3 Developed in response to the broadening of the ASHRAE recommended server inlet temperature envelope in 2008, Excool represents the most advanced technology of its kind. Unique in its approach Excool is able to cool data centres with year round full or partial free cooling. Mechanical cooling is only required to top-up the partial cooling element only when the outdoor temperature is excessively high. The successful initial application of the technology and first of its kind in the UK in 2011 has been followed by installations by leading global DC providers and end users.

4 The system uses outdoor air to indirectly cool the indoor air supply removing the data centre heat via a specially designed PVC heat exchanger. Heat transfer is achieved without the outdoor air entering the building. Therefore outdoor hazards such as fire, air pollution and salt aerosol are kept out of the building.

6 How it works Excool have optimised air to air heat exchanger technology specifically for the application of adiabatic and evaporative Hot return air from data hall cooling in data centres. Excool s unique heat exchanger is manufactured from a composite material which unlike the more commonly used aluminium, makes it resistant to corrosion, more robust and leak tight. The Excool adiabatic and evaporative cooling system has been developed specifically for the product and is highly efficient both in terms of its ability to saturate the outdoor air fully and in its water use. Supply air temperature is controlled by a modulating outdoor air volume, water use and, when required, mechanical cooling. Cool outdoor air

7 Data Centre Winter Operation Air returning from the data hall is drawn through the heat exchanger by ECDC plug fans. Cool outdoor air is drawn through a second air path in the heat exchanger by additional ECDC plug fans. Ambient air Datercentre Return and Supply air Heat Exchanger Summer Operation Moisture is added to the hot outdoor air which has the effect of lowering the air temperature Data Centre temperature. A typical UK peak summer day may have a dry bulb of 35 C with a wet bulb temperature of 21 C. By fully saturating the air the dry bulb temperature can be reduced to 21 C. This reduced temperature air is then used as a cooling medium to remove the heat from the data centre. Ambient air Datercentre Return and Supply air Heat Exchanger Adiabatic Optional DX Module In more challenging environments it may be necessary to top-up the cooling capacity with a partial DX supplementary cooling section. This is an integrated module and is designed to supplement the heat exchangers. It is sized as a small percentage of the overall cooling load. 8 Reduced Electrical Infrastructure The reduction in the dependency on mechanical cooling has a major impact on the size and cost of the electrical infrastructure. When considering the lower capacity requirement of the electrical to mechanical power loads, the plant, equipment and machinery power infrastructure is reduced. A clean potable water supply is required for normal operation and maintenance intervals. The units have an automatic drain down and purge cycle to ensure all areas of potential bacterial growth are removed. 9 High Quality Construction Lifetime anti Corrosion Warranty The Excool product uses high quality components and materials to ensure long term reliability and resistance to corrosion. The product is provided with a lifetime warranty against corrosion. Stainless steel framework and support structures are used throughout the unit. Outer panels are a composite of PVC and aluminium. Compact and Lightweight The technologically advanced design and use of high grade materials results in an industry leading unit size and weight. 11 Witness Testing and Validation Excool has committed significant financial resource to enable clients to see the product operating in simulate environmental conditions. Equipment manufactured for specific projects can be fully witness tested under full heat and temperature loads at site based ambient conditions to validate thermal and acoustic performance. The test facility is located at the company s UK headquarters in the West Midlands.
