terrestrial SME research capabilities into the space domain i.e. bringing SMEs not working in space domain together with space players (Small) projects, with SMEs in leading role Majority of requested EU funding is to go to SMEs in the project

31 Activity 9.3: Workshop Events and studies Focus on preparing research agenda for post-fp7 EU research in space domain Workshops which bring R&D community together to reach consensus on research gaps Identify R&D particularly suited for EU level collaborative R&D, lend themselves for Innovation activities Able to facilitate forging of wide research alliances (e.g. at pre-competitive level)

35 The Research Executive Agency (REA) REA was created in Dec 2007 and became operational in June 2009 REA implements the following actions: SME-specific actions (Capacities) Marie Curie actions (People) Security and Space actions (Cooperation) and provides the following services: The evaluation facility for the calls The validation of beneficiaries A central FP7 enquiry service

36 Role of REA for the Space Theme REA is responsible for performing the evaluation of proposals submitted to Space calls, negotiating successful ones and dealing with subsequent technical, contractual and technical follow-up EC (DG ENTR) retains full responsibility for the definition of work programme content and funding decisions
