1 Electronics_ Singapore - Global Electronics Hub At a Glance Singapore has developed a strong foundation for the Electronics industry over the last 40 years, transforming from its modest beginnings as the only TV assembly plant in Southeast Asia to a vital node in the global electronics market. The Electronics industry is a key contributor to Singapore s economy, accounting for 5.4% of Singapore s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in There are more than 79,000 workers employed in the industry (19% of the total manufacturing workforce), of which about 60% are skilled 1. In 2013, the Electronics industry attracted numerous investment projects, totalling S$3.3 billion of Fixed Assets Investments (27% of the total committed by EDB) and S$0.6 billion of Total Business Expenditure (8% of the total committed by EDB). These projects are expected to contribute S$1.8 billion in Value Added per annum to Singapore s GDP, and create 1,310 skilled jobs when they are fully implemented. 1 Professionals, managers, engineers and technicians

2 Industry Vision Our vision is for Singapore to be a Home in Asia for global leaders to develop new technologies, products and applications that will enable us to capture growth opportunities from an increasingly mobile, connected and sensory world. We will achieve this by building on our strengths in semiconductors and data storage. Opportunities in Singapore 1. Semiconductors 1.1 Singapore s semiconductor industry is the second largest in the Asia Pacific region, manufacturing about 1 in 10 of the world s integrated circuits (ICs), and is home to some of the largest players in the industry. The companies here undertake a range of manufacturing, R&D and headquarters (HQ) activities: Manufacturing 1.2 Singapore has established itself as a leading location for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. There are 14 silicon IC wafer fabs, 4 compound semiconductor wafer fabs, 3 Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) wafer fabs and 20 IC assembly and test plants in The silicon IC wafer fabs collectively produced approximately one million wafers per month (200mm equivalent) in The industry leaders here include 6 of the top IDMs (Infineon, Linear Technology, Micron, Panasonic, Renesas and STMicroelectronics), 3 of the top wafer foundries (GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics Corporation), and 4 of the top outsourced assembly and test services companies (Ardentec, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, STATS ChipPAC, and United Test and Assembly Center). 1.4 GLOBALFOUNDRIES started the expansion of Fab 7. The expansion aims to almost double Fab 7 s 300mm wafer fabrication capacity to reach nearly one million wafers per year. 1.5 STATS ChipPAC opened a new 197,000 sq ft factory in Yishun and will embark on a S$630 million expansion plan to undertake the development and manufacturing of next generation packaging technologies. R&D 1.6 Singapore continues to attract R&D investments to complement and strengthen our HQ and manufacturing activities. The semiconductor industry is the largest contributor to the private sector R&D expenditure in In 2012, it accounted for 26% of the total private sector R&D expenditure in 1.7 Qualcomm established an IC design and Engineering R&D centre in Singapore to undertake advanced mobile chipset design and development. Similarly, Maxim established an Asia Pacific team in Singapore to design power management ICs for mobile 1.8 United Microelectronics Corporation invested S$140 million to establish a Centre of Excellence for advanced specialty process technologies in its Singapore Fab (Fab 12i). The Centre of Excellence will undertake R&D collaborations with local research institutes such as A*STAR s Institute of Microelectronics.

3 1.9 A*STAR s Institute of Microelectronics and GLOBALFOUNDRIES will be collaborating on the development of advanced MEMS devices for automotive, aerospace, consumer, healthcare and mobility HQ 1.10 Singapore is well connected and strategically positioned in the centre of Asia, serving as an ideal location for companies to control their regional manufacturing operations and supply chain Industry leaders Avago, Broadcom Corporation, Infineon, Marvell, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Xilinx have their International or Asia Pacific HQ in 1.12 NXP established its Global HQ for Standard Products, its Global HQ for Operations and its ASEAN HQ for Sales and Marketing in 1.13 Qualcomm set up its International HQ and Global Logistics Hub in Singapore, from where it will do strategic business planning and development, sourcing, procurement and distribution. 2. Data Storage 2.1 Singapore is the world s largest manufacturer of hard disk media with 46% global market share. 2.2 All of the top 3 suppliers of hard disk media, Seagate, Western Digital and Showa Denko, manufacture hard disk media in All three companies also do hard disk media R&D in Singapore, to augment their manufacturing operations. 2.3 A*STAR s Data Storage Institute and Micron are also collaborating on the development of STT-MRAM, a promising non volatile memory technology for next generation storage. 2.4 Seagate broke ground for a S$100 million design and R&D centre in Seagate s 500 man design and R&D centre will be developing ultrathin hard disk drives for ultrabooks, convertibles and tablets. 3. Printing 3.1 Singapore is the leading location for the development and manufacture of inkjet printers. 3.2 Singapore is the Regional HQ for Hewlett-Packard (HP) s Imaging and Printing Group. HP designs and manufactures key components for its printers and presses in Singapore, such as the print-head assemblies and ink supplies. HP also has its Inkjet and Web Solutions Global Design Centre in The Global Design Centre designs and develops HP s entire portfolio of inkjet software and services for the worldwide markets. 3.3 Other companies that undertake printer-related R&D in Singapore include Kodak, Océ and Toshiba TEC. 3.4 Konica Minolta established its Regional HQ for Southeast Asia in The RHQ will manage and support its sales subsidiaries and distributors in the region.

Batteries and Power Electronics Systems 4.1 Sony and Energizer manufacture advanced lithium batteries in 4.2 Delphi, ST Kinetics, and STL Energy Technology Singapore conduct R&D in battery management systems for automotive 4.3 Singapore s connectivity and proximity to the regional growth markets makes it a good location for companies to orchestrate their regional HQ activities. Some of the companies with their Global or Regional HQ in Singapore include Energizer, GP Batteries, VARTA, and Chloride. 4.4 Sony established its first corporate university outside of Japan in Singapore, to train its next generation leaders for the AMEA region. process R&D for Substrate and Mounting Technology for medical, energy and environmental 6. Imaging 6.1 Singapore is a key manufacturing hub for several global companies in the imaging business. This includes 3M PC Touch (a joint venture between 3M and Quanta) and AU Optronics M PC Touch manufactures and commercialises Projected Capacitive Touch solutions, based on flexible printed electronics technology, for the personal computing market. 6.3 AU Optronics manufactures advanced TFT-LCD and OLED display panels in Singapore for mobile consumer 5. Passive Components 5.1 Singapore is one of the key locations for companies manufacturing passive component products. This includes TDK-EPC and Murata. 5.2 TDK-EPC produces more than 80% of its global SAW filters in Singapore, undertaking the full manufacturing value chain of activities (design, fabrication, packaging and distribution). Murata manufactures its multi-layered ceramic capacitors in 5.3 Panasonic Industrial Devices (PID) established its first SAW filter manufacturing plant outside of Japan in PID also undertakes product R&D for MEMS and power management devices as well as
