Aligning Academic Supply and Industry Demand Presented by: RADM (ret) Ken Slaght, Co-Chair & President, San Diego Cyber Center of Excellence (CCOE) 1
Cyber Center of Excellence (CCOE) CCOE is a non-profit that works with industry, academia, infrastructure, local government, and the military and intelligence community to accelerate the region s cyber economy and position it as a global hub of cybersecurity innovation. *Regional Collaboration Powering Cyber Innovation* 2
Cyber Talent Supply and Demand Gap Analysis 3
San Diego s Cyber Economy BY THE NUMBERS 4
Process Deans Lunch Series Generated Industry Snap Shot Refined Terminology DATA Collection DATA Analysis Summit 5
Common Terminology Cyber Security or Cybersecurity or Cyber? We pulled active cybersecurity job recs in the region and analyzed them for commonalities. Based on that review we were able to identify 11 key Cybersecurity Domains that those jobs could be attributed to. Those domains were are used for a base line analysis and common measuring block. 1. Threat Detection 2. Threat Prevention 3. Incident 4. Compliance & Audit 5. Risk 6. IT Infrastructure 7. IT Service 8. IT Security 9. Programming 10. Database 11. Other (TBD) 6
Data University Data Provided From: Cal State San Marcos Coleman University San Diego State University (Computer Science) San Diego State Extension University of San Diego UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering (Computer Science) UC San Diego Extension Key Data Collected: Course Numbers, Course Descriptions & Annual Throughput Total Courses Reviewed: 321 7

Supply & Demand Estimated Annual Industry Demand & Approximate Annual Throughput from Regional Universities Annual Industry Growth & Attrition Total Degrees (Annual) Undergrad CS & CSE Degrees Masters CS & CSE Degrees Cyber Security Specific Masters Programs Doctoral CS & CSE Degrees University Data: SDSU,UCSD, CSUSM, USD & Coleman University 9
Supply vs. Demand Supply Basically Meets Demand However Regional Supply Demand Extapolated From CCOE Threat Detection Programming Other (TBD) IT Security IT Infrastructure IT Service Threat Prevention 10 Database Incident Risk Compliance & Audit Regional Supply Demand Extapolated From CCOE
Key Takeaways The region is producing more CS & CSE s at the undergrad and graduate level than the annual demand in the cybersecurity industry. Most of the courses in those CSE programs are not currently designed to teach cybersecurity specifically, but do provide a technical foundation. In order to get a more accurate handle on the demand from industry at the job specific level, additional survey work would need to be conducted. Maintaining an accurate inventory of the cybersecurity curriculum offered in the region and matching that with the growing demand will be a valuable exercise moving forward. 11
Talent Programs & Initiatives 12
Attracting and Nurturing Talent Job Board connects the global cyber workforce with San Diego cybersecurity job opportunities. University Pipeline Partnership with Cal State University San Marcos, San Diego State University, UC San Diego and University of San Diego to align curriculum and connect top students with career opportunities in San Diego s cyber industry. Link2Cyber on-campus and on-base events to introduce students and veterans to the local cyber ecosystems and trends in talent demand and career opportunities. Inform Journeys interactive San Diego cybersecurity career pathways map to guide students, veterans and those transitioning into the field. 13
Inform Journeys Career Mapping Demo 14
Next Steps Apply San Diego s methodology to the NICE Supply & Demand and Trainings Sub-Committee skill set mapping Extrapolate larger supply and demand Explore use of platforms like Inform Journeys for public consumption and use 15
