1 Trends in Next Generation Data Center Infrastructure

2 Survey Summary Between October 2017 and January 2018 Gatepoint Research invited selected executives to participate in a survey themed Trends in Next Generation Data Center Infrastructure. Candidates were invited via and 80 executives have participated to date. Management levels represented are predominantly IT senior decision makers: 5% hold the title CxO, 21% are VPs, 74% are Directors. Survey participants represent firms from a wide variety of industries including business and consumer services, education, financial services, healthcare, media, primary and general manufacturing, mining, retail and wholesale trade, telecom, transportation, and utilities. Responders work for firms with a wide range of revenue levels: 60% work in Fortune 1000 companies with revenues over $1.5 billion; 19% work in Mid-Market or Large firms whose revenues are between $250 million and $1.5 billion; 21% work in Small companies with less than $250 million in revenues. 100% of responders participated voluntarily; none were engaged using telemarketing.

3 Executive Overview With companies needing to deploy software more frequently than in the past, there s tremendous pressure on IT departments to instantly provision resources to get new applications up and running quickly. Are IT organizations considering hyper converged infrastructures to elevate business agility? This survey asks respondents to report: Their opinion of hyper converged infrastructure technology. What vendors are included in their current infrastructure? What workloads do they run in the datacenter, and do they have an on-premise current cloud environment? How open is their organization to new technology and approaches?

6 How many vendors are part of your IT infrastructure? 1 Vendor 15% 5 or more Vendors 41% 2 to 4 Vendors 44% The great majority of respondents use multiple vendors in their IT infrastructure; 44% use up to four vendors, and 41% report using five or more. Just 15% rely on a single vendor.

7 What major IT projects are you driving within the next 18 months? Other 7% Data Center consolidation 10% Storage refresh 15% Server refresh 11% Cloud initiative (moving workloads to public cloud) 57% Moving workloads to the public cloud is the most common major IT project over the next year and a half. 57% of respondents identify it as a top initiative.

Relatively fewer respondents run virtual desktops (60%) and Big Data apps (48%).

Another 40% are moving to a virtualized environment.
