Effective Fire and Smoke Barrier Management BICSI NE 2006 Presented by John P. Sinisi
Today s s Goals and Objectives Benefits of Effective Fire and Smoke Barriers What is a Tested System Best Practices for Fire Barrier Management Innovative Solutions and Programs
Critical Safety Issue Breaches in fire and smoke barriers can allow for uncontrolled migration of fire, smoke and toxic gas throughout a structure should an incident occur.
Prevention Increased evacuation time, asset protection and containment of toxic smoke are primary benefits of effective fire barrier management.
Contractor Goals Control Cost Maintain Schedule Control Liability Pass Inspection
Contractor Benefits Efficiency = Cost Savings Planning = Quality Assurance Compliance = Liability Control
Regulatory Guidelines and Methods of Compliance Suggested Methods for Compliance Sets Guidelines for Inspection Format for Reporting Qualifications of Inspector Recognized as a Best Practices Approach Verification of Properly Installed Firestop
Engineered Systems Approach There are over 5500 Tested and Approved UL System to Repair Most Barrier Problems UL System Number CAJ 2135 C = Floor and Wall Penetration A = Concrete Floor 5 or Less J = Concrete Wall 8 or Less 2135 = Nonmetallic Pipe, Conduit or tubing Need to now what you are fire stopping before picking tested system.
Criteria for Testing a Firestop System L-Rating Determines amount of air leakage in cu.ft/min.sq.ft or opening (CFM/sq.ft) through the fire stop system at ambient and 400 F air temperature at an IR pressure differential of 0.30 in. W.C. T-Rating Max. temperature rise of 325 F (181 C) above ambient on the unexposed surface of the floor or wall, on the penetrating item and on the fill material. ASTM Time/Temperature Curve Hose Stream Performance required for physical strength of the firestop before, during and after the fire. F-Rating Prohibits flame passage through the system for the duration of the fire test.
Standard Fire Stop Repairs are Listed in The Book and Come with an Assembly Drawing and Instructions Physical characteristics of the firestop issue Materials of construction Type of items penetrating L, F and T Ratings and Hose Test Results Field measurements including annular space, linear feet or penetrant dimensions Design criteria of the fire barrier system
Example Firestop System Construction - 4 PVC Through Drywall (Combustible) Firestopping - Intumescent Sleeve & Sealant Before After
Typical Penetrations & Joints Firestop Issues Primary cause of fire and smoke spread... Unprotected Horizontal & Vertical Openings
Common Names of Fire Resistive Rated Construction Needing Fire and Smoke Control Fire Walls Fire Barrier Walls Fire Partitions Smoke Barriers Fire Blocking and Draft Stopping Incident Isolation Barriers Cable, cable trays, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural.. If it penetrates a rated wall I requires a fire stop repair with a tested system
Unique Fire Stop Situations Require a Signed Engineering Judgment from the Manufacturer to Specify the Repair work Needed to Restore the Rating of the Barrier
Best Practices Solutions and Strategies Standardize Your Program Assess and Inspect Walls and Floors Know where Your rated Walls Are and Protect Them Know Your Neighbors Know Your Contractors Require Permits Maintain Documentation Manage Cabling and Fire Stop Simultaneously
Goals of Survey and Inspection Coordinated inspection and survey provides a cost-effective approach for identifying breaches or verifying installed firestop systems.
Standardized Reporting Work Order RFP Annular Space Inspection Breach Summary Design Standard Verification Compliance Documentation A customized report can include issue details and critical information, photo and sketch to facilitate repair or response.
Documentation is the Key to Cost Effective Fire and Smoke Barrier Management Standard Forms and Permits can Help Manage Contractors and In-House Mechanics Working on rated Walls and Floors Simultaneous Data-Photo Capture Software for the PDA Provides Documentation and Management Information Reporting
Maintain CAD Drawings Using Field Condition Reports to Monitor Barrier Integrity and Protect Assets
Maintain a Barrier Inventory
Cable Tray UL Directory provide hundreds of solutions to fire stop industry standard cable trays.
Major and Minor projects Require Consideration of Impact on Fire and Smoke Rated Assemblies Basement Floors 1 thru 30 Even Non Core Business Installations Can Be Overlooked for the Damage They Create
New Installations in and Old Building
Importance of Using a Tested System Untested repair materials can actually promote the passage of fire and smoke though a protective barrier.
Innovative Solutions to Cable Penetration Management Fire stop window tested system approach provide one installation at the barrier to run all penetrations through.
Benefits of Identification and Marking of Rated Walls and Assemblies Promote proper firestopping with OSHA Compliant communication. Get the word out to your contractors and in-house workers by assuring all fire rated walls and floors in your facility are properly marked to alert trades to special construction repair requirements.

Fire Stopping Work Starts when the Opening is made in the Barrier Save Money and DO IT RIGHT the First Time!
Balanced Approach to Fire Barrier Management Education Contractor/Pre-Construction Meetings At a pre-construction meeting with sub-contractors we explain compliance requirements from paperwork to installed firestop verification, setting the standard for the jobsite.
In Summary Proper firestopping protects critical assets Firestopping is not going away It is in the code(s) Inspectors, buyers and owners are getting educated Firestop can be a value add, billable activity for your company if managed properly It is cheaper to do right the first time Industry resources in assessment, project management inspection and training are available Liability Management
