Networks and Web for Health Informatics (HINF 6220) Tutorial #1 Raheleh Makki Tutorial Class Timings Tuesday & Thursday 4:05 5:25 PM
Course Outline Database Web Programming SQL PHP HTML CSS * * Not mandatory
Introduction What is a database? A structured set of data held in a computer We create separate databases to keep data for different purposes (e.g. library database, academic database). What is relational database? A database structured based on defined relations among stored data items.
Introduction What is SQL? It Stands for Structured Query Language. It is a language to communicate with a relational database. Using SQL language you can create and manage a databases that understands SQL.
Introduction What is MySQL? It is a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) that uses SQL lets you store and retrieve that data as efficiently as possible ( including add, access, and process data) Freely available and open source
Student Table What is a Table? Data stored in database objects are called tables. A table is a collection of related data entries and it consists of columns and rows. A database usually contains one or more tables. Data elements are stored in data fields or columns. Student_ID Name Address B John 12 Main B Mary 23 West B Ann 556 Spring
Student Table What is a Table? Primary key: a key that uniquely identifies each record in a table. It can consist of a single attribute or multiple attributes in combination, or it can be generated by the DBMS. Student_ID Name Address B John 12 Main B Mary 23 West B Ann 556 Spring
Course Table Student course Table Foreign Key Tables are related to each other by relations between data fields: Foreign keys Rows in a table can be linked to rows in other tables by storing the unique key of the row to which it should be linked Student_ID Course_ID Score B A+ B B B B- Course_ID Course_Name 001 HINF CSCI CSCI 6666
Some other details about SQL SQL is NOT case sensitive. CREATE = create = Create Each SQL statement needs to be terminated (ended) by a semicolon. Some SQL commands: o SELECT - extracts data from a database o INSERT INTO - inserts new data into a database o UPDATE - updates data in a database o DELETE - deletes data from a database o CREATE DATABASE - creates a new database o ALTER DATABASE - modifies a database o CREATE TABLE - creates a new table o ALTER TABLE - modifies a table o DROP TABLE - deletes a table
How to use MySQL in the Lab?
Selecting data from a database SELECT column_name,column_name FROM table_name; SELECT * FROM table_name; SELECT * FROM table_name WHERE condition; SELECT DISTINCT column_name,column_name FROM table_name; SELECT column_name FROM table_name WHERE column_name IN (value1,value2,...);
Operators that can be used in the WHERE clause Operator Description = Equal <> Not equal > Greater than < Less than >= Greater than or equal <= Less than or equal BETWEEN LIKE IN Between an inclusive range Search for a pattern To specify multiple possible values for a column
Filtering records based on more than one condition AND Operator SELECT * FROM table_name WHERE condition1 AND condition2; OR Operator SELECT * FROM table_name WHERE condition1 OR condition2;
