5 The 4th Industrial Revolution Data growth and power challenges for data centers Data-driven world The shift from simple digitization to innovation based on combinations of technologies. The application of the Internet of Things to virtually every industry is challenging what it means to be connected By 2025 it is estimated that there will be billion connected devices worldwide, traffic is predicted to increase more than 400% Power challenges Increased capability will put further strain on data centers energy supplies In addition, the industry is under considerable pressure to clean up its energy consumption and reduce its emissions, to cut operational costs and to become more efficient. Green data centers and sustainability drives reducing energy consumption but it is a balancing act to also keep uptime. November 20, 2017 Slide 5
6 Power challenges and changes Monitoring, intelligent devices Where is power consumed? From experience. about 70% of cost of managing servers revolves around power and cooling Measuring and monitoring is 1 st step into efficiency improvements ABB offers a Current Measurement System (CMS) for branch monitoring of AC and DC currents making it possible to acquire thousands of measurement points over a single bus line. The system will act as both an early warning system, alerting operators to any problems before serious damage occurs, and an analysis tool, providing clarity on where and how electricity is used November 20, 2017 Slide 6

9 Power challenges and changes Monitoring, understanding power Where is power consumed? In a dynamic data center, it may be difficult to monitor and balance space, power and cooling to enable efficient uptime and availability. ABB Ability Data Center Automation helps data center managers to monitor cooling and energy consumption, auto-aggregation capability allows values to be automatically calculated across layers of physical or virtual equipment. This means that power, thermal, IT, financial or other data can be automatically collected, calculated and presented as business value information even as changes are made to the underlying infrastructure.
