2 Version Control In the beginning... there were backups and... many ways of naming backups hello.java hello1.java hello_v1.0.java hello_v java this worked okay for single users and single file project but, not good for many files or many users Is there a better way? Let's write a program to help manage our backups. What do we need? easy way to save (backup) multiple versions (restore points) a way to organize and name these versions (revisions) an easy way to return to and work from any earlier version a way to share our work with teammates Why would we want to return to an earlier version? we lose current version (system crash) we introduce a bug and wish to "start-over" from an earlier point change our mind about addition of a new feature and can't recall all that we changed wish to (experiment, refactor, add new functionality) without potentially "ruining" what already works. 3 Version Control Software A program that tracks changes to files Facilitates returning to prior versions of those files. typically also facilitates multiple users Popular options Git (one we will use in class) Mercurial Subversion (SVN) preforce Concurrent Version System (CVS) (one I first used first) Centralized version control (draw server as hub with client users connected) Examples: CVS, SVN, and preforce a single source repository "client-server" model source on the server clients: checkout, edit, checkin Distributed version control (draw directed graph w/repos as nodes and "origin" <-- "clone" arrows) Examples: Git and Mercurial each copy or clone contains entire revision history of its origin all versions are equal must pull and push changes to share with other repositories Copyright 2018 Deb Deppeler, Kuemmel CS 400 (S19): W05-3

4 Version Control Terminology version (a.ka. revision) - name (or number) for a given copy repository - files, tracking data, configurations, etc. that is being tracked checking in - put new and changed files into a repository. (git commit) checking out - get latest version of files from your repository (git checkout abdf) local repository - a repository that is on your file system remote repository - a repository on a different computer or network commit - saves and names changes as a new "version" in the repository working copy - the particular version or workspace that you are using and editing merge - add your changes to a repository modified by other users conflict - when merge fails because your changes overlap changes by another user resolution - choose which content will prevail between merge conflicts. -- mostly solved by a person not program. 5 Git working directory staging area local repository remote repository (GitHub) git commands init - create a repository for tracking the current directory clone - get a copy of an existing repository status - lists files that are in current working directory that are different from repo contents log - display list of commits config - show or set any of several git environment variables add - tell repo to track the file or changes (work directory --> staging) commit - save staged changes as a named version in repo (staging -> local repo) push - save changes committed locally to the remote "origin" (local -> remote repo) pull - get changes from origin into local repo (remote -> local working directory) Public vs Private Public - others can clone (or fork) and do their own thing from there. 7 B-Trees maintain balance in a different way -- modify node structure Properties H is O(log N) where N is number of nodes in tree (half are leaves) a general tree (n-ary not necessarily binary) inserts happen at leaf node - all leaves at the same level tends to be shorter than BST (grows upward) interior nodes have two or more children keys (data) stored at leaves Node types 2-node - draw binary node, 1 key and 2 children 3-node - draw node with 2 keys (leftmax,midmax) and 3 children 4-node - draw node with 3 keys (k1,k2,k3) and 4 children n-node - draw node with (n-1) keys and n children Copyright 2018 Deb Deppeler, Kuemmel CS 400 (S19): W05-7

12 2-3-4 Tree same as 2-3, except it allows 4-nodes too easier to implement, can "split" nodes on the way "down" Lookup Insert Delete if k <= k1, go child1 else if k < k2, go child2 else if k <= k3, go child3 else go child 4 B+ Tree Allows duplicates Uses a linked list between leaf nodes for efficiency Other Search Trees Trie tree place in tree by "prefix" or "radix", prefix determines the path to the data Example: CSL afs file system /u/d/e/deppeler Treap Balanced binary search trees (keys and priorities -- like a heap) Ordered according to key (BST lookup) uses randomized priority values to determine "rotate" or not To search for a given key value, apply binary search algorithm in a binary search tree, ignoring the priorities. To insert a new key x into the treap, generate a random priority y for x. Binary search for x in the tree, and create a new node at the leaf position where the binary search determines a node for x should exist. Then, as long as x is not the root of the tree and has a larger priority number than its parent z, perform a tree rotation that reverses the parent-child relation between x and z. To delete a node x from the treap, if x is a leaf of the tree, simply remove it. If x has a single child z, remove x from the tree and make z be the child of the parent of x (or make z the root of the tree if x had no parent). Finally, if x has two children, swap its position in the tree with the position of its immediate successor z in the sorted order, resulting in one of the previous cases. In this final case, the swap may violate the heap-ordering property for z, so additional rotations may need to be performed to restore this property.
