Disasters are becoming more intense, unpredictable, frequent and costly Many small to medium enterprises (SMEs) find that even business planning is a challenge let alone shifting towards DRR and planning SMEs are often exposed and lack the capacity to better protect & prepare themselves However there are many resilient businesses, good tools & examples, more publicprivate sector partnership to help local business shift to DRR

13 The business case for disaster risk reduction to implement the Sendai Framework THE SENDAI FRAMEWORK Reducing disaster risk is a costeffective investment in preventing future losses. Effective disaster risk management contributes to sustainable development. (paragraph 3) and maintain env health conditions There is a need for the public and private sectors and civil society organizations, like local govt as well as academia and scientific and research institutions, to work more closely together and to create opportunities for collaboration, and for businesses to integrate disaster risk into their management practices in communities. (paragraph 6) MISSION STATEMENT To create riskresilient societies by energising the private sector in collaboration with the public sector and other stakeholders to achieve the outcome and goal of the Sendai Framework in a transparent and inclusive way that delivers local and measurable impact. Mechanisms and incentives for compliance with existing laws and regulations e.g. land use and urban planning, building codes (27 d). Quality standards, such as certifications and awards for DRM private sector (27 j) PRIORITY 3 Investing in DRR for resilience Public and private investment in DRR (29). The private sector and local govt with universities and other partners need to start protecting itself governments can t protect the economy alone 4. DRR is not a cost but an investment fundamental to business 5. The private sector is more agile than government it can quickly assess risk, promote systems and standards for resilience 6. UNISDR is forging partnerships with govt, business and universities to build capacity to manage risks instead of disasters
