1 Overview The Modular Cooling System (MCS) is a series of modular, distributed cooling solutions that removes the high levels of heat generated by current advanced server and mass storage systems. Equipped with infrastructure, cooling, and IT power distribution, the MCS provides a uniform cooling approach for servers and other IT equipment installed in server racks. HP's Bi-Directional cooling technology makes possible the simultaneous cooling of two racks when the MCS Expansion Rack is utilized. The MCS racks can cool as little as 5kW, depending on configuration, and as high as 50kW of server capacity, either all on one rack or split between two racks. HP MCS is designed to complement any existing datacenter by adding computing power without adding to the heat load in the current datacenter. In addition, by packing three times the kw capacity of a standard rack, the MCS will extend, considerably, the life of your datacenter. The horizontal air flow of the HP MCS fully supports the industry-standard front-to-back cooling principle. This way, all devices receive adequate and evenly distributed cool air, regardless of the mounting position within the enclosure. 2 Models MCS Rack (MCS) 100 Cooling Unit NOTE: The purchase of HP MCS 100 Cooling Unit (P/N BW976A) includes HP mm rack and cooling unit attached. NOTE: The MCS 100 can be run on as little as one Scalable Fan Unit (BW978A) at an approximate power wattage of 5kW, depending on configuration, but can incorporate as many as four fans for a maximum wattage capacity of 30kW. 200 Cooling Unit NOTE: The purchase of HP MCS 200 Cooling Unit (P/N BW974A) includes HP 10K 1200mm rack and cooling unit attached. NOTE: The MCS 200 Cooling Unit comes standard with six Scalable Fan Units (BW978A). NOTE: The MCS 200 can be run on as little as one Scalable Fan Unit (BW978A) at an approximate power wattage of 15kW, depending on configuration, but can incorporate as many as four fans for a maximum wattage capacity of 50kW. NOTE: The MCS family of cooling systems is made up of two models, the MCS 100 and MCS 200. The MCS 100 has a central air exchange and cooling capacity range of, depending on configuration, 5kW to a stated maximum of 30kW, whereas the MCS 200 has a central air exchange and cooling capacity range of, depending on configuration, 15kW to a stated maximum of 50kW. NOTE: Both the MCS 100 and MCS 200 come standard with an MCS Standard Rack, but can also both be fitted with an MCS Expansion Rack, thereby doubling the server capacity of one unit. NOTE: If a unit utilizes both the MCS Standard Rack and MCS Expansion Rack, both racks do not need to be equally burdened. NOTE: The maximum cooling requirement of the servers (in kw) installed cannot exceed the unit's cooling capacity, and an MCS Expansion Rack does not improve a unit's cooling capacity. NOTE: A loaded MCS should only be moved by professional movers. Environmental Monitor with SNMP integration to Systems Insight Manager (SIM) Power Input Redundancy for dual power source Condensate Evacuation system to prevent condensation from entering air stream Site Preparation Guide available at: Key Components HP MCS Key Features Main Breakers - Provides power for the HP MCS through circuit breakers Heat Exchanger Module - Includes an air-to-water heat transfer device specially created for demanding datacenter environments Display - Provides general cooling unit status Management Module - Provides users with web-based capabilities to set, monitor, and control temperature within the modular cooling unit and displays the health of the unit Fan Controller - Operates the fans, according to current cabinet air temperature Air Bleeder Valve - Enables air to bleed out of the system manually when coolant is initially filled Water Controller - Senses for condensation, leaks, water temperatures, flow rate, and the status of the water valve and reports this information to the management module AC Input/Network Connection - Provides primary and, if available, secondary AC input connections and management network interface AC Transfer Switch - Provides dual-ac power with a fail-over feature for redundancy Fans - Provides circulation of cooled air through the computer equipment rack Water Group - Includes the water valve, flow meter, check valve, and temperature sensors A condensation pump with overflow and condensation lines connects to the water group. Each MCS has one water group. Cooling Capacity of up to 50kW - MCS has been designed to support a total load of servers in a single rack or dual rack configuration. The MCS unit will provide cool air distributed evenly along the full height of the MCS rack in the industry standard front-to-back method. Power Input Redundancy - Automatically detects power failure and switches to alternate source. This comes standard for the MCS 200 and is offered as an option for the MCS 100. Environmental Control and Safety - The MCS features full environmental control of the cooled air temperature being placed in front of the servers. A water leak detector ships standard with the MCS. Alarms can be sent via SNMP traps to Systems Insight Manager (SIM). Hot-swappable components - Fans can be replaced while the unit is operating allowing for great flexibility in servicing the MCS. 6 Service and Support The defective media retention service feature option applies only to Disk or eligible SSD/Flash Drives replaced by HP due to malfunction. It does not apply to any exchange of Disk or SSD/Flash Drives that have not failed. SSD/Flash Drives that are specified by HP as consumable parts and/or that have exceeded maximum supported lifetime and/or the maximum usage limit as set forth in the manufacturer's operating manual or the technical data sheet are not eligible for the defective media retention service feature option.
