Persistent Identifier the data publishing perspective Sünje Dallmeier-Tiessen, CERN 1
Agenda Data Publishing Specific Data Publishing Needs THOR Latest Examples/Solutions
Publishing Centerpiece of research outputs today Traditional pathways have not changed since centuries New models/workflows become the new norm (?) Data/Software availability Linking to data, integrating data
Research Data Publishing Research data publishing is the release of research data, associated metadata, accompanying documentation, and software code (in cases where the raw data have been processed or manipulated) for re-use and analysis in such a manner that they can be discovered on the Web and referred to in a unique and persistent way. Data publishing occurs via dedicated data repositories and/or (data) journals which ensure that the published research objects are well documented, curated, archived for the long term, interoperable, citable, quality assured and discoverable all aspects of data publishing that are important for future reuse of data by third party end-users.
RDA Group on Data Publishing Workflows Key components of data publishing DOI: /s Published endorsed by RDA Adopted by numerous publishers and data repositories
Data Publishing Elements (RDA report) DOI: /s
A data publication workflow: establishing context DOI: /s
Data Publishing needs (PID focused) Trusted reference to point to a dataset, documentation, code E.g. data availability sections Facilitate data citation Force 11 principles, DOI a known concept Accommodate versioning, umbrella records, different relationships
Force 11 Data Citation Principles 1. Importance 2. Credit and Attribution 3. Evidence 4. Unique Identification: A data citation should include a persistent method for identification that is machine actionable, globally unique, and widely used by a community 5. Access 6. Persistence: Unique identifiers, and metadata describing the data, and its disposition, should persist -- even beyond the lifespan of the data they describe 7. Specificity and Verifiability 8. Interoperability and Flexibility
Perspectives A DOI is what is written on my journal article You can give it to my data, too? - Physicist, 2013
PID for Data Slide credit to Trisha Cruse, Datacite
(Re)usable data needs contextual information - Documentation - Links to related materials - Understandable method, processing, software etc.
Slide credit to Trisha Cruse, Datacite Linking Data with Articles: Follow FAIR Data Principles From:
Slide credit to Trisha Cruse, Datacite Linking Data with Articles Subsets of Data Multiple Versions Dynamic Data Challenges Data underlying the findings described in a manuscript are not always fully available Data underlying the findings described in a manuscript made available, but hidden in supplementary information and not easily findable Data underlying the findings described in a manuscript made available, but not properly linked to/from article
Slide credit to Trisha Cruse, Datacite Bridges across data life-cycle Subsets of Data Multiple Versions Dynamic Data Linking data with data Who? When? Where? ZENODO Linking data with contributors l Linking data with articles Linking data with institutions/funders

Slide credit to Trisha Cruse, Datacite Wouldn t it be nice if Data publisher is automatically informed when journal articles cite one of their datasets

Slide credit to Trisha Cruse, Datacite In sum: working to further data sharing 1. Researchers: find, identify, and cite research data and other research objects with confidence 2. Data centers: provide persistent identifiers for datasets, workflows and best practices for data sharing and citation 3. Journal Publishers: enable research articles to be linked to the underlying data/objects 4. Funders: help to track the impact of research funding
Technical and Human infrastructure for Open Research Our goal is to ensure that every researcher, at any phase of their career, or at any institution, will have seamless access to Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) for their research artefacts and their work will be uniquely attributed to them
THOR project To establish seamless integration between articles, data, and researchers PIDs for datasets: DataCite DOIs PID s for researchers: ORCID IDs So it is possible to: grant credit to authors (through citation) support reproducible research (through citation) build new interoperable services
Technical and Human infrastructure for Open Research Our goal is to ensure that every researcher, at any phase of their career, or at any institution, will have seamless access to Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) for their research artefacts and their work will be uniquely attributed to them
Lessons learnt A lot can be done already! Lots of work that still needs to be done To create reliable, trustworthy links to research objects that make research (data) usable and give researchers credit Use standards and/or established practices whenever existing, and don t hesitate to give feedback to infrastructure/service providers Discuss with researchers what they do and don t do
One last thing Open identifiers deserve their own festival November 9-10 pidapalooza.org
