3 About the event On 12 December 2018 techuk and partners will bring together academics, philosophers, lawyers, technology experts, policy makers and other key stakeholders at techuk second annual Digital Ethics Summit. The aim of this year s Summit is to assess the progress made over the last twelve months to build the capacity and capabilities needed to recognise, identify and address digital ethical issues and concerns. It will consider whether the practical action that has been taken is enough and discuss what more may be needed. It will assess whether the current public engagement on ethical issues is being successful and ask whether additional ethical foresight and action may be needed to identify the public s real ethical concerns. The Summit will also showcase the progress being made by industry to develop simple tools and solutions businesses need to embed ethical decision making within organisations. The Summit will again be organised by techuk in partnership with the Royal Statistical Society, Wellcome Trust, Royal Society, British Academy, University of Oxford Data Ethics Lab, Open Data Institute, The Alan Turing Institute and the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence and The Nuffield Foundation s Ada Lovelace Institute. Through keynote presentations and panel discussions the Summit aims to bring together a number of current conversations and highlight multi-stakeholder efforts happening in the UK, Europe and globally. It will consider how and where partners could work more together and how techuk could play a role in coordinating activities that could be scaled up.

With a number of new bodies and institutes having been created the panel will discuss how all these new bodies work together; whether there are still issues that are not being addressed and what capabilities and capacity may still be needed to ensure any gaps that exist now, or in the future, are identified and addressed. 12:10 Networking lunch 13:10 Afternoon keynote presentation Where is public opinion today on digital ethic issues? 13:30 Panel discussion Do we know what the public are thinking? How do we get public engagement right? This year we have seen the emergence of a national and international digital ethics debate. While this debate has generated a great deal of public interest and concern it will also have sounded very academic, technical, ethereal and therefore disconnected from people s everyday life. Recent incidents have resulted in public outcry and ethical questions about digital technologies being raised. However, it is not as yet clear if people s digital behaviours have changed as a result. If this is really the case do we actually know where public opinion on digital ethics issues sits today. This panel will consider the importance of engaging the public and discuss what has already been learnt from public engagement conducted so far. It will determine where gaps in current knowledge and ethical foresight may exists today and how these gaps could be filled. It will discuss the roles and responsibilities for new UK bodies and institutes created to get public engagement right and discuss what that means in practice.

It will explain the action already taken by the tech sector in response to current public concerns as well as explore the proactive measures being taken to ensure an ethics by design approach is embed into the development of new, innovative and intelligent, technologies.
