2 There are two ways to access library databases from this website. If you know the database you want, on the homepage, click on the middle tab, electronic resources. Databases will be automatically selected. (If you want journals or e-books instead, choose that option.) Enter the database in the keywords. For instance, you could type MLA for MLA International Bibliography, Muse for Project Muse or OED for the Oxford English Dictionary. When you click on the database you want to use, you will then be prompted to enter your ID number and password. If you don t know the database you want, or if you want to browse the databases, you might also choose to log in before you do anything else. Start from the library homepage, and click on 登入 in the upper menu bar. (Continue to the next page.) 2

3 Log in Screen [ 登入 ]: Logging in will take you to your library record page. To get to the databases (or the catalog), click on the logo in the upper lefthand corner; this will take you back to the library homepage, but now you are logged in. 3

4 On the homepage, click on the middle tab, electronic resources. Databases will still be automatically selected. You still can search for any database using keywords: MLA for MLA International Bibliography, Muse for Project Muse or OED for the Oxford English Dictionary, etc. If you don t know which database you want, or if you think you ll want to use more than one database, click on Browse Resources by Categories. This will take you to a new page with the resources categorized by college, by topics, by type, and by frequency. It also allows you to browse all databases. 4

5 Often, you will wish to narrow down the list to databases specifically associated with English or the Humanities. You may do this in two ways: (1) You may choose the fifth tab, All Databases. This will take you to the full list, but on the left-hand side of the page, the databases are divided into categories. Click on 人文 (Humanities), and you will see 31 journals, including some that are useful for English studies but are not (at this date) listed under English, such as Early English Books Online (EEBO) [a great resource for full-text of early books], Eighteenth-Century Collections Online, and the Times Literary Supplement Centenary Archive. (2) If you want just the resources that are commonly used by English majors, under the tab, By College, click on the sixth option, 人文與社會科學學院. This will take you first to the 37 Humanities databases; you can then chose to click on those associated with the Department of English. At some point, I do recommend scrolling through all the databases in alphabetical order: some useful resources are not listed under English. For example, Academic Search Complete finds sources that are not in MLA because they are not about literature or language. (Perhaps they are on history.) Academic Search Complete, however, misses most sources that are in MLA and also finds popular sources, so use it with care. See also ERIC, if you are doing a senior project on education; Proquest Asian Business and Reference and Proquest European Business; Social Theory; Taylor and Francis Journals Online, The Economist Historical Archive; and the Wall Street Journal Asia). Note also, that, unfortunately, our library alphabetizes database titles by the first word even if the first word is the. So The Economist and The Wellesley Index are both under T instead of being under E or W. ] 5

6 If you choose the fifth tab, All Databases, you might also choose to click on one of the subheadings other than 人文 (Humanities). See if any of the topics below apply to your senior project. 7 There are some other interesting quirks to database research. For instance, if you click on the Chadwyck Healey Collections under the English Department resources, you arrive here. However, if you switch to the English site, you will see ALL of the HUSO resources. Seeing all of them could be helpful if you clicked on Chadwyck-Healey but really want to use EEBO (Early English Books Online) or another HUSO database. It s dangerous, however, if you don t uncheck the boxes of databases that you don t want to search. You will get a lot of irrelevant results if you search all the databases at once. 7

8 There is yet another way for non-chinese speakers to access the databases: You may choose to go to the old English library catalog at Search for a database that you know exists. (I searched for MLA International Bibliography.) You will be taken to another page, and the left sidebar menu will be in Chinese. Change it to English in the top right-hand corner or log in first [see the left sidebar] and then change it to English. 8

9 Once you are in this site, you can click on Humanities Databases and choose the database you want. Some users, however, have had trouble with receiving the following message when they tried to use individual databases: If this happens, you will not be able to log in from that blue button; you should go back and use the Chinese site as described above. One last note: finally, even as you do database research, don t neglect the sources in our regular library catalog. If you go back to the homepage, click on the third tab to search by category.
