2 OpenStack is a transformative platform that enables flexible private and public clouds. The open source, programmable and elastic nature of the platform is a significant evolutionary step from traditional static computing environments. In addition, OpenStack provides a primary API abstraction layer across heterogeneous vendors in the datacenter, allowing for programmability and automation. Datera is committed to the open source community and is a contributor to various Linux and OpenStack projects including Nova, Cinder, and Glance. In addition, Datera is the primary contributor and maintainer of Linux target mode stack, Linux-IO Target (LIO ) and various IO path modules for the Linux kernel. Datera continues to contribute patches and enhancements to the community. These contributions are widely adopted in the industry and are one of the primary drivers for the emergence of the software defined storage market and its use of Linux based storage targets. Cinder provides block storage services in OpenStack. Datera Cinder driver seamlessly integrates the Datera system with OpenStack over iscsi block protocol. Datera provides all the Cinder services, and allows provisioning through the Cinder / Nova / OpenStack CLI. The Cinder service creates and manages storage in the form of block devices known as Cinder volumes. The Cinder volumes provide persistent storage to the virtual machines that are managed by OpenStack Nova (compute service). Persistent Storage can be configured as boot device, and/or data device, and the volumes can be moved among instances. Datera manages the access control lists to make sure as compute instances traverse multiple hosts, the storage tracks the compute instance. Datera Cinder driver supports the following capabilities: Volume create, delete, list, attach, detach, extend Snapshots create, delete, list Volume creation from snapshot, image, volume clone Create image from volume Fast cloning Volume-types QoS-types for max IOPS (read, write, total) and bandwidth (read, write, total) Multi-tenancy (within OpenStack with tenants, and across OpenStack clouds) The client nodes are expected to access the Datera EDF through the iscsi block protocol. All client nodes accessing the Datera EDF must have the Linux I/O (LIO), open-iscsi, open-iscsi-utils and wget packages installed.

3 There are two steps in configuring Datera as storage provider and these steps are detailed here. Updating the Datera Cinder Driver Datera Cinder driver is packaged as part of the OpenStack distributions. The drivers included with the OpenStack distribution represent a point in time release and are likely to be out of date. It is recommended to update the Datera Cinder driver on the Cinder controller nodes. Please pick latest release of the Datera Cinder driver that matches the OpenStack release. For all nodes running the Cinder volume service, execute these steps: 1. Make a copy of the default Datera Cinder driver: Note: Directory location is for standard upstream OpenStack distributions; the path may be different for other commercial OpenStack distributions. 2. Get the latest version of the Datera Cinder driver by visiting the Datera Github repository at github.com/datera/cinder-driver. Find the URL for the latest version of the driver that matches your OpenStack deployment. Copy the latest driver to the node. For example: Modify the Cinder.conf (Note: Datera recommends setting the debug=true for debugging purposes) Cinder allows you to configure one or more backend storage systems. Please see: org/admin-guide/blockstorage-multi-backend.html 1. This configuration assumes Cinder will be configured with multi-backend method. Edit the /etc/ cinder/cinder.conf:

4 2. Optionally setup Datera as the default backend: 3. Create a new section for the Datera backend definition: NOTE: san_ip can be either the Datera Management VIP or one of the iscsi Access VIPs depending on the network segregation requirements. 4. Ensure the OpenStack controller can reach the Datera san_ip select: 5. On all nodes running Cinder volume services: Linux-IO Target (LIO ) is the standard open-source SCSI target in Linux. It supports all prevalent storage fabrics, including Fibre Channel, FCoE, IEEE 1394, iscsi, NVMe-OF, iser, SRP, USB, vhost, etc.
